It relies on programming primitives to express dependencies between data items and on runtime/middleware support for automated propagation of changes. Despite this paradigm is receiving increasing attention, defining the precise semantics and the consistency guarantees for reactive programming in distributed environments is an open research problem.\u0000 This paper targets such problem by studying the consistency guarantees for the propagation of changes in a distributed reactive system. In particular, it introduces three propagation semantics, namely causal, glitch free, and atomic, providing different trade-offs between costs and guarantees. Furthermore, it describes how these semantics are concretely implemented in a Distributed REActice Middleware (DREAM), which exploits a distributed event-based dispatching system to propagate changes.\u0000 We compare the performance of DREAM in a wide range of scenarios. This allows us to study the overhead introduced by the different semantics in terms of network traffic and propagation delay and to assess the efficiency of DREAM in supporting distributed reactive systems.
Proceedings of the ... We will provide an overview about the system architecture of Stream-Mine3G and implementation details of an application aimed at consumption prediction and outlier detection. Using our elastic approach, we can provide an accurate prediction as we can keep a practically unbounded history able to deal with high volume, highly fluctuating workloads. Our system also provides techniques for dealing with incomplete data in the source stream, which is a common problem when processing data from a large number of sources. Finally, we provide performance measurements showing that we are able to process the dataset given as part of the 2014 DEBS Challenge (135 GB) at a throughput of up to 40 kEvents/s.
Proceedings of the ... A cost model for complex event operators 复杂事件操作符的成本模型

One way of dealing with high resource costs is to distribute the work of a Complex event detector. Distribution must happen along the axes of different operators making up a complex query. This in turn needs a good understanding of the "cost" of a operator. In this paper we present an analytical cost model of complex event operators, that can serve as building block for distribution and placement of queries in distributed complex event processing. The cost model estimates CPU and memory requirements using input event-rates and query parameters like predicate selectivity and window-size. We have verified the accuracy of this cost-model using a Java based implementation of a CEP detector and with real world event streams (but scrubbed for specific predicate selectivities) and show that the prediction is accurate to within 5% of measured values.
Proceedings of the ... In this industry, this concept is widespread, and among the barrier-based risk management methods, the bow-tie method has been reported as one of the most widely used. However, the way the concept of barrier has been applied has not proven fully effective to prevent the occurrence of accidents, which keep happening and causing the loss of human lives, damages to the environment and both financial and image losses to the corporations involved. Some risk management experts from this industry have been supporting the idea that, in order to effectively manage operational risks and reduce the occurrence of accidents, just assessing risks and establishing preventive and mitigating barriers to control them is not enough, and continuous monitoring of the states of these barriers is required, but no concrete solution is proposed. This paper is based on a research developed within the context of a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) division of an E&P operations unit of a major Brazilian energy company that aimed to add this ability to traditional bow-tie diagrams by using an event processing system that provides the automatic updating of the barriers' states. The system's architecture was built according to the Event Processing Technical Society (EPTS) Reference Architecture as presented by the Reference Architecture Working Group (RAWG) at the 6th ACM International Conference on Distributed Event-Based Systems (DEBS) in 2012. A prototype system was implemented and applied to a fictitious business scenario, allowing to analyze the adequacy of the event processing technique to the continuous monitoring of the states of the barriers of bow-tie diagrams.
Proceedings of the ... Effective data communication between publishers and subscribers requires dynamic and reliable discovery of publisher/-subscriber endpoints in the system, which DDS currently supports via a standardized approach called the Simple Discovery Protocol (SDP). For large-scale systems, however, SDP scales poorly since the discovery completion time grows as the number of applications and endpoints increases. To scale to much larger systems, a more efficient discovery protocol is required.\u0000 This paper makes three contributions to overcoming the current limitations with DDS SDP. First, it describes the Content-based Filtering Discovery Protocol (CFDP), which is our new endpoint discovery mechanism that employs content-based filtering to conserve computing, memory and network resources used in the DDS discovery process. Second, it describes the design of a CFDP prototype implemented in a popular DDS implementation. Third, it analyzes the results of empirical studies conducted in a testbed we developed to evaluate the performance and resource usage of our CFDP approach compared with SDP.
Proceedings of the ... Complex attacks are usually planned by attackers by carefully analyzing the victim to identify those systems that, if successfully targeted, could provide the most effective result. In this paper we show that some pub/sub middleware are inherently vulnerable to a specific kind of preparatory attack, namely the Overlay Scan Attack, that a malicious user could exploit to infer the internal topology of a system, a sensible information that could be used to plan future attacks. The topology inference is performed by only using the standard primitives provided by the pub/sub middleware and assuming minimal knowledge on the target system. The practicality of this attack has been shown both in a simulated environment and through a test performed on a SIENA pub/sub deployment.
Proceedings of the ... To fully realise the potential of emerging distributed systems, it must be possible to manage and bring together (coordinate) system components in various ways---perhaps for purposes and in circumstances not contemplated by their designers. Therefore, we believe that the application logic embodied in components should be separated from the policy that specifies where, how and for what purpose they should be used.\u0000 This paper explores how supporting infrastructure can enable policy, representing high-level (user) or systems concerns, to drive system functionality. SBUS is a middleware that supports secure, dynamic reconfiguration, providing the means for policy enforcement across system components. We present SBUS to demonstrate the practical aspects and design considerations in a) making infrastructure policy-compliant, and b) leveraging the dynamic policy enforcement capabilities to achieve particular functional goals.
Proceedings of the ... The goal of consuming energy generated locally instead of transmitting it over large distances calls for systems that can process millions of events being generated from smart plugs and power generation sources in near real time. The heart of these systems often is a module that can process dense power consumption event streams and predict the consumption patterns at specific occupational units such as a house or a building. It is also often useful to identify outliers that are consuming power significantly higher than other similar devices in the occupational unit (such as a block or a neighbourhood). In this paper, we present a system that can process over a million events per second from smart plugs and correlate the information to output both accurate predictions as well as identify outliers. Our system is built from the ground up in C++ achieving very high throughput with very low CPU capacity for processing events. Our results show that the throughput of our system is over a million events per second while using under 20% of one core.
Proceedings of the ...
