Through the evolution of working with Tegrity, Collaborate, and ZOOM the author shares the lived experience. The work of Max van Manen, a phenomenological researcher, serves as the framework. Descriptions are included of experiences from actual online classes. Research supports the findings: communication is essential in online classes; establishing a community of learners provides support to all involved; and students need to be accountable to themselves, the class and to the professors.","PeriodicalId":91062,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary issues in education research (Littleton, Colo.)","volume":"31 1","pages":"81-86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89149402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Informed by the SETT framework in which the technology choice is informed by student, environment, and task (Dell, Newton, & Petroff, 2017; Zabala, 2005), this paper is designed for a learner-profile consistent with learners who need concrete and visual approaches to optimize receptive and expressive communication. The visual and interactive approaches shared here include Universal Design, graphic organizers, and comic strip creations, and may appeal to teachers of students on the autism spectrum as well as others who are responsive to visual supports. While it is not possible to predict the exact nature of the environment and tasks at hand for these students, the paper leaves those decisions in the hands of the readers. Approaches and suggestions shared here reflect practitioner experience, findings from the literature, and data from a 2016 course, in which a small number of diverse students reinforced the concept that UDL approaches increased their engagement and success.","PeriodicalId":91062,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary issues in education research (Littleton, Colo.)","volume":"144 1","pages":"43-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74493331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To understand the acculturation of students from mainland China to Taiwan, the present study applies Berry’s(1997) two-dimensional model of acculturation, together with the concept of cultural types as its analytical framework, using focus group interviews to analyze different directions of acculturation among students from mainland China in Taiwan. The results show that regarding personal values, due to Taiwan’s restrictions on students from mainland China and the fact that they must eventually return to their place of origin, the acculturation of students from mainland China mainly takes the “separation/segregation” mode. Regarding peer selection, due to differences between individuals in their interpersonal choices, they may adopt “separation/segregation” or “integration” modes. Regarding the period of residence in Taiwan, as students from mainland China spend longer in Taiwan, they tend more towards “integration.” However, when teachers show greater contempt for the culture of mainland China, the acculturation of students from mainland China tends toward the “separation/segregation” mode.","PeriodicalId":91062,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary issues in education research (Littleton, Colo.)","volume":"56 1","pages":"73-82"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84526927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data collection stems from interviews and surveys of graduates of urban high schools, who transitioned into college or careers. Findings from this qualitative phenomenological research contains participant recommendations to the specific actions of educators, as well as ideas,or appropriate learning environments, to foster the resilience and self-esteem which contributes to student academic and social success, leading to adult personal and profession success. Implications of this research include the significance of consideration of the impact of teacher behaviors on student academic and social emotional success within the classrooms of urban schools.","PeriodicalId":91062,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary issues in education research (Littleton, Colo.)","volume":"2012 1","pages":"15-22"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73701444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Academic leaders are well-positioned to initiate change and transform the academic landscape. However, many advance to leadership positions with minimal orientation to the role. Moreover, leaders in academic nursing often have expertise as clinicians and administrators, and not as academics. It is incumbent on nurse leaders to acquire needed competencies to fulfill the academic role. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to immerse leaders in an exploration of steps to initiate and sustain change in the teaching and learning process. Self-reported low- and high-level outcomes were analyzed using Kirkpatrick’s Model (1994) to evaluate the effectiveness of the immersion in preparing leaders to build and sustain a quality academic culture. Leadership immersions were implemented to transform leaders into stewards of teaching excellence. Pre- and post-immersion surveys captured data across three levels: satisfaction, knowledge and skill acquisition, and change in behavior. Seventy-three participants were evaluated. Participants for inclusion in the three-month analysis culminated in a 41% response rate. Findings were analyzed using ANOVA and t-tests. Further analysis was performed using Cohen’s d to determine effect size. Three-month follow-up surveys revealed no significant effect change (p<0.05). Results suggest immersion is effective in preparing leaders of academic nursing to build a quality academic culture. Through immersion, leaders established a collective vision of teaching excellence and proficiency in confronting and resolving actual and desired teaching practices, while enriching the life and work of faculty.","PeriodicalId":91062,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary issues in education research (Littleton, Colo.)","volume":"214 1","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75146085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That study found that the international subjects valued some soft skills, such as creativity, as being more important to success than did the subjects in the United States. Because of the importance of soft skills to success in the accounting profession worldwide, I sought to determine if teaching methodology in the accounting classroom in the United States could affect the perceptions of students regarding the importance of traits to success in the accounting profession. Three particular new methodologies were added to the accounting courses in which the study was run; a team debate, a writing assignment justifying an impairment decision in an unclear situation, and a team presentation in which creativity was a very significant percentage of the final grade. The results revealed that the traits of persuasiveness, good oral communication skills, good marketing skills, and creativity were ranked significantly more important by the student subjects at the end of the semester term than they were at the beginning of the semester term. Based on these results, accounting educators need to experiment to find methodologies that relate to their specific accounting courses that will help students realize the importance of soft skills for professional success in accounting.","PeriodicalId":91062,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary issues in education research (Littleton, Colo.)","volume":"2 1","pages":"9-14"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-02-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89012039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated the relationship between children’s health and health education in New Zealand and Japan using a qualitative interpretative descriptive design method and semistructured interviews with preschool teachers. Major children’s health issues identified by preschool teachers in New Zealand were asthma, allergies, and dental hygiene. Although few preschool children are overweight in New Zealand, it becomes a serious concern in primary school. Identified as a suspected cause of children’s health problems was parents providing their children with sweet and/or unhealthy foods. Preschool teachers want parents to understand and implement health education, and they stated that parents’ education was necessary. In Japan, children’s health problems identified by teachers were allergies, food preferences, and sleep deprivation. The suspected causes included too much convenience, parents’ irregular lifestyles because they were busy, and parents’ depending on preschools to discipline children in ways that should be done at home. The goals for preschool health education were similar in New Zealand and Japan. The goals should be to obtain lifelong health knowledge, an ability to make wise health-related decisions in adulthood, and healthy lifestyle choices for themselves and their families. Some children’s health issues were beyond the scope of the abilities of individual preschools. Therefore, the entire nation and government should work together to cope with children’s health issues and health education.","PeriodicalId":91062,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary issues in education research (Littleton, Colo.)","volume":"22 1","pages":"219-224"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84821882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Organizational justice relates to positive developments of educational organizations. It refers to the sense of fairness and equality on aspects of organization policies and regulations relating to individual interests perceived by organizations’ internal members. This research first reviews the related literature to identify internal factors in the concept of organizational justice in higher education. The author designed a survey questionnaire to assess professors’ perceptions of organizational justice at their universities. The author sent out the questionnaires to Taiwanese professors with different research expertise at different universities. This research divided organizational justice into distributive justice, procedure justice, interpersonal justice, and information justice. Ultimately, 180 valid questionnaires were collected and analyzed. Four background variables (gender, age, position, and institutional type) showed statistical correlations with organizational justice in Taiwan’s higher education institutions.","PeriodicalId":91062,"journal":{"name":"Contemporary issues in education research (Littleton, Colo.)","volume":"57 1","pages":"231-240"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80158553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
