It is likely that individuals with PTSD will seek treatment for their physical health problems at primary care clinics, making primary care offices de facto mental health care settings. Integrated behavioral health care is a unification between mental health services and medical services with the intention of providing a patient with holistic treatment. Integrated care can provide the opportunity to detect PTSD in patients and provide trauma-informed mental health care. Evidence-based stabilization techniques are greatly needed in integrated care settings where trauma-related mental disorders are highly prevalent. The purpose of this article is to review integrated care, highlight the effects of trauma, and provide trauma-informed techniques to treat the mental health consequences of trauma in an integrated care setting.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90412470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors examined adverse childhood experiences and their association with perfectionism and perceived stress in a sample of 481 university students. Latent profile analysis based on measures of perfectionism supported a three-class model made up of adaptive perfectionists, maladaptive perfectionists, and non-perfectionists. Discriminant analysis suggested childhood abuse and neglect are important predictors of perfectionism profile membership. Lastly, among these groups, the authors found significant differences in perceived stress, with adaptive perfectionists reporting the lowest level of perceived stress, followed by non-perfectionists and maladaptive perfectionists. Implications for mental health counselors and future research are provided.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75413053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study examines gender differences in mental health-related outcomes and their relationship to mental illness diagnoses, psychological service utilization, help-seeking attitudes, and overall health among students attending universities in the United States. A survey of 1,034 college students indicated psychological health significantly varied by gender such that mental health-related outcomes, mental illness diagnoses, and psychological service utilization were worse for TGNC individuals than for cisgender women or men. These healthcare outcomes were also reported to be worse for cisgender women than for cisgender men, except for resilience, loneliness, and overall health, for which TGNC participants reported worse outcomes, but cisgender men and women did not differ. Implications for mental health counselors and recommendations for future research are provided.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75550359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

EDs impact culturally diverse populations. Limits to current research and clinical practice are examined, which include the misguided presumption that EDs predominantly impact primarily young, White, female clients. This article explores the manifestation of EDs and disordered eating symptoms among men, while noting the systemic underrepresentation of men in ED research. Implications of this review highlight the need for evidence-based care for men and boys with EDs and the role of cultural adaptation frameworks in developing an evidence-based dialectical behavior therapy intervention for male clients with bulimia nervosa.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"439 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76329338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A 13-item electronic survey was utilized to measure participant use of and satisfaction with teletherapy. The frequency of symptoms assessed was consistently higher during the COVID-19 time frame than pre-COVID-19. Most respondents indicated that their symptoms worsened or new symptoms arose during the COVID-19 time frame. Additionally, 39.6% of respondents indicated an increase in teletherapy use. A significant model was found that predicted a collective effect for satisfaction with teletherapy counseling. Reported increases in symptomology additionally indicated a greater need for accessible care during the pandemic. This study’s findings support a continuation of teletherapy use in response to the COVID-19 pandemic due to reported increases in use of and satisfaction with teletherapy services.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"39 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85364699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although contemporary standards for the profession emphasize the need for greater attention to systemic influences on clients’ lives, enacting frameworks such as the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (MSJCC) proposed by Ratts et al. without a complementary theoretical framework can be challenging for mental health counselors. Relational-cultural theory (RCT) offers such a framework to support counselors’ efforts to serve marginalized clients, as well as understand their own oppressed identities in the counseling room. Following an overview of RCT, the authors describe practical guidelines for enacting the MSJCC through RCT in clinical practice. A case study is provided to illustrate a workable application for mental health counselors.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"15 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81790981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing eye-movement-based interventions, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, use eye movements to access subconscious content and reduce the intensity of associated affect. This article presents information on the neuroanatomy of the eyes, including that the retinas are entirely made of brain tissue. The article then examines the literature on the eyes and their relationship to the nervous system, emotion regulation, emotion suppression, psychopathology, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, and it explores interventions that use eye movements and contraindications of their use. It also provides resulting helpful tips about all these subjects for counselors to incorporate into their daily practice, and it indicates where further research is needed.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"44 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79126987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Counselors and their clients are vulnerable to these threats any time they share data online with each other, with third-party payers, and with allied health professionals. In fact, any private information stored digitally is potentially at risk for exploitation or theft. This current environment highlights the need for an intentional process and approach that can help mental health counselors understand their digital assets and vulnerabilities in order to anticipate and protect against potential cyber threats. This type of process can be facilitated through the application of cyber intelligence and cybersecurity principles to online counseling services in order to address ethical and legal obligations of counselors and to assuage client fears about potential privacy breaches. When counselors keep client data safe, Health Information Portability and Accountability Act and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act violations are less likely to occur in a variety of settings where clients may be seen. An overview of the need for cybersecurity, a framework for bolstering cybersecurity, and specific guidelines for counselors are provided.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84912698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the Global Wellness literature is lacking research among ethnic minority populations who tend to face healthcare inequities. For example, Black and Latinx adults in the U.S. face inequities in the quality and accessibility of mental and physical healthcare services, including unique risks for anxiety and depression. In this study, a national random sample, (<i>N</i> = 4,009) was recruited (stratified by age, gender, and geographic region of the U.S.) of Latinx and Black adults to examine the association between Anxiety Severity and Depression Severity with Global Wellness as well as demographic differences in Global Wellness. Anxiety and depression emerged as significant negative predictors of Global Wellness and results revealed a number of demographic differences in Global Wellness. We analyzed the recovery curves of 267 students with severe mental health symptoms in a collegiate IPBH program using ex post facto design and growth curve modeling. Students fit into three subgroups according with type of services received: (1) counseling only; (2) counseling and primary care; and (3) counseling, primary care, and psychiatric care. Results showed all treatment groups demonstrated positive growth trajectories. The outcome of this study is discussed in relationship with existing literature. Implications for future collegiate IPBH research and clinical practice for counselors, primary care staff, and psychiatrists are presented.","PeriodicalId":90224,"journal":{"name":"Journal of mental health counseling","volume":"223 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76678492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
