Clinical phenotypes can vary widely among both etiologies, including Fuchs uveitis syndrome (FUS) as a very distinct phenotype that has been associated with both RV and CMV. The Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) Working Group recently updated the classification criteria for FUS as unilateral AU, including either heterochromia or diffuse iris atrophy combined with stellate keratic precipitates as key findings. The aim of this study was to determine whether our patients adhere to the classification criteria of FUS as previously reported and whether RV- or CMV-associated uveitis can be differentiated by clinical findings. Therefore, this study investigated the clinical characteristics of patients with AU and intraocular presence of either RV or CMV determined by the Goldmann-Witmer coefficient (GWC). Our study included 100 patients (107 eyes) with AU and positive GWC for RV (86) and CMV (21). Clinical findings of RV-positive eyes were as follows: keratic precipitates (91.9%) with a predominantly diffuse distribution (81.4%), unilateral cataract (80.2%), pseudophakia (73.5%), and vitreous cells (59.7%), whereas heterochromia was present in only 39.5% of eyes and iris atrophy in 12.9% of eyes. In CMV-positive eyes, conversely, a higher incidence of ocular hypertension with markedly increased intraocular pressures above 30 mmHg (66.7%), keratic precipitates (81.0%), which were most commonly distributed in the center of the cornea (63.6%), an unaffected lens (55.0%), absent iris atrophy (100%), and absent posterior synechiae (90.5%) could be detected. This indicates a clinical presentation that was mainly compatible with Posner-Schlossman syndrome. In our cohort of RV-positive FUS patients, we saw a different cluster of clinical findings compared to the classification criteria suggested by the SUN Working Group. The main criteria, such as unilaterality, were mostly fulfilled. When applying all classification criteria, only 8.4% of 107 eyes and 10.5% of all 86 RV-positive eyes would qualify for the diagnosis of FUS. In addition, in our cohort of predominantly Caucasian patients, the clinical findings in patients with proven CMV infection differed from the clinical presentation typically associated with FUS.

Long-chain mid-chain diol (shortly diol) based proxies obtain increasing interest to reconstruct past upper ocean temperature and productivity. Here we evaluate performance of the sea surface temperature proxies; long chain diol index (LDI), the diol saturation index (DSI) and the diol chain-length index (DCI), productivity/upwelling intensity proxies: the two diol indices DIR (Rampen et al., 2008) and DIW (Willmott et al., 2010) and the combined diol index (CDI), as well as the nutrient diol index (NDI) as proxy for phosphate and nitrate levels. This evaluation is based on comparison of the diols in sediment trap samples from the upwelling region off NW Africa collected at 1.28 km water depth with daily satellite derived sea surface temperatures (SSTSAT), subsurface temperatures, productivity, the plankton composition from the trap location, monthly PO43− and NO3− concentrations, wind speed and wind direction from the nearby Nouadhibou airport. The diol based SST reconstructions are also compared the long chain alkenones based UK’37 proxy reconstructions (SSTUK). At the trap site, most diol proxies lag wind speed (phase φ = 30 days) and can be related to upwelling. Correlation with the abundance of upwelling species and wind speed is best for the DCI, DSI and NDI whereas the DI and CDI perform comparatively poorly. The nutrient proxy NDI shows no significant correlation to monthly PO43− and NO3− concentrations in the upper waters and a negative correlation with wind-induced upwelling (r2 = 0.28, φ = 32 days) as well as the abundance of upwelling species (r2 = 0.38; Table 4). It is suggested that this proxy reflects upwelling intensity rather than upper ocean nutrient concentrations. At the trap site, SSTSAT lags wind speed forced upwelling by about 4 months (φ = 129 d). The LDI based SST (SSTLDI) correlate poorly (r2 = 0.17) to SSTSAT which we attribute to variability in 1,13 diol abundance unrelated to SST such as productivity. The SSTUK correlates best with SSTSAT (r2 = 0.60). Despite a long history of research, there is almost no information regarding the major biogeochemical fluxes that could characterize the past and present state of the European Lake Onego ecosystem and be used for reliable prognostic estimates of its future. To enable such capacity, we adapted and implemented a three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamical biogeochemical model of the nutrient cycles in Lake Onego. The model was used to reconstruct three decades of Lake Onego ecosystem dynamics with daily resolution on a 2 × 2 km grid. A comparison of available information from Lake Onego and other large boreal lakes proves that this hindcast is plausible enough to be used as a form of reanalysis. As new regional phenological knowledge, the reanalysis quantifies that the spring phytoplankton bloom, previously overlooked, reaches a maximum of 500 ± 128 mg C m−2 d−1 in May, contributes to approximately half of the lake’s annual primary production of 17.0–20.6 g C m−2 yr−1, and is triggered by increasing light availability rather than by an insignificant rise in water temperature. Coherent nutrient budgets provide reliable estimates of phosphorus and nitrogen residence times of 47 and 17 years, respectively. The shorter nitrogen residence time is explained by sediment denitrification, which in Lake Onego removes over 90 % of the bioavailable nitrogen input, but is often ignored in studies of other large lakes. Zooplankton are critical to the functioning of ocean food webs because of their utter abundance and vital ecosystem roles. Zooplankton communities are highly diverse and thus perform a variety of ecosystem functions, thus changes in their community or food web structure may provide evidence of ecosystem alteration. Assemblage structure and trophodynamics of mesozooplantkon communities were examined across the Adriatic basin, the northernmost and most productive basin of the Mediterranean Sea. Samples were collected in June–July 2019 along coast-offshore transects covering the whole western Adriatic side, consistently environmental variables were also recorded. Results showed a clear separation between samples from the northern-central Adriatic and the southern ones, with a further segregation, although less clear, of inshore vs. off-shore stations, the latter mostly dominated in the central and southern stations by gelatinous plankton. Such patterns were mainly driven by chlorophyll-a concentration (as a proxy of primary production) for northern-central stations, i.e. closer to the Po river input, and by temperature and salinity, for southern ones, with the DistLM model explaining 46 % of total variance. The analysis of stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon allowed to identify a complex food web characterized by 3 trophic levels from herbivores to carnivores, passing through the mixed feeding behavior of omnivores, shifting from phytoplankton/detritus ingestion to microzooplankton. Trophic structure also spatially varied according to sub-area, with the northern-central sub-areas differing from each other and from the southern stations. Our results highlighted the importance of environmental variables as drivers of zooplanktonic communities and the complex structure of their food webs. Disentangling and considering such complexity is crucial to generate realistic predictions on the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, especially in high productive and, at the same time, overexploited area such as the Adriatic Sea.\u0000

The fate of (micro)plastic particles in the open ocean is controlled by physical and biological processes. Here, we model the effects of biofouling on the subsurface vertical distribution of spherical, virtual plastic particles with radii of 0.01–1 mm. For the physics, four vertical velocity terms are included: advection, wind-driven mixing, tidally induced mixing, and the sinking velocity of the biofouled particle. For the biology, we simulate the attachment, growth and loss of algae on particles. We track 10,000 particles for one year in three different regions with distinct biological and physical properties: the low productivity region of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, the high productivity region of the Equatorial Pacific and the high mixing region of the Southern Ocean. The growth of biofilm mass in the euphotic zone and loss of mass below the euphotic zone result in the oscillatory behaviour of particles, where the larger (0.1–1.0 mm) particles have much shorter average oscillation lengths (< 10 days; 90th percentile) than the smaller (0.01–0.1 mm) particles (up to 130 days; 90th percentile). A subsurface maximum concentration occurs just below the mixed layer depth (around 30 m) in the Equatorial Pacific, which is most pronounced for larger particles (0.1–1.0 mm). This occurs since particles become neutrally buoyant when the processes affecting the settling velocity of the particle and the motion of the ocean are in equilibrium. Seasonal effects in the subtropical gyre result in particles sinking below the mixed layer depth only during spring blooms, but otherwise remaining within the mixed layer. The strong winds and deepest average mixed layer depth in the Southern Ocean (400 m) result in the deepest redistribution of particles (> 5000 m). Our results show that the vertical movement of particles is mainly affected by physical (wind-induced mixing) processes within the mixed layer and biological (biofilm) dynamics below the mixed layer. Furthermore, positively buoyant particles with radii of 0.01–1.0 mm can sink far below the euphotic zone and mixed layer in regions with high near-surface mixing or high biological activity. This work can easily be coupled to other models to simulate open-ocean biofouling dynamics, in order to reach a better understanding of where ocean (micro)plastic ends up.\u0000

The land data assimilation system, LDAS-Monde, developed by the Research Department of the French Meteorological service (Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques – CNRM) is capable of well representing Land Surface Variables (LSVs) from regional to global scales. It jointly assimilates satellite-derived observations of leaf area index (LAI) and surface soil moisture (SSM) into the Interactions between Soil Biosphere and Atmosphere (ISBA) land surface model (LSM), increasing the accuracy of the model simulations and forecasts of the LSVs. The assimilation of vegetation variables directly impacts RZSM through seven control variables consisting in soil moisture of seven soil layers from the soil surface to 1 m depth. This capability is particularly useful in dry conditions, where SSM and RZSM are decoupled to a large extent. However, this positive impact does not reach its full potential due to the low temporal availability of optical-based LAI observations, at best, every ten days, and can suffer from months of no data over regions and seasons