However, few reports presented the status of dental caries in Chinese ancient people. Aim: To describe the prevalence of dental caries in 104 skulls about 2,200 years ago. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed using 104 skulls which were excavated from the ar- chaeological sites of Emperor QinShihuang's Mausoleum and Terra-Cotta Warriors and Horses. The degree of caries le- sions was identified and the distribution of tooth cavity was recorded and all the data were statistically analyzed using SPSS15.0 for Windows. Results: Dental caries was common before 2,200 years and the prevalence of dental caries increased with age. The posi- tion of dental caries in the skeletal remains was significantly different and the sequence of prevalence of dental caries was M2 > M3 > M1 > P2 > P1 > I1 > I2 > C. The interproximal lesions were identified as the most common type and the se- verity of every caries lesions was not the same in every skull. Conclusion: This investigation drew a picture of the dental caries of Chinese males living around 2,200 years ago, which will be beneficial to understanding the people's working and living conditions at that time.","PeriodicalId":89502,"journal":{"name":"The open anthropology journal","volume":"3 1","pages":"20-24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68092954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: The number of molar cusps of study casts of an unselected sample from a 12 year old Hong Kong Oral Health Survey of 12 year old children (n=459; 295 boys and 164 girls) were studied. Results: For upper first molars, 5-cusp molars were the most prevalent in males (39%) while 4-cusp molars were the most prevalent in females (39%). For lower first molars, 5-cusp molars were the most prevalent in both sexes (63%-72%). For lower second molars, 5-cusp molars were the most prevalent in both sexes (43%-53%). Conclusion: Different from traditionally described, the Southern Chinese has more 5-cusp lower second molars than the 4- cusp ones. In modern man, the number of cusps of the upper molars is frequently reduced from four to three. The formula for the number of cusps of the upper molar series is changing from 4-4-4 to 4-4-3 and 4-3-3. The trend is more marked in fe- males than in males of all populations that have been stud- ied. In most studies, males generally showed a lesser ten- dency than females to reduction in the number of cusps of the upper molars. The process of reduction occurs through the elimination of the hypocone or distolingual cusp, with a subsequent decrease in the mesiodistal crown diameter and in the occlusal area.","PeriodicalId":89502,"journal":{"name":"The open anthropology journal","volume":"3 1","pages":"16-19"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68093082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explored traditional Shona womens experiences of mubobobo from an ethnopsychological perspective. Participants were three men who were alleged to be the perpetrators of mubobobo and three women who claimed to be the victims of mubobobo. The men and women in this study were not related or involved in litigation relat- ing to mubobobo. In fact, the presented cases in this study were isolated individual experiences of mubobobo. In-depth in- terviews were held to assess the views of participants who were embroiled in the mubobobo controversy as perpetrators and victims. A thematic content analysis of the narratives of the participants was done to establish the reasonableness of participantsconvictions about mubobobo in the context of human sexuality. The findings of the study revealed that tradi- tional Shona women experienced nocturnal emission like any other women in the world but due to cultural constraints they could not believe the excitation of their reproductive system in their sleep as real and a normal biological process. Furthermore, research on the sexuality of traditional Shona women could have a special focus on women empowerment in the context of sexual and reproductive health education.","PeriodicalId":89502,"journal":{"name":"The open anthropology journal","volume":"2 1","pages":"74-81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68093001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, little is known about their pattern of inheritance due to lack of advanced statistical genetic model-fitting techniques despite the existence of advanced statistical packages. Objectives: The aim of the present study is to determine the mode of inheritance of dermatoglyphic traits through complex segregation analysis. Subjects and Methods: Finger and palmar prints of 325 individuals belonging to 104 families from the Chuvashian popu- lation of Russia were used for principal component analysis, familial correlation, and segregation analysis (package MAN-5). Results: The results suggest a common internal structure of three factors when compared with other populations. (b) Sig- nificant familial correlations (except spouse) indicate the involvement of familial components to the variation of dermato- glyphic traits. (c) Segregation analysis reveals the transmission of genetic effects in the families, which follows the Men- delian model and confirm major gene effect on factors 1 and 2, whereas there is no evidence of major gene effect or an environmental effect on factor 3. Conclusion: Major gene involvement with Mendelian expectation regarding finger dermatoglyphics is confirmed for all analyzed traits. However there is no evidence of significant support for major gene effect or environmental effect on pal- mar a-b ridge counts.","PeriodicalId":89502,"journal":{"name":"The open anthropology journal","volume":"2 1","pages":"64-73"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68092946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross sectional sample of 364 adult males and females aged 18-60 years was studied. Stature, body weight, skinfold thickness, circumferences, fat percent, grip strength and blood pressure were measured on each subject. Body mass index, Trunk extremity ratio and Grand mean thickness were computed statis- tically. A higher percentage of chronic energy deficient (CED) males and female subjects indicated a poor nutritional status of Saharias. A few overweight males were also found. More females were found to be undernourished than males as per the cut off values of MUAC. All the subjects were found to have normal blood pressure with the exception of a few hypertensive cases among males in overweight category. An influence of changing life style among Saharia males was more noticeable.","PeriodicalId":89502,"journal":{"name":"The open anthropology journal","volume":"2 1","pages":"58-63"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68092941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twelve percent of Paliyan marriages occur through pedogamous union with step- and adopted children, some calling this their preferred form of marriage. Paliyan subsistence, households, types of marriage, and pedogamy are described. Although two sample cultures exhibit more aversion to sex in quasi-incestuous marriages than Wolf's revision of Westermark's incest theory would predict, the 10 culture comparison suggests that the unions in question may best be looked at as: (a) ways for elders to control marriage to protect family resources, (b) contingency arrangements in tightly structured systems, or (c) products of individualized decision making in loosely structured, un-coercive systems.","PeriodicalId":89502,"journal":{"name":"The open anthropology journal","volume":"20 1","pages":"48-57"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"68092936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: The material comprised lateral cephalometric radiographs of a random sample of 200 males and 205 females 12-year-old southern Chinese, and an additional sample of 43 males and 43 females 12-year-old British Cau- casian children in Hong Kong. The radiographs were digitized twice with the Computer-Assisted Simulation System for Orthognathic Surgery (CASSOS) program. Results: The results showed that there were statistically significant ethnic differences for 15 out of the 17 cephalometric variables (P<0.05-0.001). There were statistically significant ethnic differences for 11 variables in males (P<0.05-0.001) and 15 variables in females (P<0.05-0.001). The size of the statistically significant gender differences varied from -0.4 to 0.8 (P<0.05-0.001) in SD scores for Chinese and from 0.5 to 0.6 (P<0.01) for Caucasian. The size of the observed statisti- cally significant ethnic differences varied from -1.7 to 1.3 (P<0.05-0.001) in SD scores for female and from -1.6 to 1.0 (P<0.05-0.001) for male.
