Also, there is \u0000 scanty information about the clinical characteristics of males with Graves’ disease. The objectives of the study were to \u0000 determine the frequency of males with Graves’ disease seen by the Endocrinology unit of a tertiary hospital and \u0000 describe their clinical characteristics. \u0000Materials and methods: Clinical data was retrieved from the case records of patients with thyroid disease seen \u0000 between January, 2016 and January, 2018 and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. \u0000Results: 61 patients with Graves’ disease were seen out of which 6 cases were males giving a frequency of 10.9%. The \u0000 male-to-female ratio was 1: 9. The mean age at diagnosis of the male cases was 45 ± 16 years. All the patients had \u0000 goitre and weight loss. 50% had heat intolerance, excessive sweating, palpitation, hyperdefaecation and hand tremors. \u0000 Thyroid eye disease and thyrotoxic heart disease were found in 50% of the cases respectively. There was no statistically \u0000 significant difference in the initialfree thyroxine between males and females (p=0.18). There was no statistically \u0000 significant association between initial free thyroxine and thyroid eye disease (p=0.39). \u0000Conclusion: Graves’ disease is 9 times commoner in females compared to males in our centre. The clinical features \u0000 in males are similar to reported features in females except thyroid eye disease which appears commoner in males.

They mostly appear without any metastasis because most cases are discovered incidentally. According to recent guidelines, papillary microcarcinoma can be safely followed over ten years, and only a small percentage will show significant growth or metastasis. Approximately one third of adults have papillary microcarcinomas in their thyroid, but most will never progress into metastatic cancer. Here, we describe a male adult treated for cervical metastasis of papillary cancer in the thyroid gland. The patient underwent total thyroidectomy, central neck dissection, and lateral neck dissection. A meticulous histological examination showed papillary thyroid cancer metastasis in the central compartment as well as in region 4 in the lateral compartment. There was no sign of primary papillary cancer in the thyroid gland. Only a few cases have been found in the literature when cervical metastasis of papillary cancer appears without any detectable primary focus in the thyroid gland.

Methods: Data was collected from the Taiwan National Health Insurance system and included patients newly diagnosed with TED from 2000 to 2012. The endpoint of interest was a diagnosis of uveitis. Results: 444 patients with TED yielding1,776 matched comparisons revealed that patients with TED were found to have no significantly higher risk for developing uveitis. When comparison of TED and non-TED group was stratified by gender, and age, the association of TED and uveitis was also not significant. Conclusion: TED is characterized as an extraocular inflammatory disease and uveitis is an intraocular inflammation. In the largest study of TED in uveitis to date, our findings indicate that TED are not associated with (the risk for) uveitis. Different autoimmune mechanisms could explain the unique condition. The present data warrant further exploration that different auto antibodies may be involved in the immunopathology of TED and uveitis.

Methods: We divided 47 patients who underwent radioactive iodine therapy into two groups based on thyroid stimulating antibody levels three months post-therapy, as follows: the D(3M) group with increasing levels and the I(3M) group with decreasing levels of the antibody. We compared the clinical characteristics of the two groups. In addition, the 47 patients were again divided into the following two groups, and their clinical characteristics were compared: the D(6M) and I(6M) groups, which consisted of patients with decreasing and increasing thyroid stimulating antibody levels, respectively, three to six months after radioactive iodine therapy. Results: A significantly higher dose of Iodine-131(I-131) per gram of estimated thyroid weight was observed in the D(3M) group than in the I(3M) group, suggesting that the removal of intrathyroidal immune cells by β-rays may influence changes in thyroid stimulating antibody levels. The D(6M) group had significantly higher goiter shrinkage rates than did the I(6M) group, at three, six, and 12 months post-radioactive iodine therapy. Since the goiter shrinkage rate is equivalent to the decreasing rate of thyroid antigen levels, we speculate that the reduction in thyroid antigen led to a decrease in thyrotropin receptor antibody production mediated by peripheral blood immune cells. Conclusions: Our study suggests that, in the short-term, thyroid stimulating antibody levels after radioactive iodine therapy were significantly associated with the receipt of radioactive iodine therapy, probably due to the reduction in the number of intrathyroidal immune cells, and, in the long-term, they were influenced by the immune response of peripheral blood cells associated with the reduction in thyroid antigen by I-131. Therefore, high-dosage I-131 therapy is recommended for Graves’ patients who do not desire total thyroidectomy and are planning to become pregnant, or those with a risk of ophthalmopathy.