with heavy cloud cover such as winter or monsoon conditions. In that context, this study investigates the assimilation of low frequency passive microwave vegetation optical depth (VOD), available in almost all weather conditions, as a proxy of LAI. The Vegetation Optical Depth Climate Archive (VODCA) dataset provides near-daily observations of vegetation conditions, far more frequently than optical based product such as LAI. This study's goal is to convert the more frequent X-band VOD observations into proxy-LAI observations through linear re-scaling and to assimilate them in place of direct LAI observations. Seven assimilation experiments were run from 2003 to 2018 over the contiguous United States (CONUS), with 1) no assimilation, the assimilation of 2) SSM, 3) LAI, 4) re-scaled VODX, 5) re-scaled VODX only when LAI observations available, 6) LAI + SSM, and 7) re-scaled VODX + SSM. This study analyzes these assimilation experiments by comparing to satellite derived observations and in situ measurements and is focused on the variables of LAI, SSM, gross primary production (GPP), and evapotranspiration (ET). Each experiment is driven by atmospheric forcing reanalysis from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA5. Results showed improved representation of GPP and ET by assimilating re-scaled VOD in place of LAI. Various machine learning methods were attempted in the global mapping of surface ocean partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) to reduce the uncertainty of global ocean CO2 sink estimate due to undersampling of pCO2. In previous researches the predicators of pCO2 were usually selected empirically based on theoretic drivers of surface ocean pCO2 and same combination of predictors were applied in all areas unless lack of coverage. However, the differences between the drivers of surface ocean pCO2 in different regions were not considered. In this work, we combined the stepwise regression algorithm and a Feed Forward Neural Network (FFNN) to selected predicators of pCO2 based on mean absolute error in each of the 11 biogeochemical provinces defined by Self-Organizing Map (SOM) method. Based on the predicators selected, a monthly global 1° × 1° surface ocean pCO2 product from January 1992 to August 2019 was constructed. Validation of different combination of predicators based on the SOCAT dataset version 2020 and independent observations from time series stations was carried out. The prediction of pCO2 based on region-specific predicators selected by the stepwise FFNN algorithm were more precise than that based on predicators from previous researches. Appling of a FFNN size improving algorithm in each province decreased the mean absolute error (MAE) of global estimate to 11.32 μatm and the root mean square error (RMSE) to 17.99 μatm. Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) is one of the major processes limiting the release of the greenhouse gas methane from natural environments. In Lake Kinneret sediments, iron-coupled AOM (Fe-AOM) was suggested to play a substantial role (10–15 % relative to methanogenesis) in the methanic zone (> 20 cm sediment depth), based on geochemical profiles and experiments on fresh sediments. Apparently, the oxidation of methane is mediated by a combination of mcr gene bearing archaea and aerobic bacterial methanotrophs. Here we aimed to investigate the survival of this complex microbial interplay under controlled conditions. We followed the AOM process during long-term (~18 months) anaerobic slurry experiments of these methanic sediments with two stages of incubations and additions of 13C-labeled methane, multiple electron acceptors and inhibitors. After these incubation stages carbon isotope measurements in the dissolved inorganic pool still showed considerable AOM (3–8 % relative to methanogenesis). Specific lipid carbon isotope measurements and metagenomic analyses indicate that after the prolonged incubation aerobic methanotrophic bacteria were no longer involved in the oxidation process, whereas mcr gene bearing archaea were most likely responsible for oxidizing the methane. Humic substances and iron oxides are likely electron acceptors to support this oxidation, whereas sulfate, manganese, nitrate, and nitrite did not support the AOM in these methanic sediments. Our results suggest in the natural lake sediments methanotrophic bacteria are responsible for part of the methane oxidation by the reduction of combined micro levels of oxygen and iron oxides in a cryptic cycle, while the rest of the methane is converted by reverse methanogenesis. After long-term incubation, the latter prevails without bacterial methanotropic activity and with a different iron reduction pathway.\u0000

Wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) are forecast to retract in their ranges due to climate change and potholes that typically contain ponded water year-round, which support a larger proportion of biological communities, are most sensitive to climate change. In addition to climate, land use activities and terrain also influence ponded water amounts in PPR wetlands. However, terrain is not typically included in models forecasting the impacts of climate change on PPR wetlands. Using a combination of variables representing climate, land cover and land use, and terrain, we predicted wetland permanence class in the southern Boreal, Parkland and Grassland of the Alberta PPR. We show that while climate is the strongest predictor of wetland permanence class in each Natural Region, topography was nearly as important in the Parkland and Southern Boreal.\u0000
