This work is focused on the third ingredient i.e. Timely prediction. Timely prediction is required for proper functioning of smart grid. Towards this we offer a scalable, distributed and incremental solution.\u0000 We present a solution that utilise multiple techniques to evade performance degradation maintaining timing requirements. These techniques include:(1) Splitting the nested processing into stages to maintain high throughput. (2) Customised median finding algorithms to generate timely output from high volume data. (3) Pre-fetching to eliminate disk access time for accessing the historical data. Implementing these together, our technique is able to perform 11K predictions per sec, and 2.5K outlier computations per sec.
Proceedings of the ... In CEP, the processing takes place according to user-defined rules, which specify the (causal) relations between the observed events and the phenomena to be detected. We claim that the complexity of writing such rules is a limiting factor for the diffusion of CEP. In this paper, we tackle this problem by introducing iCEP, a novel framework that learns, from historical traces, the hidden causality between the received events and the situations to detect, and uses them to automatically generate CEP rules. The paper introduces three main contributions. It provides a precise definition for the problem of automated CEP rules generation. It dicusses a general approach to this research challenge that builds on three fundamental pillars: decomposition into subproblems, modularity of solutions, and ad-hoc learning algorithms. It provides a concrete implementation of this approach, the iCEP framework, and evaluates its precision in a broad range of situations, using both synthetic benchmarks and real traces from a traffic monitoring scenario.
Proceedings of the ... In this paper we investigate users' social activities and interactions developed in "human-centered participatory sensing" groups and perform an analysis to understand human crowd behavior. We exploit two popular real and heterogeneous datasets for our analysis: an event based social network (Meetup) dataset and a checkin-based geosocial network (Foursquare) dataset, to understand user attendance in social community events and provide insights into the factors that influence users to attend events.
Proceedings of the ... Maintaining mobile CEP systems is highly resource intensive since in many cases events need to be detected in a consumer-centric manner to ensure low latency event detection and high quality of results. In this paper we propose the RECEP system to increase the scalability of mobile CEP systems. In the presence of mobile users with partially overlapping interest, the RECEP system offers methods to efficiently reuse computations and this way reduces the resource requirements of mobile CEP. Since reuse of computations happens with respect to well defined quality metrics, RECEP can be easily tailored to specific mobile applications and maximize the resource savings for their desired quality in terms of precision and recall of the processed events from the user's environment.
Proceedings of the ... While the pub/sub communication paradigm provides an effective solution for the sought semantic diversity of event filtering, the event processing capabilities of existing pub/sub systems are restricted to singular event matching without support for stream aggregation, which so far can be accommodated only at the subscriber edge brokers.\u0000 In this paper, we propose the first systematic solution for supporting distributed aggregation over a range of time-based aggregation window semantics in a content-based pub/sub system. In order to eschew the need to disseminate a large number of publications to subscribers, we strive to distribute the aggregation computation within the pub/sub overlay network. By enriching the pub/sub language with aggregation semantics, we allow pub/sub brokers to aggregate incoming publications and forward only results to the next broker downstream. We show that our baseline solutions, one which aggregates early (at the publisher edge) and another which aggregates late (at the subscriber edge), are not optimal strategies for minimizing bandwidth consumption. We then propose an adaptive rate-based heuristic solution which determines which brokers should aggregate publications. Using real datasets extracted from our traffic monitoring use case, we show that this adaptive solution leads to improved performance compared to that of our baseline solutions.
Proceedings of the ... The approach shows how to architecture a non-threaded workflow engine by eliminating threading through event-oriented paradigm without degrading performance. The architecture is presented formally in terms of just a handful of expressions in CCS, the Calculus of Communicating Systems. The CCS based light-weight model of the distributed engine is built keeping in mind the separation of the outer layer of events with implementation, extensibility, and also the issue of traceability into implementation. The engine with all its components has been implemented over TAO realization of CORBA utilizing its event service component. Performance results of the implementation are also provided including a comparison to a popular open-source workflow system.
Proceedings of the ... This is especially important for the so-called data-intensive applications, which deal with huge amount of mobile data, like in the case of m-Health (i.e. wearable sensing). Many of these applications are oriented towards detecting of particular real-time situations, which brings them to the domain of Event Processing. However, we argue that real-time, big data driven applications require a novel infrastructure for distributed complex event processing that is only partially executed on the mobile devices. This tutorial paper presents a foundation for an efficient development of such mobile applications, by introducing a mobile-driven distributed CEP infrastructure. We present the technical details of the infrastructure and its initial implementation.
Proceedings of the ... Performing such an analysis in real-time opens up new business opportunities as well as increases revenues as recommendations can be generated on the fly making a previously unknown product to the potential customer attractive.\u0000 As click streams are highly fluctuating as well as must be processed in real time, there is a high demand for Event-Stream-Processing (ESP) engines that are (1) horizontally as well as vertically scalable, (2) elastic in order to cope with the fluctuation in the data stream, and (3) provide efficient state management mechanisms in order to drive such kind of analysis. However, the majority of the nowadays ESP engines such as Apache S4 or Storm provide neither explicit state management nor techniques for elastic scaling.\u0000 In this paper, we present StreamMine3G, a scalable and elastic ESP engine which provides state management out of the box, scales with the number of nodes as well as cores and improves performance due to a novel delegation mechanisms lowering contention on state as well as network links caused by fluctuations and temporary imbalances in the data streams.
Proceedings of the ...
