A key function of Crosswatch is self-localization - the estimation of the user's location relative to the crosswalks in the current traffic intersection. Such information may be vital to users with low or no vision to ensure that they know which crosswalk they are about to enter, and are properly aligned and positioned relative to the crosswalk. However, while computer vision-based methods have been used [1,9,14] for finding crosswalks and helping blind travelers align themselves to them, these methods assume that the entire crosswalk pattern can be imaged in a single frame of video, which poses a significant challenge for a user who lacks enough vision to know where to point the camera so as to properly frame the crosswalk. In this paper we describe work in progress that tackles the problem of crosswalk detection and self-localization, building on recent work [8] describing techniques enabling blind and visually impaired users to acquire 360° image panoramas while turning in place on a sidewalk. The image panorama is converted to an aerial (overhead) view of the nearby intersection, centered on the location that the user is standing at, so as to facilitate matching with a template of the intersection obtained from Google Maps satellite imagery. The matching process allows crosswalk features to be detected and permits the estimation of the user's precise location relative to the crosswalk of interest. We demonstrate our approach on intersection imagery acquired by blind users, thereby establishing the feasibility of the approach.</p>","PeriodicalId":90403,"journal":{"name":"... In this paper, we present a novel head pose estimation system by performing head region detection using the Kinect [2], followed by face detection, feature tracking, and finally head pose estimation using an active camera. Ten feature points on the face are defined and tracked by an Active Appearance Model (AAM). We propose to use the scene flow approach to estimate the head pose from 2D video sequences. This estimation is based upon a generic 3D head model through the prior knowledge of the head shape and the geometric relationship between the 2D images and a 3D generic model. We have tested our head pose estimation algorithm with various cameras at various distances in real time. The development of builtin cameras for mobile devices provides a new way of collecting dietary information by acquiring images of foods and beverages. The ability of image analysis techniques to automatically segment and identify food items from food images becomes imperative. Food images, usually consisting of plates, bowls and glasses, are often affected by lighting and specular highlights which present difficulties for image analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel single-image specular highlight removal method to detect and remove specular highlights in food images. We use independent components analysis (ICA) to separate the specular and diffuse components from the original image using only one image. Though the coding efficiency is high, the computational complexity is expensive. This paper presents a proposed algorithm to reduce the encoding time of enhancement layer through probability analysis. Firstly two classes are defined, and the Bayes Classifier decides whether the current macroblock belongs to Big Block class or Small Block class. Then an early termination strategy is checked for ignoring some inter modes. When inter-layer residual prediction is used, the optimal inter mode is set as the best inter mode of co-located macroblock in base layer. For the intra modes, the INTRA_16×16 is skipped based on statistical data. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm reduces computational complexity with negligible video quality loss and bit rate increment when compared with reference software and other methods.","PeriodicalId":90403,"journal":{"name":"... In this paper, we provide an overview and analysis of two existing technologies which are based on HTTP streaming: Smooth Streaming and HTTP Live Streaming. Further, we propose an enhancement for HTTP Streaming, called BSD-based HTTP streaming. However, every user wishes to use as much bandwidth as possible to receive a high-quality video; then, congestion control should be addressed. This paper proposes a collaborative mobile architecture to model receiver (in this case user) behaviour using congestion control and reliable strategies to stimulate user cooperation in multicast live streaming. Thus, an author's protocol named Scalable Reliable Multicast Stair Hybrid (SRMSH) is presented as new hybrid multiple layer mechanism for multicast congestion control providing detection and recovery loss. The SPPE can locate errors in the compressed I-frame bit stream and this system design can be applied to the MPEG2 wireless video applications. The SPPE is based on the information hiding technique. This SPPE algorithm is proven to have better performance than other traditional algorithms, and is very suitable for use in multipoint communications. In this paper three error concealment (EC) algorithms: previous coded block linear error concealment (PCB-EC), four neighbors linear error concealment (4N-EC) and eight neighbors linear error concealment (8N-EC) were implemented and tested. We found that the proposed SPPE and 4N-EC algorithm together can achieve PSNR increments of 8.2 dB after recovery while other algorithms [1-3] can only improve 1-2 dB after recovery.","PeriodicalId":90403,"journal":{"name":"...
