In recent years, mutual aid projects have surged globally, with scholars pointing to the COVID-19 pandemic as a key driver of communities being forced to respond to the unfolding social and environmental crises, alongside state abandonment. In this paper, we discuss how cycling has been taken up by communities disproportionately harmed by colonial systems. Using a decolonial feminist participatory action research approach, the authors collaborated with The Bike Brigade, a non-profit bicycle delivery organization that partners with mutual aid organizations. Using arts-based methods and semi-structured interviews, we draw on the perspectives of 2SLGBTQ+ and racialized cyclists who volunteer with The Bike Brigade. A key theme of the research was the unique way in which research colleagues used bicycles to participate in community care by embodying mutual aid values: community thriving, resource reallocation and solidarity. Thus, this paper puts forth mutual aid as a potential framework for understanding radical mobility practices to foster community care.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"151 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139259693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study employs a comprehensive approach by integrating the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), theory of interpersonal behaviour (TIB), and the technology acceptance model (TAM). Additionally, variables such as policy support, habits, external factors, and perceived bicycling conditions are also considered. A sample of 450 respondents from Delhi, the capital city of India, was collected to assess their intention to use bike sharing. The study employed Structural Equation Modelling, to examine the relationships among variables. The findings demonstrate that the research model effectively explains residents’ intention to use bike share. Factors such as perceived ease of use, behavioural attitude, subjective norms, and habits have direct and positive effects on the intention to use bike share. Notably, perceived ease of use, behavioural attitude, and policy support have the most substantial impact on the intention to use bike share. Conversely, perceived bicycling conditions and external factors exert negative effects on bike share usage intentions. This study provides valuable insights into the acceptance of bike sharing and offers a strategic direction for promoting bike sharing in Indian cities.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134991906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With its population of over 10 million, Jakarta faces environmental challenges such as severe traffic congestion and air pollution. This study used mixed methods and triangulation of data collection to investigate the capital’s relocation challenges and the prospects the nation’s development. The methods include interviews with key informants in selected government agencies and non-governmental agencies, as well as content analysis of relevant secondary data and information. The results contribute to our understanding of the socioeconomic, political, and environmental impacts of relocating a capital city in an archipelagic country like Indonesia. The paper concludes that the proposed new capital’s location in Kalimantan offers a more sustainable alternative with the potential for economic growth and ecological preservation. It could serve as a symbol of national identity and a representation of the nation’s advancement.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":" 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135242669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Very little research effort has been made in cities of developing countries like India to incorporate the user’s perspective in evolving walkability indices. This research study is an attempt to develop a walkability index from the user’s perspective in a developing environment, which shall aid the city planners in evaluating the quality of the walking environment objectively and systematically. For the development of the walkability index in the present study, empirical investigations were carried out in the Dwarka sub-city comprising street surveys incorporating pedestrian perspective and pedestrian counts. A fuzzy analytical hierarchy process with extent analysis has been performed, incorporating user ratings on critical walkability parameters to estimate the criteria weights and evolving a new path-level walkability index. It is concluded that this index exhibits a better correlation with pedestrian count when compared to the walkability index based on the existing prevalent approach adopted in the Indian context. The new walkability index will aid city planners in identifying specific pedestrian-related shortcomings as well as assist in evolving informed decision making to prioritize infrastructure investments.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":" 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135291530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross-sectional and mixed-method approach were employed, collecting primary data from 113 students through an online questionnaire. Multiple linear regression analysis and ordinal logistic regression explored the relationships between generated trips and socio-demographic attributes, including age, household size, vehicle ownership, educational level, income, and trip purpose. Age and household size were significant influencers of trip generation in the multiple linear regression. The ordinal logistic regression showed that, males are 2.40 times more likely to generate higher trip counts than females. Individuals aged 16–21 are 0.11 times less likely to produce more trips compared to older age groups. Single-occupant households have a 0.09 times lower likelihood of generating more trips than households with two or more occupants. However, individuals attending morning and afternoon lectures, only morning lectures, and morning and evening lectures among other activities have substantially higher odds of producing more trips, with odds ratios of 22.14, 15, and 567, respectively, compared to those exclusively attending evening lectures. Recommendations include improving shuttle services, pedestrian infrastructure, and promoting sustainable mobility solutions tailored to student demographics.