This study aims to find out the physical and psychological problems among elderly people and to determine the factors associated with the problems. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out among 46 elderly people who were residents at the Aged Care Center in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Elderly aged 60-years and above were selected purposefully for the study. Physical disability, geriatric depression, cognitive impairment was assessed using the Barthel index, Geriatric depression scale, Elderly Cognitive Assessment Questionnaire respectively. The association between sociodemographic data and physical disability, depression and cognitive impairment were also evaluated by using bivariate analysis. Results: The mean age of the respondents was 73.3 ± 7.41 years and among them 52% were females. Among the participants, the prevalence of physical disabilities was 17.39% and the commonest problem was climbing the stairs. The Prevalence of cognitive impairment was 13.04% and the commonest impairment was found in memory recall. The Prevalence of geriatric depression was 32.6%. The prevalence of depression and cognitive impairment were higher among unmarried, illiterate and unemployed respondents. Overall physical and psychological impairment was higher in the age group 80 to 89 years and also in females. Conclusion: Increasing age, particularly those who belonged to age group 80-89 years were at significant risk for physical disability, depression and cognitive impairment.","PeriodicalId":90221,"journal":{"name":"Journal of gerontology & geriatric research","volume":"66 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89165889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: The study aimed to examine the factors determining QOL of Nepali elderly in rural Nepal. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study carried out in 2017 in Kailali district, far west province of Nepal. Total sample size for this study was 547. World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref (WHOQOL-Bref) instruments were used to assess elderly people’s quality of life. Results: This study exhibited that physical health problem of elderly people play vital role in determining their QOL. There is strong negative relationship (-0.505) between physical health problem and overall QOL index of elderly people which indicates reducing physical health problem of elderly leading to significant improvement in their QOL. Physical health problem independently contribute 24.6 percent towards overall QOL as well as contribution with other variables like stress in life and involvement in social activities contribute 36.7 percent. Conclusion: It implies policy implication of giving equal attention in strengthening our health and health care system to care physical and psychological health care needs of elderly people.","PeriodicalId":90221,"journal":{"name":"Journal of gerontology & geriatric research","volume":"20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87677231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also unclear to what extent general health issues play a role regarding this group of persons when it comes to maintaining good oral health and regular dental visits. Furthermore, much is unclear about the type and amount of care dentists offer to these people, which treatment strategies they apply, and whether they experience any barriers. These uncertainties have led to a study into the need for care of community-dwelling older people in general dental practices in the Netherlands as well as into the actual care dentists provide to this group of citizens.Materials and methods: This exploratory cross-sectional study will focus on the oral health of older people in the Netherlands who still visit the general dental practice on a regular basis. Additionally, an inventory will be made of their needs for oral health care and the care, which is subsequently provided by dentists based on these needs. This study is based on two groups of older people: persons aged 75 and older and persons between the age of 60 and 64. The study is carried out by conducting a sample survey among general dental practitioners in the Netherlands. They will be asked to prospectively select and describe one older patient and to ask this patient to complete a short questionnaire.Results and Discussion: The insights that will be gained through this study can be used to optimize the organization and quality of oral health care that dental practices provide to community dwelling (frail) older people. It is also expected that this study will identify knowledge gaps with regard to oral health care to older people in general dental practice.","PeriodicalId":90221,"journal":{"name":"Journal of gerontology & geriatric research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2167-7182.1000498","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70829254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But research on aging have seldom considered the plight of marginalized groups nor tried to quantify the overall wellbeing of aged among tribal community in India. On this perspective this paper tries to explore the data available on tribal elderly population in an attempt to quantify the active ageing process of the tribal elderly population in India. Scheduled tribes in India have a lesser proportion of aged with 6.9% of the population above 60 years compared to 8.6 among the general population in India. Employing McGahan composite index normalization the composite indices is estimated. The health index values indicate that only one in ten elderly have good health. Community participation index depicts a better scenario with more elderly being scored under the ‘moderate’ and ‘good’ participation index. Distribution of elderly population by security index shows that ‘good’ security index values are observed among the medium wealth quintile category of elderly. Overall the Scheduled Tribe population in India shows a moderate level of active ageing. Females are slightly at disadvantage in the overall active ageing index. Welfare of the tribal elderly population demands attention in par with the general population in promoting active ageing among the tribal elderly population in India. A holistic approach encompassing health, social, economic and psychological aspects could be promoted with strong government support for the active and healthy ageing of the tribal population in India.","PeriodicalId":90221,"journal":{"name":"Journal of gerontology & geriatric research","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.4172/2167-7182.1000495","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70828632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
