The focus is on the functional and dysfunctional influences of the patient’s social support dynamics on his risk behavior during mandatory policlinic treatment. A structured Forensic Social Network Analysis interview was conducted with the patient and two of his network members at four time points in his treatment process. The patient’s social supporters, their structural network position, and their risk are pooled and labeled through a triad census method. The number of practical and emotional supporters decreased over time in the network of the patient, which also resulted in a decrease of high-risk practical and emotional supporters. The size and composition of financial support in the network of the patient remained almost stable. Monitoring and analyzing social support using the triad census method provides valuable insights for individual risk management purposes.","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"113 1","pages":"114 - 137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2015.1007779","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59840116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Past research has shown age and intelligence are important risk factors for incompetence, but investigations of particular aspects of cognition and more practical aspects of functioning are limited. The present study investigated the direct and indirect effects of age, adaptive functioning, and three specific cognitive abilities (working memory, attention, and processing speed) on both types of competence for 92 children and adolescents ages 8–16. While age was strongly related to all aspects of both types of competence, mixed results were found for the cognitive abilities, and adaptive functioning was only related to some aspects of CWM. Contrary to expectations, it was found that, for the most part, the effect cognitive abilities had on competence did not vary depending on the age of the child or adolescent, and that higher adaptive functioning did not serve as a protective factor for competence when cognitive functioning was low.","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"15 1","pages":"138 - 159"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2015.1009803","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59840129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes the development, content, and structure of a family psychoeducation program piloted within a low secure forensic mental health setting. Additionally, the feasibility, acceptability, and resource implications are evaluated. The evaluation is descriptive in nature and based on broad feedback gathered from the five families and individuals directly involved, in addition to the views from the wider clinical team about the usefulness of the program. The intervention was well received by families and staff. Overall, the results suggest that family-based interventions in low secure settings can be developed from existing treatment being used in generic and forensic mental health settings. Research is now needed to assess the impact of the Family Psycho-Education Programme for Low Secure Settings (F-PEPSS) intervention on participants.","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"15 1","pages":"171 - 183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2015.1013786","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59840181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four focus groups and three in-depth individual interviews were conducted with 23 colored adolescent males between the ages of 16 and 18 years residing in gang-prevalent areas in the Western Cape, South Africa. Attraction to gangs was indicated in terms of external factors, including material gain, entertainment, substance availability, dominance, and survival, as well as internal factors of acceptance and belonging, esteem, and loyalty. Personal factors such as ambition/aspiration, identity, responsibility, and morals emerged as factors discouraging participants from gang involvement, as did relational factors including respect for others, family values, positive relationships, and reputation. Furthermore, fears of danger and its consequences, avoidance of unpleasant psychological experiences and loss, and perceived purposelessness were highlighted as significant factors at play in participants’ decisions against gang involvement. If these findings can be acknowledged and attended to by various systems involved in youth development, greater preventative support may be provided for youth at risk.","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"15 1","pages":"1 - 32"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2015.977137","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59841008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the current study, a research agenda was established with in-depth input from 13 forensic interviewers. Interviewers indicated which techniques they use most often, rated the usefulness of various interview techniques, and disclosed common challenges when interviewing. Although many recommended techniques were used (e.g., the Cognitive Interview and Rapport Building), some techniques shown to be effective in eliciting quality testimony in scientific studies were not always used or considered useful by front-line interviewers (e.g., permission to correct the interviewer, permission to say, “I don’t know”). Key areas were identified to guide future research (e.g., techniques when interviewing very young children, witnesses with developmental delays).","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"15 1","pages":"33 - 57"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2015.997611","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59840596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conundrum is that of balancing appropriate disclosure with the potential for undue bias on the part of the respondent. Although aspirational in nature, there are substantial limitations and a problematic lack of guidance in the provisions of the Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychology. Informal feedback from practicing psychologists with experience in this area was elicited with regard to their approach to disclosure. Responses varied and were seemingly dependent upon their professional experience. A review of the relevant literature and directions for future research are discussed with an emphasis on suggestions for practice. The authors suggest that prioritization and open dialogue can serve to appropriately direct professional practice toward an appropriate balancing of goals.","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"15 1","pages":"80 - 91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2015.997419","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59841021","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first is a lack of coherency in the field which has, as a consequence, led to increasingly discordant and contradictory theorems. In many respects this problem is connotative of the adage comparing apples with oranges. Likewise, the adage the elephant in the room describes the second major shortfall concerning a paucity of research testing the validity (i.e., accuracy) of espoused paradigms. Finally, the adage too many cooks spoil the broth describes the third major shortfall concerning the counterproductive popular interest surrounding the topic. These shortfalls when examined collectively appear to form a self-perpetuating cycle. The use of violent crime databases such as ViCAP and ViCLAS are suggested as potential mechanisms in arresting this cycle by rectifying these factors, which continue to stymie the cogent scientific development of criminal profiling.","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"15 1","pages":"58 - 79"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2014.986706","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59840401","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to explore the mediating effects of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms on the relationship between child age and narrative characteristics in the allegations of child sexual abuse. Some characteristics of traumatic narratives were analyzed in a group of 58 victims of sexual abuse (M = 10; SD = 3.5 years), including 29 children (50%) with all the symptoms of PTSD. Results were consistent with a model of PTSD symptoms as a mediator of the relationship between age and sensory impressions, emotional nodes, and cognitive distancing.","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"14 1","pages":"355 - 382"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2014.970423","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59840341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results from the study do not support the model proposed by Millon and suggest the MACI may not yield valid or reliable scores in forensic populations of adolescent, African American males. Participants were 179 adults detained in a medium-secure prison, all of whom completed a battery of questionnaire measures and self-reported their actual prison behavior. The results support the application of the model to this population, suggesting that emotional cascades (measured in terms of rumination) may play an important role in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidality in adult male offenders, although this needs further exploration. These findings highlight the benefits of targeting rumination to manage risk of NSSI and suicidality within custodial settings.","PeriodicalId":89973,"journal":{"name":"Journal of forensic psychology practice","volume":"14 1","pages":"398 - 417"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/15228932.2014.962379","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59840234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