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"64 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135540126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Walking and cycling are essential active modes of transport that can improve city residents’ well-being and economic vitality. However, their adoption as mobility choices depends on infrastructure limitations and residents’ perception of their safety. This study investigates the impact of socio-demographic and neighborhood characteristics on the safety perception of active mobility within the Accra metropolis of Ghana. The study utilized survey data on residents’ mobility habits and willingness to use active transport modes for daily commutes. Most of the respondents are permanent residents of Accra, and 51% are between 18–35 years old. The developed random parameter ordered logit model reveals that the perception of safety varies across the population and is influenced by respondents’ demographic characteristics and neighborhood configuration. Notably, factors related to walking duration to bus stops, income level, and household size, unplanned neighborhoods, among others, decrease residents’ safety perception of active mobility. The study offers valuable insights that can aid in planning future urban active mobility systems in Accra to establish safer and more sustainable transportation choices for the city’s residents.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"70 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135809504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this is rarely the case. On the one hand, planners and policymakers rely on incomplete (quantitative) data and policy tours that are unable to document the full extent of cycling or how it is experienced. While recent studies have expanded to include qualitative methods, they are predominantly conducted in one place, limiting our ability to draw international comparisons. The Netherlands is a popular destination for such tours and is generally regarded as one of the best places in the world for cycling. But what about people who, for a variety of reasons, have lived in different countries? Their knowledge, experiences and reflections on cycling are rarely featured in planning. To redress this, we interviewed participants who have international experience, capturing beyond aspects of policy tourism, illuminating how: (1) mixed land-use patterns, (2) incentivizing cycling as a mode choice, and (3) cycle networks and safety are vital to cycling participation. We advance the cycling research agenda by examining these findings and proposing changes best suited to low-cycling cities.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"53 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136022596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet the relationship between economic competitiveness and sustainability agendas in national innovation policy is an uneven one. We aim to unpack this relationship by analysing the position of cycling in Swedish innovation policy, focusing on the funding of projects within the field of sustainable mobility. We apply a critical theoretical approach and build on Hartmut Rosa’s critical work on modernity and acceleration, Sheller and Urry’s theories on mobilities – including contributions from followers to this field – and critical innovation studies. The result of our analysis for cycling is threefold. First, the conceptualisation of ‘progress’ does not help to place cycling high on the innovation agenda. Second, the bicycle and cycling have difficulties appearing as ‘new’, in contrast to the car and driving. Third, the unreflexivity regarding automation, digitisation, and sharing prevents taking account of negative effects on cycling and obstructs a fundamental questioning of automobility. In our conclusion, we propose a different view of progress, of which the current interpretation seems to be preventing innovation policy from having a stronger sustainability agenda. An alternative interpretation of progress logically also questions the role and primacy of technological novelties.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136295256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a lot of research is needed to improve the situation of active mobility, especially concerning inhibiting factors in the choice of active means of transport. For reasons such as the high volume and speed of motorised traffic, heavy noise, and pollution levels, urban space is often associated with increased stress. The generation and provision of stress data are therefore of particularly high importance for urban planning. The citizen-science approach of the BMDVFootnote1- project ESSEM implements a triangulating approach that uses biological markers and standardized questionnaires to make statements about individual ‘stress’. In the future, this should help identify vulnerable groups and better address them in project development and planning. The presented study describes the use of participatory methods based on three ‘stress hotspots’ in Osnabrück, taking into account different forms of cycling infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":90388,"journal":{"name":"Urban, planning and transport research","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135141546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
