Authors Ravi Kumar and Randhir Kumar designed the study, performed the statistical analysis, wrote the protocol and wrote the first draft of the manuscript. Authors AK and SKS managed the analyses of the study. Author PK managed the literature searches. All authors read and approved the final manuscript. ABSTRACT A study was undertaken to estimate general and specific combining in brinjal through diallel analysis involving 6 parents. The combining ability analysis revealed highly significant differences among the treatments for all the parameters studied except days to 50% flowering and number of primary branches per plant. The genotype SBRB-6/12 was found best general combiner for number of fruit per plant and yield per plant. The top three crosses (SBRB-3/12 x SBRB-2/12, SBRB-6/12 x SBRB-3/12 and KS-224 x Swarna Mani) with high per se performance have exhibited high sca effects for yield. Both additive and non-additive gene actions were operating for all the characters except days to 50% flowering, fruit diameter and number of primary branches/plant. Therefore, the general combiner can be exploited for the creation of varieties lines, and the presence of specific combining in the hybrids.","PeriodicalId":91221,"journal":{"name":"British journal of applied science & technology","volume":"21 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42013142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This justifies the reuse of wastewater to provide additional quantities of water for different uses to reduce water deficits. In this context, the wastewater from the city of Ouagadougou is treated by lagoons for its reuse on gardening plots downstream the station. Since several years these plots have been disaffected and abandoned due to the quality of the discharged water. This work aims at experimenting complementary treatments to improve water quality for agricultural reuse. Indeed, pilots of infiltration-percolation on sand and on wood fibres have been implemented during 3 months in the Institute of Research in Applied Sciences and Technologies. A comparative analysis of the treated waters according to the ISO and AFNOR standards indicated that the various filters gave satisfactory purification efficiencies which are in agreement with the quality objectives imposed by the national standards for parameters such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD 5 ), nitrogen and faecal coliforms. The respective removals of COD by the sand filter (FS) and the wood fibres filter (FC) were 94% and 91%, while BOD 5 was eliminated with efficiencies of 84% and 64% respectively. Regarding nutrients such as ammonium and nitrate, the station gave the effluents contents conform to the discharge standards but the filters have made it possible to improve their quality. FS and FC gave satisfactory efficiencies of 97% and 92% for the faecal coliforms removal. Concerning faecal streptococci and Bacillus cereus , it is noted non-negligible with respective efficiencies of 84 and 93% with the wood fibres while the sand allowed efficiencies of 79 and 88% for the same parameters. In general, the additional treatment by the pilots has made it possible to improve the quality of the water coming from the station.","PeriodicalId":91221,"journal":{"name":"British journal of applied science & technology","volume":" ","pages":"1-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42578782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reaction conditions were investigated by orthogonal test. For the oxidation of phenanthrene to phenanthrenequinone the optimum conditions as follows: molar ratio of TBHP to phenanthrene: 5:1; MoO 2 (acac) 2 (catalyster) content: 0.05 g(per 5 g phenanthrene); reaction time: 4 h. And for its kinetics a laboratory scale completely mixed reactor was used. By using the orthogonal test and mathematic ways, such as Runge-Kutta’s integral and revised simplex for optimization, estimation of kinetic parameters was conducted. The chemical kinetic equations were obtained. These parameters could be utilized for the design, operation and optimization of the reactor in oxidation of phenanthrene to phenanthrenequinone.","PeriodicalId":91221,"journal":{"name":"British journal of applied science & technology","volume":"20 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43448538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose an innovative approach for action recognition, where a novel fuzzy representation based on temporal motion templates is developed to model human actions as time series of low-dimensional descriptors. An NB (Na¨ıve Bayes) classifier is trained on these features for action classification. When tested on a realistic action dataset incorporating a large collection of video data, the results demonstrate that the approach is able to achieve a recognition rate of as high as 93.7%, while remaining tractable for real-time operation.","PeriodicalId":91221,"journal":{"name":"British journal of applied science & technology","volume":" ","pages":"1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44064276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present work, thin films of pure PVA, pure HPC and their PVA/HPC blends were prepared using the solution casting method. The mechanical properties of the prepared thin films such as stress-strain curve, tensile modulus and tensile strength as well as elongation at break were investigated. The obtained results show that there is an increase in the elastic range and decrease in the hardness of the resulting blends by increasing the concentration of HPC due to the different molecular morphology. In addition, the range in which it would responds elastically to external stress was decreased to some extent.","PeriodicalId":91221,"journal":{"name":"British journal of applied science & technology","volume":" ","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43105684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All authors read and approved the final manuscript. ABSTRACT The goal of this study is to adopt international standard criteria to carefully select sites to host seismic stations in Minna and Abakaliki, Nigeria, that can give reliable seismic data with high network detectability, monitor local seismicity and record local events with improved accuracy. By this, mistakes made during the construction of existing stations in Nigeria would be avoided systematically. To achieve these therefore, detailed field assessments were carried out to select most suitable site amongst the four potentials sites earlier proposed to host the sensitive seismic equipment for each area. These steps were later followed with detailed geological, geophysical and seismological investigations to ascertain the rock types at the sites; determine the depth of the bedrock where the sensor would be placed; and evaluate the signal to noise ratios and sources of possible noise to the pre-selected sites. Results from the various investigations have helped a team of seismologists, geologists, geophysicists and GIS experts drawn from the Centre for Geodesy and Geodynamics (CGG), Federal Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to select most reliable sites for seismic stations in Minna and Abakaliki. As this is the first time these kind of investigations have been undertaken to select a site for seismic equipment in Nigeria, it is expected this study would set standard practices for future site selection for sensitive equipment in Nigeria and in the sub-region. equipment for each area. The drought condition was created first day from transplanting based on Irrigation water (IW):Cumulative Pan Evaporation (CPE) of soil. Experiment was laid out with 10 genotypes by adopting FRBD with three replications and two treatments of 1 IW:CPE and 0.5 IW:CPE. The result revealed that the reductions in chlorophyll content, Fv/Fm, chlorophyll stability index (CSI), soluble protein and yield were noticed at drought condition (0.5 IW/CPE). The genotypes LE 114, LE 57, and LE 118 which showed significantly less reduction in the above parameters during drought were considered as drought tolerant. ABA content and quality characters such as total soluble solids (TSS), lycopene content were increased under drought condition. Genotypes LE 1 and LE 125 which recorded the lowest chlorophyll content, Fv/Fm, CSI, soluble protein and higher ABA content ultimately poor yield were considered as drought susceptible.","PeriodicalId":91221,"journal":{"name":"British journal of applied science & technology","volume":"21 1","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41781254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
