Forty eight students of the University Jose do Rosario Vellano - Brazil took part in this double blind, placebo control study, with ages ranging from 18 to 25 years old, patterned into three groups: placebo group; Sanguinaria canadensis 2.1 mg/day, and Sanguinaria canadensis 4.2 mg/day. Chewing gums were used three times a day for ten days. During the first phase of the study, the chewing gum action was evaluated on dental plaque already installed and in the second phase its action was analyzed on the forming plaque. The results showed statistically significant differences among group I in the first and second phases of the study (p < 0.05 Anova One Way - Tukey Test, t student). The results related to the number of Streptococcus sp. showed statistically sig- nificant differences among groups I, II and III, with 0, 5, 15 and 30 minutes after using the chewing gums (p < 0.01 t Stu- dent test), These values suggest that Sanguinaria canadensis associated to a chewing gum decreased significantly dental plaque scores and number of Streptococcus sp. when compared to placebo chewing gums.","PeriodicalId":89728,"journal":{"name":"The open complementary medicine journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"97-101"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68129072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The writhing test, formalin test and hot-plate test were used to evaluate the antinociceptive activity of the acetone extracts of the three Species of Fungi of Basidiomycetes in the study respectively. The extract of Ganoderma lucidum inhibited in a dose-dependent manner the acetic acid-induced abdominal constrictions in mice (p<0.05). Also both phases of the response were significantly inhibited in the formalin test (p<0.05). In the hot-plate test, results showed that extract of Ganoderma lucidum significantly inhibited the reaction time to thermal stimuli at 30, 60, and 90 min (p<0.05). The preliminary toxicologic study demonstrated the safety of it. However the ex- tract from fermented mushroom of Coprinus comatus and Grifola frondosa did not show significantly expectative antino- ciceptive effect. Our results show the acetone extract of Ganoderma lucidum is a potent analgesic drug.","PeriodicalId":89728,"journal":{"name":"The open complementary medicine journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"73-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68128946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Depression is a wide- spread and often chronic condition. Lifetime prevalence estimates for major depressive disorder are approximately 15% to 20%; 1-year prevalence estimates are 5% to 10%. Moreover, depression is characterized by high rates of relapse: 22% to 50% of patients suffer recurrent episodes within 6 months after recovery. Depression is associated with a high incidence of co-morbid somatic illness. Individuals suffering from major depression run a higher relative risk of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis compared with the general popula- tion. In general, depressed individuals exhibit a less active life-style and have a reduced cardio-respiratory fitness in com- parison with the general population. Strong evidence demonstrates that lack of physical activity is associated with an un- healthier body mass and composition, and a biomarker risk profile for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteo- porosis. A growing body of evidence suggests that exercise is an effective treatment for depression. For mild to moderate depression the effect of exercise may be comparable to antidepressant medication and psychotherapy; for severe depres- sion exercise seems to be a valuable complementary therapy to the traditional treatments. Exercise training not only im- proves depression, but also produces 'positive side effects' on depression associated physical diseases and cognitive de- cline. We identified the meta-analyses in the area of exer- cise/physical activity and depression from 1998 until 2008. Relevant studies were identified by searching PubMed, Med- line, Sport Discus, and PsycInfo. Terms used in the search were 'depression', 'clinical depression', 'depressive symp- toms', 'exercise', 'physical activity', 'meta-analysis'. We also identified the meta-analyses and single-studies on the theme depression as an independent risk factor for develop- ment of coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes and osteopo- rosis. All studies that investigated the role of exercise in the association among depression and these diseases were in- cluded. Finally, literature was also identified by citation tracking using reference lists from selected papers.","PeriodicalId":89728,"journal":{"name":"The open complementary medicine journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"78-83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68128995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in Chinese traditional medicine, the plant is usually used as an antidiabetic agent. One of the ac- tive components is charantin. Aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) were used for the purifying saponin because of their low cost. ATPS can reduce amount of organic solvent and the danger of explosion necessitates special equipment leading to increased costs. We conducted five focus groups of six to eight participants each, with users of CAM recruited through experienced CAM providers and clinics. Eligible participants were aged 21 or older, had used CAM in the last 12 months, and believed the treatment to be beneficial. The focus group discussions were digitally recorded, transcribed, and analyzed through a quali- tative content analysis. Responses were inductively coded for common themes, and then placed into broader conceptual categories reflecting the CAM outcome domains suggested by Verhoef and colleagues. Participants described physical health benefits including symptom relief and improved function, and positive psychological benefits such as improved coping and resilience. Social health benefits that arose from the positive aspects of the patient-practitioner relationship were also reported, including support and advocacy. In addition, participants identified empowerment, increased hope and spiritual growth as results of receiving CAM treatments. A new behavioral health outcome domain emerged as partici- pants reported that CAM use had fostered behavioral changes such as increased exercise, smoking cessation and improv- ing their diets. These patient-reported benefits of CAM treatment are consistent with the outcome model proposed by Verhoef and col- leagues, and extend this model by identifying a new outcome domain—behavioral health outcome. The findings provide insight and direction for the development of outcome and process measures to evaluate CAM treatment effects.","PeriodicalId":89728,"journal":{"name":"The open complementary medicine journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"35-45"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68128928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though this medicinal plan is abundantly used in India, detailed studies are lacking on the variants and seasonal variations, which are to be addressed. The present study is carried out to evaluate the antiulcerogenic property of aqueous ethanolic extracts of the aerial parts in various ulcer models in animals. The study clearly elucidated that the drug was found to increase the defensive factors by virtue of its ulcer score, carbohy- drate protein ratio and decrease in aggressive factors like free acidity, pepsin apart from other biochemical parameters. Plants collected during flowering season are more effective than that collected during vegetative seasons. Extract signifi- cantly reduced the formation of gastric and duodenal lesions by virtue of its cyto-protective and mucin productive activi- ties.","PeriodicalId":89728,"journal":{"name":"The open complementary medicine journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"19-24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68128852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
