For prime—target pairs containing repetitions of a concept or semantically related concepts, pictures provided priming of word targets in magnitudes at least as large as the priming provided by words themselves. Such equivalent priming by surface forms occurred for concrete word targets and for abstract word targets in pairs comprising a variety of semantic associations. Recognition memory for pairs in the lexical decision task revealed both form-dependent and form-independent components in the episodic trace. The results are interpreted as consistent with a single system of semantic representation accessed in common by both surface forms, rather than separate form-specific semantic systems.

","PeriodicalId":89821,"journal":{"name":"Journal of verbal learning and verbal behavior","volume":"23 1","pages":"Pages 67-83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1984-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0022-5371(84)90509-7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"55832367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Duration of the rehearsal activity, however, failed to strengthen the association (improve memory for cooccurrence), despite use of transfer-appropriate recognition tests and sensitive paired-associate learning transfer tasks used to measure associative strength. In addition, varying the amount of cognitive capacity allocated to the rehearsal task also failed to produce evidence of increases in associative strength with longer durations of Type I rehearsal. These results disconfirmed a hypothesis suggesting that the automaticity of the rehearsal process was responsible for the lack of duration effects. The results are consistent with the idea that association formation is dependent upon processing a relation between two words, and that the strength of the association is a function of the number of different relations processed, rather than being solely dependent on either sheer duration of processing or the amount of cognitive capacity devoted to processing.

","PeriodicalId":89821,"journal":{"name":"Journal of verbal learning and verbal behavior","volume":"22 6","pages":"Pages 650-666"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0022-5371(83)90385-7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"55828962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first three studies test predictions from the dual code model of phoneme identification (Foss, D.J., & Blank, M.A. Cognitive Psychology, 1980, 12, 1–31). According to that model, subjects in a phoneme monitoring experiment respond to a prelexical code when engaged in a relatively easy task, and to a postlexical code when the task is difficult. The experiments controlled ease of processing either by giving subjects multiple targets for which to monitor or by preceding the target with a similar-sounding phoneme that draws false alarms. The predictions from the model were not sustained. Furthermore, evidence for a paradoxical nonword superiority effect was observed. In Experiment IV reaction times (RTs) to all possible /d/-initial CVCs were gathered. RTs were unaffected by the target item's status as a word or nonword, but they were affected by the internal phonetic structure of the target-bearing item. Vowel duration correlated highly (0.627) with RTs. Experiment V examined previous work purporting to demonstrate that semantic predictability affects how the speech code is processed, in particular that semantic predictability leads to responses based upon a postlexical code. That study found “predictability” effects when words occurred in isolation; further, it found that vowel duration and other phonetic factors can account parsimoniously for the existing results. These factors also account for the apparent nonword superiority effects observed earlier. Implications of the present work for theoretical models that stress the interaction between semantic context and speech processing are discussed, as are implications for use of the phoneme monitoring task.

","PeriodicalId":89821,"journal":{"name":"Journal of verbal learning and verbal behavior","volume":"22 6","pages":"Pages 609-632"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0022-5371(83)90365-1","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"32916688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Green (Journal of Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior, 1979, 18, 481–496) found that subjects could easily learn a relatively complex set of phrase structure rules provided the language contained a well-organized system of markers. Green's result was replicated in this paper. However, once a reference field was added to the artificial language, the organized marker system lost its effectiveness. Subjects ignored the marker system to concentrate on learning the reference system even when the reference system did not contain regularities whereas the marker system did. The learning strategies used by subjects in these experiments suggest that language learning occurs by learning the regularities inherent in the semantic system and not by learning any regularities present in the syntax system.

","PeriodicalId":89821,"journal":{"name":"Journal of verbal learning and verbal behavior","volume":"22 6","pages":"Pages 701-718"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0022-5371(83)90415-2","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"55829197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To avoid this, recall with tests of fixed size after selfpaced reading of expository passages of various lengths (1056,1709, and 2689 words) was measured. More detail was remembered 23 hours later for short passages than long. Length effects were observed in selfpaced reading even if there was no intent to remember. Neither listening at 99, 131, and 164 words per minute nor experimenter-paced reading at various rates produced length decrements. The three experiments reported focus on phonological recoding in fluent reading of meaningful sentences, and ask whether spelling-sound rules play a role in this process. The results show that effects attributed to spelling-sound rule use—effects previously found in lexical decision tasks with single words—emerge also in sentence-reading tasks. These effects include inhibition on words with similar spellings and different pronounciations and exception word/ regular word differences. Specifically, two studies are presented showing that material people learn when in a high arousal state and material they learn when in a normal arousal state is subsequently best recalled when they are in a similar arousal state. Then a brief review of literature and a third study are presented supporting the claim that arousal acting as a cue for arousal-related material in memory may provide a partial explanation for why moods cue similarly toned material from memory. The literature review reveals that positive mood inducers elicit elevated autonomic arousal and the third study shows that elevated arousal in combination with a positive mood enhances the effect the positive mood has on subsequent judgments, whereas arousal by itself has no impact on judgments. Finally, it is suggested that arousal acting as a cue for arousal-related material in memory may account for such previously observed phenomena as state-dependent memory effects produced by alcohol and drugs, “misattribution” of arousal, “excitation transfer,” and effects that arousal has been shown to have on self-focus and humor.

","PeriodicalId":89821,"journal":{"name":"Journal of verbal learning and verbal behavior","volume":"22 6","pages":"Pages 633-649"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1983-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S0022-5371(83)90375-4","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"55829264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
