Though some business suites already provide technical integration of BPMSs and CEP engines, many benefits still remain undiscovered.\u0000 We describe classification of event-driven data processing having a BPMS as data source and we reveal some relevant challenges for CEP. This paper provides contributions on both technical and conceptual level. From a technical point of view, we discuss mission-critical performance issues that depend on the chosen integration approach of BPMSs, CEP engines, and database systems. Scalability of BPM applications can benefit from outsourcing BPM computations to in-DB calculations and in-CEP processing. From a functional/conceptual point of view, we emphasize current CEP techniques and how they realize functional requirements of concrete BPM use cases.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... A geospatial event is one in which an event impacts points in space over time. Examples of geospatial events include floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, and emission of toxic plumes. This paper discusses aspects of the theory of geospatial distributed event based systems (GDEBS). The paper describes algorithms for rapid detection of geospatial events which can be used on Cloud computing architectures, in which many servers collaborate to detect events by analyzing data streams from large numbers of sensors. Sensor noise and timing errors may result in false detection or missed detection as well as incorrect identification of event attributes such as the location of the event source. The paper presents mathematical analyses and simulations dealing with rapid event detection for geospatial events of varying speeds in the presence of substantial sensor noise and timing error. The paper also describes some of the algorithmic and machine-learning techniques for improving event detection in the Cloud with large numbers of noisy sensors. Experience with GDEBS using a seismic network is described.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... International Workshop on Distributed Event-Based Systems. At the same time, these inherently desirable properties render a DEB system more difficult to understand and evolve since, in the absence of explicit dependency information, an engineer has to assume that any component in the system may potentially interact with, and thus depend on, any other component. Software analysis techniques that have been used successfully in traditional, explicit invocation-based systems are of little use in this domain. In order to aid the understandability of, and assess the impact of changes in, DEB systems, we propose Helios, a technique that combines component-level (1) control-flow and (2) state-based dependency analysis with system-level (3) structural analysis to produce a complete and accurate message dependence graph for a system. We have applied Helios to applications constructed on top of four different message-oriented middleware platforms. We summarize the results of several such applications. We demonstrate that Helios enables effective impact analysis and quantify its improvements over existing alternatives.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Huge amounts of domain background knowledge stored in external knowledge bases can be used in combination with event processing in order to achieve more knowledgeable complex event processing. In this paper, we discuss the benefits of background knowledge for event processing and describe different categories of event query rules. We propose different event processing approaches used for the fusion of background knowledge with real-time event streams, like plan-based event processing or event query preprocessing. We have implemented some of the proposed event processing methods for the stock market monitoring domain by using available real-time stock events and background knowledge about joint-stock companies from the linked open data. Our experiments show that some of the approaches can improve the performance of event processing compared to more basic approaches.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Such applications are often deployed over multiple administrative domains, some of which may not be trusted. Recent attacks in public clouds indicate that a major concern in untrusted domains is the enforcement of privacy. By routing data based on subscriptions evaluated on the content of publications, publish/subscribe systems can expose critical information to unauthorized parties. Information leakage can be avoided by the means of privacy-preserving filtering, which is supported by several mechanisms for encrypted matching. Unfortunately, all existing approaches have in common a high performance overhead and the difficulty to use classical optimization for content-based filtering such as per-attribute containment. In this paper, we propose a novel mechanism that greatly reduces the cost of supporting privacy-preserving filtering based on encrypted matching operators. It is based on a pre-filtering stage that can be combined with containment graphs, if available. Our experiments indicate that pre-filtering is able to significantly reduce the number of encrypted matching for a variety of workloads, and therefore the costs associated with the cryptographic mechanisms. Furthermore, our analysis shows that the additional data structures used for pre-filtering have very limited impact on the effectiveness of privacy preservation.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ...
