The current study was intended to capture college students’ voices about culture. Three focus groups were conducted with undergraduate college students on issues related to culture. The findings were organized based on the developmental model of intercultural sensitivity. These findings suggest that college students generally lack a deep understanding of their own cultures, as well as other cultures. The findings of this study provide guidance for the development of more effective strategies to increase cultural competency in college students.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"22 1","pages":"98 - 113"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587X.2021.1898980","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45715959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using various narrative frameworks developed in the medical and career development disciplines, the author makes the case that narrative approaches can be applied to higher education and student affairs contexts. The use and misuse of technology can serve as a barrier when it disrupts the interactions and objectives between educator and student. An overview of narrative competencies—a collection of skills that educators can use with students—is provided in an attempt to more fully listen and honor students’ voices. Students can learn to develop “authoring” and “re-authoring” skills to highlight competencies they developed during times of crisis and transition. Two students’ stories of how they negotiated a harrowing study abroad experience during the beginning of Covid-19 are shared. The author highlights several examples of narrative-based curriculum and encourages student affairs educators to integrate narrative models into existing and new training programs.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"22 1","pages":"171 - 178"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587X.2021.1898985","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41797283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Long-standing assumptions about the effectiveness of the “pipeline theory”—that as greater numbers of women assume entry-level positions in the career pipeline, they will naturally move gradually toward higher leadership roles—have proven largely to be unfounded. Hence fresh strategies are needed that address the reasons that women are often hesitant or unwilling to pursue or assume top-level leadership roles. This article briefly reviews the leadership literature, which has been predominantly male-normed, and offers a response to the challenge issued in the literature that new and nuanced approaches to preparing the next generation of leaders must be envisioned and implemented if the unsatisfactory status quo is to be addressed. Viewing leadership as a platform for purposeful influence is linked to four aspects of spirituality that may be constructive in terms of enhancing women’s leadership aspirations while also providing support on their leadership journeys: (a) leadership to advance a meaningful purpose, (b) leadership as a response to a sense of calling, (c) leadership from the perspective of to “stewarding” gifts and strengths, and (d) leadership that honors relational responsibility.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"22 1","pages":"87 - 97"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587X.2021.1898983","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46150329","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most research has not focused on how different student groups provide different environments and support that impact students’ experience. This ethnography focuses on one Christian student organization to explore how students draw boundaries around intersecting identities and how they affect students’ experience within the organization. The findings suggest that although the organization expressed intentions of welcoming diverse Christian students, they were unaware and unequipped to interact with diverse students. This study highlights the need for further research to differentiate how different groups offer students a different experience and function as systems of oppression. Additionally, this study shows the importance of institutions in equipping students and student groups to prepare them to interact and include diverse populations. Although student groups may be beneficial, it is crucial to consider which students feel the most welcomed to reap the benefits.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"22 1","pages":"73 - 80"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587X.2020.1860780","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48995052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Building on the work of others, the authors adopted an interdisciplinary, equity-oriented approach to developing the theory, which also serves as the basis for a framework intended to guide and inform interfaith practice. Development occurs through exposure to and participation in college experiences that help students achieve outcomes related to religious, spiritual, and worldview development. Outcomes specific to interfaith learning and development include pluralism, self-authored worldview commitment, appreciative knowledge of religious and non-religious traditions, and appreciative attitudes toward religious and non-religious narratives.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"22 1","pages":"1 - 12"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587X.2020.1860778","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49117420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Issues of human rights, free speech, and college and university policy converge with remarkable contention, leaving many higher education professionals believing they do not have the knowledge and skill to facilitate civil discourse. On some occasions when dialogue is broached, parties hold fast to their positions staunchly without care or empathy for the other’s perspective or lived experiences. This environment can perpetuate even deeper divides. This article will review how to cultivate a culture of care to set thoughtful expectations of all campus stakeholders, provide a foundation for empathy and compassion from which to hold meaningful conversation, and explore the notion that a both/and approach to difficult conversations can be far more useful than an either/or method of discourse.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"22 1","pages":"81 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587X.2020.1860777","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43437827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, the authors present a novel case of social media activism in which students occupied an official university hashtag to raise awareness of racism on campus (i.e., an online occupation). The authors examined 776 tweets posted after a fatal hate crime to understand how student activists organized the occupation of the institutional hashtag and how students, faculty, alumni, and the media participated in the movement. Findings shed light on the potential disruptive power of social media activism.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"22 1","pages":"13 - 30"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587X.2020.1860775","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"60506887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although college is a place where young adults encounter diversity, little is known about students’ attitudes toward interfaith dating. Thirty-seven students were divided into five focus group sessions and asked to describe their views, experiences, and apprehensions about interfaith relationships. Key factors influencing students’ attitudes were parental disapproval, religiosity, and Christian privilege. Based on our findings, we provide college educators with recommendations for programs and activities that foster interfaith dialogue and religious literacy among students.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"22 1","pages":"31 - 45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587X.2020.1860776","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42599209","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study we sought to discover whether there are patterns of advocacy and to identify patterns so that advocates and activists might broaden their skills to increase effectiveness. Through engaging with 26 participants and using a conceptual framework of archetypes, findings revealed patterns of advocacy to be warm hearts, risk takers, liberators, path makers, rescuers, tempered radicals, and 9–5ers across faculty, staff, and students.
