Drawing on data from the Growing Up in Ireland (GUI) study (9-year-old cohort), this paper aims to compare family processes within stepmother (n=89) and stepfather families (n=295). No stepfathers were primary caregivers to their stepchild(ren), whereas stepmothers tended to assume this role. Stepmothers were less romantically happy than either stepfathers or biological mothers in stepfather families and experienced more interparental conflict than stepfathers. They also had less close and more conflicted relationships with their stepchild(ren) than mothers in stepfather families. These findings are in line with previous research and point to the applicability of international research to stepfamilies in Ireland. The findings suggest that stepmother families may face particular challenges and may benefit from parenting and relationship support.","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"33 1","pages":"100-106"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2012.708900","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59315461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Change and development in complex operational systems create a need for new theoretical concepts that can integrate concepts of system, culture, sensemaking and action. Such concepts can then support new interventions to understand and manage system risk proactively, to design systems to operate effectively, and to intervene to change organisations with a higher degree of success. The aim of this review is to consider examples of such initiatives in areas such as risk assessment and operational design and examine whether they demonstrate the potential for achieving impact.","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"33 1","pages":"122-128"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2012.709162","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59315080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the Department of Psychology at Trinity College Dublin was founded 50 years ago, teaching and research in perception was based on each sense in isolation, with a strong focus on vision. Recent research has revealed that perception in one sensory modality can be significantly modified by inputs from the other senses. Moreover, such cross-sensory interactions seem to occur much earlier in information processing than was historically assumed. Here we highlight some of the main studies that best demonstrate how research in multisensory perception has enhanced our understanding of how the human brain processes information from the external world. In particular, we focus on higher-level perceptual tasks such as object, face, and body perception, and the perception of socially meaningful information, such as emotion and attrac...","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"33 1","pages":"65-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2012.706794","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59315346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this time period conceptions of childhood have developed from viewing the child as a passive recipient of decisions imposed upon them by adults, to the recognition of the importance of children's perspectives on, and participation in issues that affect their lives. Consequently, there is now a growing body of literature demonstrating how participatory research approaches are relevant with children who are considered to be ‘vulnerable’. The term ‘vulnerable’ refers to a diverse group of children, including those in care or involved in the juvenile justice system, those experiencing poverty, or children with additional needs requirements, and the level of physical, psychological or social risk that each child faces can vary substantially. Participatory methods have been advocated as a conduit for conveying the wealth of children's experiences and helping to bring their opinio...","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"33 1","pages":"94-99"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2012.706796","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59315353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is widely accepted that compensatory strategies are the treatment of choice in the rehabilitation of PM deficits. The advent of new technologies has broadened the array of external memory aids to include potentially useful personal digital assistants (PDAs) in alleviating PM deficits. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an unmodified off-the-shelf PDA (Palm IIIe®) in compensating for everyday PM problems. Five participants with ABI were trained to programme the PDA to prompt them with an audible cue and on-screen message at appropriate times. Seven personally relevant PM tasks were set up weekly to measure the usefulness of the PDA as compared to relying on memory alone. An A-B quasi-experimental design was employed which consisted of two phases: the A (memory only) baseline phase and the B (PDA strategy) intervention phase. Task performance was compared between phases A and B. In addition to a number of other measures, the Brief Symptom Inventory-18 (BSI-18), a relatively new and unexamined measure in the Irish context, was administered. Based on a quota sample, data were collected from a sample of 763 participants. In line with previous findings, females reported significantly higher levels of symptomatology than males on all three subscales (Somatization, Depression and Anxiety) and the Global Severity Index. Final year students were also noted to have significantly worse mental health than non-final year students. In addition, differences were noted between the present Irish female sample and US women in BSI-18 scores. Results support the use of the BSI-18 in Ireland. The development of specific Irish norms is therefore proposed and provisional norms for third-level college students are provided.","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"58 1","pages":"43-62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2012.672247","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to assess the construct validity of the scale and estimate the correlations between informant and self-report scores using confirmatory factor analysis. The analysis was based on data from a sample of 202 primary and post-primary school pupils (42.3% males) with a mean age of 12.5 years. A confirmatory factor analytic model with the five-factor structure of the SDQ for both informant and self-report scores was specified and tested. Fit statistics indicated acceptable model fit. The findings suggest that SDQ possesses reasonable measurement properties for both the self-report and informant-rated versions.","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"33 1","pages":"17-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2011.649569","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article presents a qualitative phenomenological exploration of clinical psychologists' journal reflections on their psychotherapeutic practice and on their experience of attending psychotherapy training days. Previous research on clinical psychologists' practice has been predominantly quantitative, so this research adds to the limited qualitative research in this area. The journals of seven clinical psychologists underwent a close analysis with interpretative phenomenological analysis. Three master themes were identified in relation to the clinical psychologists' psychotherapy practice and experience of training in this area – Impact on the self, Impact on emotions and energy and Developing and protecting the self. Based on an overview of the relevant literature in developmental, social and clinical psychology, three main assets contributing to ‘bouncing back’ from adversity are identified in order to establish their contribution to beginning teachers’ (first year of teaching) efforts to cope with negative events at school. Specifically, the present study sought to examine how these assets (strengths, social support and coping skills) that have been found to facilitate resilience in extant research, translate to the experiences of teachers’ methods of recovering from adverse events (Study 1) and to gauge the relative contribution of these assets in facilitating the ability to recover from adversity (Study 2). Results indicate that the assets that a beginning teacher brings to the encounters have a powerful influence on recovery fr...","PeriodicalId":91174,"journal":{"name":"The Irish journal of psychology","volume":"32 1","pages":"92-104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/03033910.2011.613189","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59314925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
