Data from indepth interviews, focus groups and life stories were analyzed using grounded theory techniques through a non-essentialist gender approach. Among the Maya, statistics show that women drop out of school before middle school at a higher rate than men. However, it is also true that women more frequently attain a university education. The gathered evidence allows for the hypothesis that gender roles are changing, and the effects of patrifocal models of education in families are not necessarily always detrimental to women. These findings could help other Maya men and women as well as people of other Indigenous cultures by pointing out that it is possible for Indigenous peoples to surmount the barriers imposed by the modern educational systems on their nations.","PeriodicalId":90572,"journal":{"name":"Journal of American Indian education","volume":"50 1","pages":"61 - 79"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48621718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This qualitative study examined the experiences and perceptions of 10 gifted Diné students from low-income families who received full scholarships to attend a university-based summer residential program. Interviews revealed five themes: (1) affirming social interactions with teachers and peers; (2) life-changing experience; (3) positive academic experiences; (4) excitement and motivation; and (5) challenges met. When provided with opportunities in advanced classes that interest them, gifted Diné youth from low-income families had positive academic, social, and emotional experiences.","PeriodicalId":90572,"journal":{"name":"Journal of American Indian education","volume":"53 1","pages":"66 - 84"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41996421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It traces their work together through a review of selected documents that Demmert sent to Christensen that became the basis for the William Demmert Jr. Archives of the American Indian Learning Resource Center Library at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Leaders are in every walk of life, waiting for the opportunity to unlock the intangible characteristics that will set them apart, if but for a moment. But having had that moment, one will always know that one can be a leader when the need or the occasion warrants. Once a leader, always a leader, because we can only be true to what we are and have done. This article is the result of our desire to tell that story.
