In this study, research utilization is defined as the process of acquisition, critical reading, and implementation of research knowledge. The aim of the study was to analyze the research utilization competence of postgraduate nursing students at the beginning and end of master's degree studies in Finland. Data were collected online from two groups of students ( n = 33 and n = 60) with the structured Competence in Research Utilization-2 instrument and analyzed statistically. The study was reported using the STROBE guidelines. The students’ attitudes towards research utilization were positive. Students’ knowledge of research utilization was excellent and their skills were good at the end of their studies; they were higher than at the beginningof their studies. The study suggests that theoretically oriented nursing science education, including studies on conducting research, strengthens the research utilization competence needed for evidence-based practice.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"1 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140515892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, altered attitudes to performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation among first responders were reported. The aim of this study was to explore ambulance personnel's experiences of, and lessons learned from, out-of-hospital cardiac arrest missions during the COVID-19 pandemic, in a Swedish context. Nine Swedish ambulance personnel were interviewed, and the data were analysed using thematic content analysis. The analysis illuminated professional, personal and relational consequences as well as lessons learned reported by the informants. The COREQ guideline was used to report the important aspects of the study. The ambulance personnel experienced several challenges, mainly due to the personal protective equipment. To enhance patient safety, they strived to remain resilient despite the challenges. The informants also expressed positive aspects of their experiences, such as having acquired increased competence through working under these circumstances. To strive for resilience and competence became the overarching theme. The experiences and the lessons learned described in the study, could contribute to helping ambulance organisations initiate new routines and/or improve existing ones, as well as developing a protective equipment that does not obstruct any aspect of an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest mission.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"4 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140519484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of the study was to describe changes in the anxiety levels of nurses from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to a time point 18 months later, and to describe how the working conditions, interactions between workers, psychological distress, and managers’ actions were associated with the anxiety of nursing staff. The repeated cross-sectional survey was distributed to nurses at two Finnish hospitals. The mean anxiety scores of nurses increased over the examined 18-month period, but still indicated mild anxiety at both time points. Working conditions, interactions between workers, and psychological distress were associated with anxiety. At both measurement points, the nurses who did not receive support from their manager had higher levels of anxiety compared to those who received support. Hospital organizations can take advantage of the results when preparing for new pandemics and producing concrete plans to support nurses’ mental health and coping at work.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"10 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140527316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Lived time is, however, sparsely studied among nurses when it comes to caring for people with dementia. This also seems to be the case with nursing students. We are not aware of any studies on the topic that have been conducted with nursing students. Thus, the aim of the present study was to answer the research question of what lived time is about when nursing students are caring for older persons with dementia in a nursing home. A phenomenological design inspired by van Manen's hermeneutical phenomenological approach was employed to analyse 11 interviews with seven nursing students. The study was reported in accordance with the COREQ checklist. Three themes were obtained: ‘the meaning of the older person's past in the present’, ‘moments of connectedness’ and ‘living in different temporalities – when time dimensions collide’. This study has practical implications for the care of older individuals with dementia. The findings suggest seeing older people with dementia living their time in the past and the present. The future, however, requires more attention in nursing. The meaning of the various moments illuminating lived time between the students and the older individuals with dementia is further discussed.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"13 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140524077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This discussion paper focuses on international collaboration of ESRs in nursing science. The aim of this paper was to clarify the optimal collaboration forms and identify challenges and recommendations for supporting individual researchers and organisations to strengthen international collaboration for the ESR phase. The paper is based on previous literature and authors’ experiences in the collaboration between two countries by the Baltic Sea, Estonia and Finland. In future, more discussion is needed on how to establish international partnerships and collaboration in researcher career building globally: expanded and long-term collaboration is needed to develop nursing science but also to improve nursing care, patient outcomes and, finally, to benefit society.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"275 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140521028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

