Decentering Whiteness by Group

Abstract

Abstract:Racism produces and reproduces Whiteness, a social construct that is reinforced by Western epistemology. Healing from toxic Whiteness can only happen in a group. The author describes the conceptual landscape for a psychodynamic social healing process to decenter Whiteness. Referencing critical race theory, the ethics of ubuntu, Native American restorative circles, and foundational concepts from group analysis, these approaches inform the Whiteness Learning Group that aims to decenter Whiteness.
