Objective: The main objective of the study is to find the effects of type 2 diabetes Type 2 diabetes and its impact on the risk of developing ARDS in patients with lung cancer postoperatively and its prognosis. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at CMH Lahore from 2021 to 2022. Data were collected from 320 patients diagnosed with lung cancer. Patients diagnosed with lung cancer who underwent surgery were included in the study. Patients with a history of any other malignancies and suffering from COPD were excluded from the study. Electronic medical records were reviewed to collect demographic information, including age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking history, comorbidities (including T2DM), tumour characteristics, surgical procedures performed, and postoperative outcomes. Results: Data were collected from 320 diagnosed patients with lung cancer according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The mean age of the patients was 58.98±5.67 years. There were 60% male and 40% female patients. The prevalence of T2DM was 25%, and 50% followed the lobectomy surgical procedure. 40% of the patients were from stage I, 30% from stage II, 20% from stage III and 10% at stage IV. Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 Second (FEV1) had a mean value of 2.5 litres with a standard deviation of 0.8 litres. Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) showed a mean of 3.0 litres with a standard deviation of 1.0. The FEV1/FVC ratio was approximately 0.83, with a standard deviation of 0.05. Total Lung Capacity (TLC) exhibited a mean value of 5.0 litres with a standard deviation of 1.2 litres. Residual Volume (RV) had a mean of 1.2 litres with a standard deviation of 0.4. Conclusion: It is concluded that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with a higher incidence of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in lung cancer surgery. T2DM independently predicts lesser prognosis and survival outcomes in patients who develop ARDS postoperatively.","PeriodicalId":9008,"journal":{"name":"Biological and Clinical Sciences Research Journal","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141234701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of the study is to find the use of antibiotics and the farmers' awareness level of antibiotic resistance in broiler farms. This study is designed to investigate antibiotic usage practices and assess the awareness levels of broiler farmers regarding antibiotic resistance. A total of 280 participants from various broiler farms across the region were recruited from February 2023 to August 2023. Eligible participants included farm owners, managers, and workers directly involved in broiler farming activities. Data were collected from 280 participants through a designed survey. The study revealed a predominance of medium-sized farms, housing between 5,000 to 20,000 broilers, accounting for 60% of participants, followed by large farms with over 20,000 broilers at 25%. Basic biosecurity protocols were the most commonly implemented management practice among participants, reported by 50% of respondents, while 35% reported moderate implementation, and 15% reported advanced biosecurity measures. Tetracycline emerged as the most commonly used antibiotic (45%), often administered orally (60%) for disease prevention (40%). Enrofloxacin (30%) and Amoxicillin (25%) were also prevalent, with oral administration being the preferred route. Despite the predominance of seeking veterinary advice (70%), a notable proportion reported self-medication (20%) or seeking advice from fellow farmers (10%). It is concluded that antibiotic usage remains prevalent in commercial poultry farming, with tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and beta-lactams being commonly employed. While seeking veterinary advice predominates, there's a need to address gaps in access to veterinary services and promote responsible antibiotic stewardship among farmers.","PeriodicalId":9008,"journal":{"name":"Biological and Clinical Sciences Research Journal","volume":"22 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141111388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the influence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) clearance on metabolic and renal parameters in these patients remains underexplored. Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of HCV clearance on the metabolic and renal system of chronic hepatitis C patients treated with direct antiviral agents. Methods: A prospective study was conducted at the Department of Medicine, Shifa Hospital, Islamabad, from January 2022 to January 2024. A total of 323 patients with chronic hepatitis C treated with DAAs were included. Hepatic and renal function tests were recorded before treatment, post-treatment, and 6-month follow-up. Insulin resistance (IR) and B-cell function were evaluated using the homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). All patients received DAAs treatment, with or without ribavirin. Statistical analysis was performed using appropriate methods. Results: Following HCV clearance, both groups exhibited a significant decrease in fasting glucose and insulin levels and improvements in HOMA-IR values. Additionally, decreased creatinine levels and increased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) indicated enhanced renal function. Sustained virologic response (SVR) emerged as an independent predictor of improvement in GFR and HOMA-IR. Conclusion: HCV clearance in chronic hepatitis C infection, achieved through treatment with direct antiviral agents, leads to notable improvements in renal and metabolic parameters. These findings underscore the importance of achieving SVR in managing chronic hepatitis C.","PeriodicalId":9008,"journal":{"name":"Biological and Clinical Sciences Research Journal","volume":"35 