Sometimes applying a known solution is sufficient: an otherwise healthy patient who presents with a routine bacterial infection should be prescribed antibiotics. At other times, the solution for a non-routine patient will require the clinician to innovate: a homeless, depressed patient with the same bacterial infection may require more than just a prescription for antibiotics. In both cases, the eventual solution becomes part of the clinician’s experience and evolving understanding of her or his clinical domain. When we say ‘adaptive expertise’, we encompass this entire situated, iterative and sometimes generative activity of clinical reasoning.","PeriodicalId":90259,"journal":{"name":"Medical education (Chicago, Ill.)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/medu.13247","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48386687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, when we say . . . leadership, we must also say. . . followership, but why is it that we fixate on one and neglect the other? A possible reason why is the mere fact that leadership occurs first. However, as McKimm and O’Sullivan state and I concur, leadership is a process that is sustained and recognised only if followership also happens.","PeriodicalId":90259,"journal":{"name":"Medical education (Chicago, Ill.)","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1111/medu.13228","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45300091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
