The Question Review Model (QRM) structures study review for each user by prioritizing a list of critical concepts from which conceptually related questions are chosen based on their difficulty level. The model serves to identify a student's conceptual strengths and weaknesses to provide comprehensive feedback about student in-class performance and recommend the order of questions best suitable for practice. For each concept, a binary question tree is formed that enables, either the user or the system, to structure the review session with a trade-off between question difficulty and the number of questions necessary for conceptual mastery.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"12 1","pages":"77-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73335552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method is based on the variational mode decomposition (VMD) and the Hilbert transform. The VMD is applied in iterative way with specific input parameters in order to determine the fundamental frequency component from the speech signals. The fundamental frequency component has been used for detection of voiced and non-voiced regions from speech signals. The instantaneous pitch frequency is computed using Hilbert transform of the fundamental frequency component corresponding to voiced regions of speech signals. The experimental results are shown on speech signals taken from Keele pitch extraction reference database. The experimental results obtained from the proposed method are compared with the other existing methods for determining pitch frequency from speech signals.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"9 1","pages":"325-330"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72804458","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach consists of an ML detector employing compressed likelihoods, followed by one of two processing stages which filter out unreasonable detections: either a target tracking approach or a Viterbi algorithm. Results show very good ability to extract the fundamental, even in very noisy data.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"59 1","pages":"347-352"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76203468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ability to perform simple, yet effective, real-time DSP, is now easily achieved with Arduino and the Analog Shield. The ADC and DAC of the shield allow aliasing and reconstruction issues to be fully explored. Most other audio DSP platforms employ sigma-delta converters, which integrate the ADC anti-aliasing and DAC reconstruction filters into the silicon, hence there is no way to probe the raw signals. We further advocate portable PC-based instrumentation, such as the Analog™Discovery. Programming the Arduino platform is easier than more sophisticated platforms, hence students can focus on key educational issues involving embedded systems, sampling theory, FIR filtering, upsampling and down sampling, and a taste of undersampling sampling as found in software defined radio. Sample investigations show how effective this platform is at revealing DSP math in action.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"98 1","pages":"59-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80545209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To that end, we propose a border crossing localization system that uses the changes in measured received signal strength (RSS) on links between transceivers deployed linearly along the border. Any single link has a low signal-to-noise ratio because its RSS also varies due to environmental change, (e.g., branches swaying in wind), and sometimes does not change significantly when a person crosses it. The redundant, overlapping nature of the links between many possible pairs of nodes in the network provides an opportunity to mitigate errors. We propose new classifiers to use the redundancy to estimate where a person crosses the border. Specifically, the solution of these classifiers indicates which pair of neighboring nodes the person crosses between. We demonstrate that in many cases, these classifiers provide more robust border crossing localization compared to a classifier that excludes these noisy, redundant measurements.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"90 1","pages":"249-254"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85919587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advantage of artificial neural network is its ability of learning or training in other words. By learning, the network can give appropriate output when accepting input. Thus, artificial neural network is a good model for predicting transportation flow. This paper proposes the Bayesian normalized Elman neural network as the prediction model which has the reliability and stability of Elman neural network and is able to overcome the influence of the hidden layer nodes on the prediction accuracy, which improves the generalization ability of the network. Then depending on long-time traffic forecasting results of different neural networks like classical BP, wavelet neural network, statistics accuracy error and comparative analysis are finished to draw a conclusion that combined with Bayesian normalized method based on Elman neural network is more suitable for long time traffic forecast.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"9 1","pages":"426-430"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88588460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The major features of the palmprints are palm lines, wrinkles and ridges, and many approaches use them in different ways towards solving the palmprint recognition problem. Here we have proposed to use a set of statistical and wavelet-based features; statistical to capture the general characteristics of palmprints; and wavelet-based to find those information not evident in the spatial domain. Also we use two different classification approaches, minimum distance classifier scheme and weighted majority voting algorithm, to perform palmprint matching. The proposed method is tested on a well-known palmprint dataset of 6000 samples and has shown an impressive accuracy rate of 99.65%-100% for most scenarios.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"20 1","pages":"31-36"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74679393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simple and easy to compute, ALCR information alone was successfully used in an automatic speech segmentation system for English. However, ALCR has never been applied to Thai. As a result, the objective of the study is to apply ALCR information to ascertain its usefulness in detecting significant temporal changes in continuous Thai Speech. An experiment was conducted on a small speech corpus containing 21 sentences. Preliminary results suggest that ALCR and RMS energy can be used to detect the phonetic boundary between obstruent initial consonant and preceding/following vowel. In addition, it can also be used to detect boundary between final consonant of the preceding syllable and initial consonant of the following syllable except for the case involving two successive non-identical nasals. The overall accuracy is around 81% for data from four speakers.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"104 1","pages":"415-420"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80869504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the methods uses a serial schedule and the remaining three techniques use non-serial message schedules. The serial schedule is shown to give good estimates in less number of iterations compared to the non-serial message schedules. The results also show that fast graphical estimators can be designed by using non-serial message schedules with damping to approach the bit error rates of the serial schedule while reducing the computational time for convergence. In particular, the damped flooding message schedule using four iterations reduces the computational time for convergence by more than 30 % compared to the serial message schedule using one iteration for signal to noise ratios lower than 20 dB.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"53 1","pages":"146-150"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89269008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In merging the non-redundant information from shifted, rotated, blurred, noise-corrupted, low-resolution observations of the same scene, the approach registers the frame and reduces the impact of the distortions. The method is a generalization of a recently published blind inpainting algorithm to the multi-frame super-resolution case including both Gaussian and Impulse noises. Most multi-frame super-resolution algorithms, only consider blurring and Gaussian noise, ignoring noises that arise in real applications such as when processing time-of-flight camera depth images. Examples on simulated scenarios and real images produce results that compare favorably with other methods and clearly justify the benefits of this imaging model and the reconstruction method presented.","PeriodicalId":91992,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE Signal Processing and Signal Processing Education Workshop (SP/SPE)","volume":"46 1","pages":"208-213"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84299089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