35","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141117484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address these challenges, various strategies can be employed to develop future crops that are more productive, nutritious, and resilient. One strategy is to improve the yield potential of existing crops by developing new high-yielding cultivars. This can be achieved through the development of new varieties that can produce more grain under optimal conditions. Additionally, improving the nutritional quality of crops is important to address nutrient deficiencies. Synthetic biology and metabolic engineering methods can be used to develop crops with enhanced nutritional value. Efficient utilization of agricultural resources is another important aspect of crop improvement. This includes developing crops that use water and nutrients more efficiently, reducing the need for irrigation and fertilizers, and minimizing environmental impacts. Increasing the resistance of crops to pests, diseases, and extreme weather events can also help reduce the use of pesticides and minimize crop losses. The domestication of wild or semi-wild plants through genetic manipulation offers new opportunities for crop design. These plants may have high nutritional value, stress tolerance, and specialized metabolites that can be incorporated into cultivated crops. Similarly, the domestication of orphan or neglected plants can contribute to crop improvement by incorporating unique traits. Genetic improvement through the transfer of genes from wild relatives or other species can also enhance crop productivity. Advancements in genomics and genetic technologies can aid in the identification and transfer of beneficial alleles. Agronomic improvements, such as maximizing the effectiveness of crop protection agents and fertilizers while minimizing their environmental impact, can also contribute to crop performance. The emerging field of synthetic biology offers opportunities for developing novel biological devices and systems that can further enhance crop productivity and resilience. Overall, these strategies can help address the challenges faced by the global food production system.","PeriodicalId":9008,"journal":{"name":"Biological and Clinical Sciences Research Journal","volume":"123 13","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141123806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Swift changes in climate conditions directly diminish wheat yields and adversely influence key grain constituents such as starch, fibre, protein, amino acids, and essential nutrients. The studies were conducted for six years, from 2017-18 to 2022-23, to understand the impact of changing climate on wheat grain composition and quality. The results indicated that November is the best month for sowing wheat. The post-anthesis drought or less water availability helps the plants accumulate more protein and gluten contents, and starch contents decrease. The quality of the grain, however, is more significantly influenced by the variety of wheat, the type of environmental stress, and the duration and severity of exposure. Faisalabad 08 had the highest protein and gluten contents, while Galaxy 13 had the highest starch contents in D2. Growing of open-pollinated maize varieties (OPVs) is a traditional trend and is still followed by a huge community of small farmers in most of the developing world. Improvement in yield potential is always inevitable and requires a purposeful and definite strategy. The current climate scenario loaded with heat escalation and extreme fluctuations is creating uncertainty and unsustainability through acute yield losses in domesticated crops. The breeding strategy of Sahiwal Gold (2008-2018) was comprised of four developmental phases i.e. enrichment phase, half-sib selection, pedigree selection, uniformity phase, and field evaluation at various agro-ecological zones of Pakistan. Each consecutive autumn and spring season was utilized to improve yield potential by exploiting pre and post-vegetative heat resilience. Half sib and pedigree selection improved plant features like height (12%), cob length (4.1%), seeds per cob (7.5%), grain (10%), and stalk yield (11.2%) from enrichment to uniformity phase. Sahiwal Gold maintained a high adaption profile across the tested locations and out-yielded the check variety (MMRI Yellow) by 18% and 26% on average in 6 stations and 16 national yield trials, respectively. National yield testing approved its suitability across provinces like Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), and Islamabad territory under a diverse range of temperatures. Analysis of variance revealed that highly significant interaction between season and genotypes work for plant height, grain, and stalk yield potential. Higher grain yield up to 95 mounds/acre was observed for spring season crop and batter stalk yield results (650 mounds/acre) were assessed during autumn plantation. Twelve (12) feet tall plants with 4 feet long leaves having 75-90% stay green ability provide a good opportunity fodder and grain yield potential at farmer’s field. This work will provide a better understanding to researchers for designing breeding programs for the development of heat resilience germplasm in crops.","PeriodicalId":9008,"journal":{"name":"Biological and Clinical Sciences Research Journal","volume":" 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141129758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both groups exhibited a significant improvement in LVEF post-surgery (p = 0.05), with comparable in-hospital mortality rates recorded. The study identified DM, significant diastolic dysfunction, and intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) insertion as predictors of in-hospital mortality (p = 0.001, 0.03, and < 0.001, respectively). These findings suggest a noticeable enhancement in LV systolic function post-CABG, contributing to improved survival rates.
