As solutions for the problem, we compare three different approaches. The first one is a custom solution using optimal technologies, such as lock-free queue and minimum heap-list. The second one is a rule-based solution using JBoss Drools Expert. The third one is a CEP-enhanced rule-based solution using JBoss Drools Fusion. After evaluating the event processing performance among these three implementation methods in terms of throughput and latency, we finally conclude this paper with the discussion of implications of our solution methods including non-performance factors.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... This requires a continuous communication that wastes energy at the sensor nodes and greatly reduces the overall network lifetime. We propose a semantic-based in-network data processing that reduces energy consumption and improves the scalability of heterogeneous sensor networks. Ontology fragments in each sensor node help identify the data routed through the sensor network. We have adapted a matching algorithm to process a changing knowledge base. Simulation results show that the networks' energy consumption is considerably reduced.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Big data is characterized by volume, velocity, variety and veracity (\"data in doubt\"). As big data applications, many of the emerging event processing applications must process events that arrive from sources such as sensors and social media, which have inherent uncertainties associated with them. Consider, for example, the possibility of incomplete data streams and streams including inaccurate data. In this tutorial we classify the different types of uncertainty found in event processing applications and discuss the implications on event representation and reasoning. An area of research in which uncertainty has been studied is Artificial Intelligence. We discuss, therefore, the main Artificial Intelligence-based event processing systems that support probabilistic reasoning. The presented approaches are illustrated using an example concerning crime detection.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Prominent systems expect a large user base with rather diversified demands. Yet it is highly challenging to achieve scalability without sacrificing the expressiveness of queries in such systems. This paper proposes distributed spectral cluster management, an approach which adapts the techniques from spectral graph theory to work in distributed settings. The proposed approach is applied to content-based publish/subscribe to i) significantly reduce the cost for event dissemination by clustering subscribers exploiting the similarity of events, ii) preserve the expressiveness of the subscription language, and iii) perform robustly in the presence of workload variations. The evaluations analyze the accuracy of the proposed distributed spectral mechanisms and show their effectiveness to significantly reduce the efforts to disseminate events under many practical workloads.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... Sensor database systems typically support event-driven queries to be executed when some events are detected at some sensor nodes. In this paper, we propose a location-aware, event-driven query processing scheme using an in-network query processing algorithm as an extension to our previous work on Sensor Network Query Language (SNQL). The proposed scheme provides a couple of location-aware expressions for selective dissemination and in-network propagation of a query. We also propose a spatial metadata management scheme by using Quadtree. Our evaluation shows that energy consumption of our event-driven query processing is reduced by 45% and response time is faster by up to 50% compared to the existing systems.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... In cases where a bottleneck operator is stateless, it is obvious that parallelization by splitting the incoming stream among multiple parallel operators deployed on different nodes can help improve performance. However, it is not so obvious when the bottleneck operator is stateful. In such a case, parallelization is much more challenging as it often requires a state sharing mechanism for the parallel operators. Moreover, it incurs additional overheads of required accesses by the parallel operators to shared state and synchronization constructs. In this paper, we propose a parallelization framework for stateful stream processing operators. The framework not only addresses issues related to the system model and support for operator parallelization, but also delves into the theoretical details that model the suitability of parallelization and the optimal degree of parallelism. We have implemented and evaluated our framework in the context of IBM's System S distributed stream processing middleware. While microbenchmarks are used to validate the proposed theoretical model, a parallelized implementation of a moving KNN application is used for the purpose of evaluation.","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ... At the same time, these applications are also mission-critical with serious quality of service requirements such as real-time performance, continuous availability, high security and privacy. Bohli et al. state in one of their theses: The value of the IoT market grows more than linearly with the number of consumers. This thesis inherently assumes the value of 'connectedness' of the network [1]. One supporting experience with 'connectedness' that follows such thesis in a favourable way is with social networks, e. g. facebook, twitter etc [2]. Scharmen argues similarly from more abstract view that spaces, physical, virtual or physical-virtual are just culture containers, for people to present, curate, mediate via these interconnections [5].","PeriodicalId":92123,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the ...
