Metaphorically, this need turns paramedics into “trauma junkies,” because answering calls involving multiple casualties, physical trauma, and fast-paced action becomes the “real” work of emergency medical services personnel. Calls evoking less sophistication of response behavior are devalued. Within an occupational milieu of excitement, danger, and public attention, paramedics perform a variety of roles constituting street work similar to that documented for police officers. Playing the roles of authority figure, lifesaver, information specialist, partner, grief manager, and counselor, paramedics are immersed in a work world replete with teamwork demands, conflicts with medical and nonmedical personnel, vaguely defined legal standards, and occupational uncertainty due to the newness of their medical niche.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"17 1","pages":"162 - 183"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80180645","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With recent heavy migration producing a demographic shift in the population, two polarized groups have arisen in the state of Oklahoma. The evolving struggle over the control of alcohol legislation (public drinking and selling liquor by the drink are illegal in this state) represents the clash of norms and values held by these competing factions. We examine the laws governing liquor, the patterns of law enforcement, and the interactional strategies by which these laws are circumvented. We find a compromised reality, where serving alcohol remains outlawed, but violations are predominantly “winked at” rather than prosecuted. Winking is seen to have two divergent functions: Manifestly, it benefits drinking groups by allowing them to engage quietly in a “deviant” activity, but its more powerful effect is to latently benefit drys by maintaining the existing social order—a legalistic dominance hierarchy where their norms and values are accorded superior status.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"42 1","pages":"123 - 139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84231883","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Total microreduction is not possible, but partial reduction is; all macrostructures can be translated into particular space, time, and number combinations of microprocesses. The basic microunit is the interactional situation, not the individual; social processes may be represented as chains of interaction rituals. Methodological innovations needed include a method of systematic microsampling of situations, both for description of the basis of macrostructures and for testing theories. Standardized measures of micro-situations may include recorded speech codes as a measure of cultural capital, emotional tones of spoken names as a measure of reputation, and voice tone, facial expression, or bodily posture as measures of emotional energies. One advantage of such techniques is that they may be unobtrusive measures.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"21 1","pages":"184 - 202"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91307594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Observations were made of 166 male sex offenders in 236 parole interviews, and detailed interviews were conducted with parole board members. The results indicate that although parole board members believe impression management occurs in all parole interviews, the issue of the veracity of the candidates in presenting themselves rarely arises. Instead, the candidate's self-presentation is most often interpreted as a reflection of his self-conception, which may or may not correspond with the board's construction of the candidate's “true” self. Furthermore, rather than routinely dismissing impression management as a deceptive camouflage that obstructs accurate appraisals of the candidate's future behavior, in some cases the board sees the ability to develop competent impression management skills as a positive asset to have in adjusting to the outside community, and therefore actually encourages some candidates to develop their impression management skills further.","PeriodicalId":89870,"journal":{"name":"Women's health & urban life : an international and interdisciplinary journal","volume":"87 1","pages":"140 - 161"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89049887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
