Nitsun","doi":"10.13186/GROUP.40.1.0037","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.13186/GROUP.40.1.0037","url":null,"abstract":"In my previous article in GROUP, “The Shadow of the Group in the Dawn of the 21st Century” (Nitsun, 2000), I noted the paradoxical status of group psychotherapy in the United Kingdom at the century’s end. On one hand, the application of group methods in public and private services had visibly increased in the last few decades of the twentieth century. On the other, there was limited recognition of group psychotherapy as a powerful form of therapy in its own right, with its own theoretical lineage and training requirements. Much of the development in group services was fueled by notions of efficiency and expediency rather than by an appreciation of the specific value of group psychotherapy. Fifteen years after my article was published, I believe the paradox still largely exists; in fact, it may have deepened. Group methods have proliferated in services in the United Kingdom, but there remains little regard for the integrity of the practice, its theoretical underpinnings, and, in particular, the need for adequately trained group practitioners. While writing about the situation in the United Kingdom, these descriptions tally with informal commentaries from North America, similarly highlighting the disregard for key aspects of the discipline of group psychotherapy, including the problem of establishing a consistent and robust training framework for the many practitioners running groups. I take these points further in my recently published book, Beyond the Anti-group (Nitsun, 2015). In a chapter titled “Group Psychotherapy on the Edge,” I describe the ambivalence about group psychotherapy in the wider professional mental health community in the United Kingdom and the fragile status accorded group therapy.","PeriodicalId":90511,"journal":{"name":"Group","volume":"60 4 1","pages":"37 - 43"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77852123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They can be seen in our therapeutic work with groups. This article argues for the necessity of bridging identities and of fluidity and multiplicity in gender identity, side by side with gender fixity. Group therapy and group analysis can give ample opportunities for achieving this goal through mutual resonances and mirroring, thus enriching our inner worlds with various patterns of identification, overcoming narcissistic vulnerabilities, and strengthening our unique gender identities.","PeriodicalId":90511,"journal":{"name":"Group","volume":"38 1","pages":"149 - 163"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78300379","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recovery from addiction often occurs in intentional communities such as self-help fellowships, where the covert dynamics that enabled addiction in the family of origin are replaced by explicitly negotiated boundaries and free expression of affect. The functional psychotherapy group is an intentional family-like group that facilitates joining an intentional community of recovery such as Alcoholics Anonymous. This article examines the preparation of the group psychotherapist for conducting a well-functioning psychotherapy group for recovering addicts and their family members. Four aspects of preparing the group psychotherapist for practicing effectively with recovering addicts are considered: personal experience in recovery from addiction as a family disease, including the use of a sponsor and attendance at self-help group meetings; personal experience in psychotherapy and/or training groups; personal experience in group relations conference work; and the capacity to bring one's body and mind into the role of group psychotherapist.","PeriodicalId":90511,"journal":{"name":"Group","volume":"53 1","pages":"311 - 322"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81090295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exploring the similarities and differences between these two modalities helps us appreciate the contribution of each system, design comprehensive and effective treatment plans for patients, and better understand the process of recovery. Moreover, the conversation introduces the uninitiated psychotherapist to basic principles of addiction and recovery, in particular, 12-step recovery. For those already familiar with addiction and 12-step recovery, the discussion clarifies salient recovery concepts and interventions.","PeriodicalId":90511,"journal":{"name":"Group","volume":"124 1","pages":"273 - 294"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87798091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
