This significantly hinders their ability to open up and talk about the traumatic experience. Such situations will make difficult the trauma-healing efforts carried out by counselors. The study aims to identify the competencies counselors must acquire for the counseling process to function smoothly and successfully. Data were collected through detailed interviews and observations involving 14 informants. Researchers also conducted literature reviews and administrative tasks to support their findings. Case studies were conducted to explore the role and significance of communication skills for counselors in the trauma recovery process for child victims of sexual assault. The findings revealed that counselors must not only have psychological knowledge or counseling competencies but also possess a variety of characteristics such as personality competence, professional competence, social competence, and, most importantly, communication competence.","PeriodicalId":91409,"journal":{"name":"Studies in media and communication","volume":"17 21","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141927398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Education holds a crucial role in human capital development of nation to respond structural transformation challenges, global industrial revolution, and disruptive changes in many dimensions of human life. Indonesian education quality still needs to be improved, since the Indonesia 2018 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) rank in lower quartile compare with other 78 countries. Nadiem Makariem, the Education, Culture, Research and Technology minister, convey the discourse about Independent Learning through Endgame podcast series 113, hosted by Gita Wirjawan, an Indonesian investment banker, entrepreneur, philanthropist, and former Indonesian minister of trade. This study aims to analyse the podcast uses Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive approach to demystify ideology behind the policy through critical analysis of language, cognition, and social-cultural context, from macro (context) to micro (social cognition, ideology) level. While there is growing scholarly interest in exploring novel ways of countering mis- and disinformation, research examining specific initiatives remains scarce. This article provides in-depth qualitative case studies of two successful collaborative civil society initiatives in the digital agora that used digital media to counter disinformation: (1) Comprova during Brazil’s presidential election and (2) the Transparent Referendum Initiative in Ireland’s 8th Amendment Referendum. As these cases demonstrate, fact-checking and debunking initiatives benefited from crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing allowed these initiatives to counter disinformation while simultaneously building more knowledgeable, engaged, and empowered communities.","PeriodicalId":91409,"journal":{"name":"Studies in media and communication","volume":"26 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141802938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To alleviate stress, they play TikTok, a social media platform widely used to upload videos of conversations between care workers and the elderly. From the videos, this study scrutinized how language was used between care workers and the elderly in communicating. This research explored video displays on TikTok based on the use of language in conversation services between care workers and elders based on culturally based concepts around the usage of Japanese honorifics in constructing social identities. The data were obtained from 35 TikTok accounts used through an online survey. The data, in the form of videos on TikTok social media, showed language use between care workers and the elderly, and were then analyzed using a sociolinguistic framework. Findings have shown that in the communication, the care workers manipulated honorifics (keigo). The results of data analysis show that in the TikTok videos, there is a language shift from keigo form (sonkeigo 'respect form', kenjōgo 'humble form') to teineigo 'polite form' and even shifted to futsuutai 'plain form'. This shift in honorifics is influenced by changes in (1) social position, regard (2) power, and intertwined, but the major (3) age, and (4) formality. The results of this research can educate migrant care workers in selecting a language appropriate to social factors to create a good relationship between care workers and the elderly in delivering services to the elderly in-home care.","PeriodicalId":91409,"journal":{"name":"Studies in media and communication","volume":"33 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141807306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context, social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat have become predominant for their effective use of temporary digital content that lasts for a brief period (usually 24 hours) before disappearing. Ephemerality has become the zeitgeist of the 21st century. In a world where immediacy and instant gratification are highly valued, the pattern of consumption of digital media is also aligned to such quick snippets of information rather than watching a long video. This paradigm shift is redefining how people perceive time and memory in the digital age. This preliminary study analyses the effect of such ephemeral digital narratives on the memory retention of consumers and also explores the implications of such content on cultural and collective memory. A sample of 100 participants ranging from the age of 18-35 years, were exposed to curated ephemeral content from Instagram and Snapchat for seven days. Participants were exposed to different media types, presentation styles, and cognitive demands. Daily surveys examined their memory retention using various question formats. The study examined ten hypotheses using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to determine how media type (video, image, both), presentation style (visual, verbal/textual, both), cognitive processing demands (shallow, deep processing), and question format affect recall effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":91409,"journal":{"name":"Studies in media and communication","volume":"84 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141808021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study presents a systematic overview of previous studies on social media users' personal news curation practices. In the study of personal news curation practices on social media, gaps in themes, theories, variables, and conceptual frameworks are to be found and filled by means of this systematic review of the literature. The goal of the study is to provide a causal framework that illustrates the connections between the various research items.Twenty papers that were taken from the Scopus, Google Scholar and Web of Science databases are reviewed using the PRISMA method. Two main study themes, fifteen theories or models, and a comprehensive causality framework emerged from the examination.We recommend that future research on the personal news curation practices provide empirical studies on different types especially the personal productive news curation on social media, widen the field of research and adopt different theories or models according to the new social media environments and contexts. Researchers are also expected to adopt a more complete and detailed systematic approach to review the literature on the study of personal news curation on social media.","PeriodicalId":91409,"journal":{"name":"Studies in media and communication","volume":"57 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141807396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary goal is to discover new patterns of online social interactions, shed light on the concept of selective exposure, and rigorously chronicle the activities of critical actors in this digital network. We conducted the data gathering process on May 25, 2023, specifically focusing on the selected phrase \"Banjir Jakarta.\" For a thorough study, NVivo 12 Plus compiled a significant dataset of 3,427 tweets. We divide the research findings into three distinct sections: the volume of conversations, the various categories of influencers involved, the prevailing sentiment and conversational tone of these influencers, and an exploration of the most frequently employed words in these discussions. This study highlights the significant impact of nanoinfluencers in these talks, accounting for the vast majority (93.70%) of participants. Furthermore, it emphasizes the active debate around the most likely presidential candidates for 2024. This speech had two prominent figures, Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who both elicited different tones and sentiments. Within this complex communication landscape, influencers emerge as crucial entities actively shaping public attitude and discourse, spanning news portals and individual social media profiles. Finally, this study highlights the enormous importance of social media, particularly Twitter, in shaping public awareness and driving political conversations, notably in crisis management and future presidential candidates.","PeriodicalId":91409,"journal":{"name":"Studies in media and communication","volume":"13 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141806752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is apparent that the government of South Africa has previously started nation-building initiatives, but it is unclear how much the public is involved in the design and implementation of these campaigns. In this study, the contemporary literature on communication in the context of nation-building was critically engaged to clarify the role that communication plays in nation-building. The study concludes that the two-way symmetrical model is the best as it emphasises honest information exchanges between the public and the government through interactive communication. In order to effectively communicate with both internal and external target audiences and advance the agenda for nation-building, the South African government should employ communication techniques that will create and maintain enduring relationships with the public based on mutual trust by implementing participatory communication approaches to nation-building.","PeriodicalId":91409,"journal":{"name":"Studies in media and communication","volume":"70 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141808183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We conducted a systematic search on the Baidu search engine and screened 55 relevant websites. The quality of these websites was assessed using the DISCERN instruments. Our findings suggest that the quality of information on websites about perinatal depression is predominantly 'poor', with commercial sites constituting the entirety of the sample, although health information content provided by non-profit organizations demonstrating significantly higher quality. There was a significant negative correlation between search engine rankings and the quality of information on perinatal depression, suggesting that higher quality content is less likely to be searched for and may hinder access to reliable information. This study highlights the urgent need for mechanisms to prioritize the display of high-quality information in search engine results to provide better assistance to Chinese patients with perinatal depression.","PeriodicalId":91409,"journal":{"name":"Studies in media and communication","volume":" 14","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141833866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
