The essentials of XFEM is the well-known Finite Element Method (FEM) adding to degrees of freedom and enrichment functions, which serve to describe local discontinuities in the model. In XFEM, the fracture geometry is developed independent of the mesh, allowing it to move freely through the domain, without the need to adapt the mesh to discontinuity. In other words, the XFEM reproduces the discontinuity of the displacement field along the fracture, without discretizing this feature directly in the mesh. XFEM carry out the spatial discretization of two classic models in Fracture Mechanics: the single-edge-notch bending test (SEN (B)); and the disck-shaped compact tension test (CDT). The propagation criterion is based on the proportion of energy released and the stress intensity factors (SIF). The solutions provided by the XFEM numerical model indicated an excellent agreement with the results obtained from the experimental data.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43506731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These types of loads can occur in a normal service of bolt connection and they can lead to a failure. Two failure modes of the screw could occur: self-loosening of the screw or fatigue failure of the screw. The latter failure mode is analysed in the presented project focusing on an improvement of the existing design of the screws in terms of fatigue failure. The fatigue fracture of the screws, which are loaded by the transversal load, occurs normally in a groove of a first thread run of an engagement. A shape of the thread runout has some influence on stress in the thread therefore that shape can optimize to minimize the thread stress. Considering this, free shape optimisation was employed to find the best runout shape. As results of the presented work, the optimum design of the thread runout is proposed for the analysed conditions. The elaborated design of the cap screw brings significant improvement of the lifetime when the cycling tangential load occurs. In addition, the new design gives the better structural performance than the existing designs also for the cycling normal loads.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2168-9873.1000250","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44318045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prompt detection of oil spills would lead to swift remediation, improvement in national economy, and a reduction in the damage to the environment. The Ground Robotic Oil Spill Surveillance (GROSS) System is a novel system for early detection of oil spills using small mobile robots. A single GROSS unit is a mechanized robot employed to patrol beside designated pipelines. A Global Positioning System (GPS) is used for autonomous navigation, an ultrasonic sensor for avoiding obstacles, and gas sensors for spill detection. Once a spill is detected, an integrated camera module is used to take pictures of the oil spill site. Using Xbee radios, spill images and GPS location are transferred wirelessly to a computer in the base station to enable surveillance teams initiate established containment protocols. \u0000The GROSS system has been successfully tested on an underground crude oil pipeline at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources. The system’s ability to provide continuous surveillance along crude oil pipelines and wireless transmission of spill GPS location and images gives it the ability to detect oil spills quickly and ensure prompt response by surveillance teams.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41929807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are broadly used in designing new functional structures, such as energy absorption and noise mitigation materials. To analyze the behaviors of these materials, finite element models are generally adopted, which may require much time and labor to construct and implement. To simplify the numerical modelling, a novel Chiral Beam Element for finite element simulation is proposed in this paper. Both static and dynamic analyses are conducted and the numerical expense, i.e., the modelling procedures and the computational time, is reduced significantly when compared to traditional finite element models.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2168-9873.1000249","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41473642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to friction force generated between the moving belt and the masses, the friction model plays a significant role on the energy transfer between the contacting surfaces. Therefore, in this study a steady-state and a dynamic friction models are implemented. The influence of these friction models on the system response is investigated. Additionally, the both systems where subjected to a number of initial conditions, to address the system dependency on the initial conditions. The objective of the paper is to develop a suitable model of internal door panel for Toyota DX car, to conduct a transient dynamic structural analysis (stress and displacement analysis) of internal door panel by finite element method, to compare the performance of BFREC material with previously recommended materials of internal door panel. The door panel of Toyota Corolla DX model vehicle was used to develop the geometric model of the internal door panel by CATIA V5 R20 modeling software. This 3-D geometric model was imported to using ANSYS Workbench 15.0. The transient dynamic structural FEA was done after assigning loading and boundary conditions. The applied load considered for this analysis is the self-inertial weight of the panel due to the acceleration field produced while the door is closing. The equivalent stress and the displacement are noted and investigated to compare with the literatures revised. The result shows that, bamboo fiber reinforced epoxy composite panel has the smallest mass and equivalent stress values, as compared with the lignocellulosic composite and polypropylene one. Based on these realities, it is recommended that bamboo fiber reinforced with epoxy composite materials are suitable for internal structural automotive panel applications.","PeriodicalId":90573,"journal":{"name":"Journal of applied mechanical engineering","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2168-9873.1000247","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44447173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Underwater Robotic Oil Spill Surveillance (UROSS) system has been designed to provide constant and autonomous spill surveillance for subsea pipelines. M900 embedded Radio Frequency Identification tags and readers are used to identify pipeline section for surveillance. GY-521 gyrometer and XL-MaxSonar-WR1 ultrasound sensor are used for autonomous navigation beside the crude oil pipeline. Subsea crude oil spills are detected using a METS methane sensor. After spill detection, images of the spill site are captured with a L3C-400 Micro Ultras-Miniature Color Camera and spill location is obtained using Global Positioning System. Spill Images and location are transmitted to a remote PC on the nearest off shore platform using an Xbee Pro 900HP wireless Connection. An Ocean Signal rescueME Personal Beacon Locator also transmits a 406 MHz distress signal via satellite to Emergency Services indicating the identification of a spill. Finite Element Method analysis of the system showed its ability to withstand sea pressures at a depth of 2,250 m.
