There is a clear consensus that our current healthcare models are not well suited for our future generations, in that they cannot be scaled up in a cost-effective manner for the growing healthcare needs. To promote a rich dialogue between different constituents of healthcare, NetHealth 2014 will adopt a new workshop model of conversation between leaders from both medical and engineering communities. The aim of the one-day workshop is to promote a deeper dialogue leading to actual collaborations.","PeriodicalId":90536,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks : [proceedings]. Mobile and wireless networks are very different from the traditional Internet: mobility causes network addresses to change, mobile devices have access to multiple different networks, wireless network rates are highly variable, and delays on wireless networks are variable and often unacceptably high. These new realities cause current data transport protocols and the applications that rely on them to perform poorly (or not at all). This talk will describe Mosh and Sprout, two new protocols to overcome these problems. Mosh is a interactive terminal application for mobile networks, which has become a popular SSH replacement for mobile users since its release in April 2012. Sprout is a transmission control method for cellular wireless networks, a TCP replacement that delivers high throughput while bounding the end-to-end delay over cellular wireless networks. Sprout outperforms previous TCP variants as well as current videoconferencing protocols like Skype, Hangout, and Facetime over cellular networks. The talk will focus on the principles and practical considerations that went into the design of Mosh and Sprout. Mosh is joint work with Keith Winstein; Sprout is joint work with Keith Winstein and Anirudh Sivaraman (Keith and Anirudh are my PhD students).","PeriodicalId":90536,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks : [proceedings]. But the Internet of Everything makes that pale in comparison. After two decades of networking and communication, 99% of things are still not networked. The Internet of Everything will disrupt several industries. That means new opportunities, businesses, experiences, and services, and big opportunities for people, companies, and countries. The Internet of Everything demands an intelligent network — a distributed, application-centric networking, computing and storage platform that connects things together, connects things to the Network and connects people and things to the cloud in ways that just weren't possible, or even imaginable, before.","PeriodicalId":90536,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks : [proceedings]. Given rising energy prices and climate change, energy efficiency techniques that reduce the energy and carbon footprint of buildings is an important societal need. In this talk, I will argue that Information and Communication technologies (ICT) are a crucial component for achieving energy efficiency in smart buildings. I will describe demand-side load management techniques where users or intelligent building components take an active role in reducing and optimizing a building's energy footprint and also present present hurdles in achieving energy-efficiency through these methods. Finally, I will describe two of our recent efforts in demand-side load management via peak load shaving. Our first effort focuses on background load scheduling and coordination to transparently reduce peak electricity load without any change in user behavior, while our second technique uses small batteries and any available local renewable sources to shift supply to demand, rather than conventional techniques that adjust demand based on supply.","PeriodicalId":90536,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks : [proceedings]. Specific machine learning mechanisms are implemented for recognizing a target set of activities with both out-of-body and on-body processing arrangements. Impacts of energy consumption by the on-body sensors are analyzed in terms of activity detection accuracy for out-of-body processing. Impacts of limited processing abilities in the on-body scenario are also characterized in terms of detection accuracy, by varying the background processing load in the sensor units. Through a rigorous systems study, it is shown that an efficient human activity analytics system can be designed and operated even under energy and processing constraints of tiny on-body wearable sensors.</p>","PeriodicalId":90536,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks : [proceedings]. The image compression algorithm using Wavelet-Based Contourlet Transform(WBCT) with modified SPIHT can effectively code image with more discontinuities along curve lines. Predicted image is subtracted from original image to give residual image, residual image has lots of discontinuous curve lines, it is typically 2-dimensional and curve singularities image. The result of the image coding compression scheme perform is much better than JPEG and AIC and almost is the same with JPEG-2000.","PeriodicalId":90536,"journal":{"name":"International Conference on Communication Systems and Networks : [proceedings].
