The study uses the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS) and the Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity Scale (M-GUDS) to understand changes in socially responsible leadership and orientation toward diversity. Using the quasi-experimental design of inverse treatment probability weighting with doubly robust estimation, the analyses indicate that arts attendance in the first year of college has a positive dosage effect on student-rated importance of social and political involvement, increases the SRLS score of those attending arts events very often, and improves students’ M-GUDS score among those attending often. Finally, arts attendance at any level has a positive influence on students’ interest in participating in diverse social and cultural activities. We provide additional analyses concerning SRLS and M-GUDS sub-scales.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"21 1","pages":"263 - 280"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587x.2020.1822876","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47121131","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address this gap, we undertook a phenomenological examination of the experiences of second-year graduate students in four elite master of education programs with respect to these identities. We found that both secularists and devout religious believers experienced a marginalization that chilled discussions about these identities and their willingness to share their own identities. Their view that other students and professors did not perceive spiritual, secular, or religious identity development as important amplified their fear and sense of marginalization.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"21 1","pages":"281 - 300"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587x.2020.1822877","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45865357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among its other functions, it expands or constrains opportunities for the exploration and commitment processes of identity development across domains (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, first-generation student status). It is unlikely that educators can intervene to radically change peer culture, but they can understand how to engage with formal and informal peer cultures to facilitate positive outcomes and minimize negative ones.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"21 1","pages":"237 - 243"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587x.2020.1822879","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47056076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among the groups that have not been sufficiently studied are multiracial students and graduate students, with considerable less understanding of students who live at the intersection of these two demographic groups. The unique issues facing multiracial graduate students and ways to address their needs should be a prominent topic of conversation among scholars and colleagues in today’s higher education research and institutions.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"21 1","pages":"323 - 328"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587x.2020.1822881","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44052194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to a general lack of knowledge surrounding the field’s formation, NASPA worked to create the book Reflecting Back, Looking Forward: Civil Rights and Student Affairs. This article highlights the role of student affairs officers during challenging times, revisits the content of that text, and reviews the current landscape of student affairs. Three common themes emerge regarding 21st century: student demographics, student activism, and college completion. Previous research has shown the negative influence of perceived hostile campus cultures on students’ overall learning and development. This study investigated bachelor’s degree-seeking students’ religious and spiritual discrimination experiences. With particular attention paid to students’ self-identified religious/spiritual identities, the study found that students who identify with a non-Christian, world faith tradition more frequently experienced discriminatory acts than their Christian peers. Additionally, the results show that more respect for others’ spirituality beliefs on campus was negatively correlated with experiencing acts of religious intolerance. In contrast, increased comfort in expressing religious and spiritual beliefs on campus was positively related to more frequent incidents of religious intolerance.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"21 1","pages":"244 - 262"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587x.2020.1822875","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45413091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article argues that more research and theorizing are required to make the construct relevant to living and learning communities, students, and institutions beyond the United States. Four pointers are discussed to expand and deepen the construct and to improve resonance across the world. The recommendations include moving beyond institution-centric forms of engagement and considering life-wide engagement, reviewing reductionistic indicators that rely on binaries of race and politics, and considering oppositional and challenging forms of being as a form of student engagement.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"21 1","pages":"315 - 322"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587x.2020.1822878","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47416968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Qualitative analysis of post-intervention focus groups with students yielded six salient themes: (a) a new experience, (b) a new way to interact, (c) a new kind of relationship, (d) a new kind of inclusion, (e) a new sense of community, and (f) a new understanding. Findings show that liberal/leftist political ideologies, financing college through on-campus work and loans, and participation in racial/ethnic organizations in college positively predict student support for raising taxes on the wealthy. Right-wing ideologies, working off-campus, having parental financial support, and playing intercollegiate sports are noteworthy negative predictors. Implications for higher education administrators and the political discourse are discussed.","PeriodicalId":89967,"journal":{"name":"Journal of college and character","volume":"21 1","pages":"171 - 185"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/2194587x.2020.1781658","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45732805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