NCMs collaborate with a wide range of professionals across social and healthcare services. This study explored social and healthcare workers’ perspectives on collaborating with hospital-based NCMs. A total of 16 social and healthcare workers were interviewed. A thematic analysis led to three themes that describe the NCMs as follows: 1) being crucial allies who gather the threads; 2) breaking free of standardised care to create flexible support solutions; and 3) making a difference to individuals who are in vulnerable positions. Highly effective and specialised societal systems have created a need for services such as the NCMs, who will act as crucial allies to both collaboration partners and patients. Based on the accounts of our participants, NCMs contributed with something more to the cross-sectorial collaboration, than what they had experienced in previous collaborative partnerships. This study underlines the need for structural changes if we are to address the sustained issues of health inequalities.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140524660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, nurse managers are committed to their work, but the COVID-19 pandemic increased their intentions to leave. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationships between psychological safety, social support, and commitment among nurse managers. The data were collected in 2023 through a web-based survey from Finnish social and healthcare workers’ trade union members. Of the 4573 participants, this study further focused on 366 nurse managers and are reported in accordance with the STROBE checklist. Findings revealed that nurse managers’ perceived psychological safety was higher than among other workers. Nurse managers in public healthcare perceived lower psychological safety than managers in private and third sectors. A mediation model showed that social support partly mediated the positive effect of psychological safety on commitment. A psychologically safe environment enables more social support, thus enhancing the commitment. Dedicated nurse managers play a crucial role as a fundamental asset within the healthcare system.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"156 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140523256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given its global impact, understanding the unique characteristics of individual countries is important for identifying and comprehending the successful components of nursing research infrastructures. The aim of the present study was to analyze nursing research articles indexed as Swedish in the Web of Science Core Collection from the database's inception to the time of data collection. A search string was developed and employed to find relevant publications. Original research and review articles, indexed as Swedish and written in English, were included. Using a bibliometric and content analytical approach, evaluations of both research publications and their corresponding topics were conducted. A total of 7213 articles were included. The most prolific authors were part of extensive networks, as were the most productive higher educational institutes. International co-authorship made up 32% of all publications. The findings reveal comparably high productivity among Swedish nursing researchers, likely attributed to international collaborations as well as collaborations between universities and university hospitals. The research spanned diverse clinical and nursing-specific areas. The most cited articles focused on methodological or conceptual aspects. Current research topic trends encompass health literacy and telehealth/digital health.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"14 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140522015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is important to use a pedagogical model that provides the best conditions for nursing students to develop clinical competence. The aim of this study was to describe and interpret nurse preceptors’ experiences of a newly implemented pedagogical model, peer learning, in municipal elderly care home settings. Nine registered nurses from elderly care homes with precepting experience participated. Data were collected through individual interviews, and a thematic content analysis was performed. The study followed the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. The findings revealed four sub-themes: ‘requiring careful preparation’; ‘contributing control and trust in the learning process’; ‘changing perspectives brings new opportunities and challenges’; and ‘enabling students to believe in themselves’, all interpreted into the main theme of ‘demanding yet supportive and developing’. In conclusion, municipal elderly care homes seemed to be a learning environment well suited for using the peer learning pedagogical model.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"5 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140519187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous knowledge about nurse managers’ early interventions in nurses’ professional conduct is scarce. The aim of this study was to describe how nurse managers intervene in registered nurses’ professional conduct, based on the documents of early intervention and support. A retrospective, cross-sectional document analysis with inductive content analysis was conducted on 43 documents of an early intervention and support program for registered nurses in one Finnish hospital between 2019 and 2021. The manuscript and reporting of the findings were guided by the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research checklist. The concerns about nurses’ work-related well-being and their working initiated the early intervention process. Nurse managers’ early interventions included supportive and strength-based approaches. These involved appreciating the nurses’ own awareness of their ability to work and supported the process, as did a collaboration with occupation health and other support services. More knowledge is needed about the influence of early intervention programs and nurses' and managers' awareness of different methods.","PeriodicalId":91777,"journal":{"name":"Nordic journal of nursing research","volume":"60 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140525179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
