These differences are observed in both solid organ transplant recipients and in nontransplant patients. This review summarizes the pharmacokinetic differences thought to be dependent on sex and ethnicity noted with immunosuppressive agents commonly used in transplantation. This manuscript also touches on how these differences may translate into observed drug interactions. Furthermore, potential factors underlying the sex and ethnicity differences are evaluated. Current evidence points to differences in drug-metabolizing enzymes, transporters, cytokines, and environmental influences to account for the observed heterogeneity in drug response. Many of these factors seem to be under genetic control, and thus areas for further research are suggested.","PeriodicalId":89378,"journal":{"name":"Graft (Georgetown, Tex.)","volume":"19 1","pages":"294-302"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84428767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are five main classes of pathogens, namely, viruses, bacteria, parasites, fungi, and worms. The complex relationships between these pathogenic micro-organisms and the vertebrate host are perhaps most clearly understood for viruses. The survival of viruses depends on the survival of susceptible hosts. In recent years, chemokines have been shown to play an integral role in the recruitment of cells to sites of infection, thus mediating the healing process. This review will provide an overview of immune responses with reference to viral infections and chemokines. There has been a gradu-ally increasing recognition of the importance of antigen-independent factors influencingthe development and progression of CAN. One important antigen-independent hor-mone in this setting is angiotensin II (AII), which is associated with progressive kidneydisease. Although the pathogenesis of native kidney disease may differ from CAN, thechronic progressive nature of both entities raises the hypothesis that AII also has a rolein CAN. However, AII also serves as a theoretical focal point, linking many of the factorsinvolved in CAN.
