Han belyser på forbilledlig vis bredden i – og samspillet mellom – de militære og ikke-militære virkemidlene Russland bruker for å fremme sine interesser. Bokens relevans strekker seg utover det svenske publikumet den er skrevet for og vil være av interesse for alle som ønsker å forstå både Russland og det nye sikkerhetspolitiske landskapet Europa befinner seg i. Oscar Jonsson has written an important and accessible book (Hotet från Ryssland, in English: The Threat Posed by Russia) that thoroughly explores Russia's perspective on the world and how we can understand the threats posed by Russia. Jonsson describes the vast array of military and non-military means available to Russia and how they are used in combination to enhance Russia’s interests. The book's relevance extends beyond the Swedish audience it was written for, and it will be of interest to anyone seeking to understand both Russia and the new security-political landscape Europe finds itself in.","PeriodicalId":88615,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk ost-forum","volume":"32 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134901229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This review looks at two books about the war in Ukraine, Krigsherren i Kreml. Putin og hans tid by Aage Storm Borchgrevink and Putins krig. Landet som vaknade (The Country That Woke Up) tells the story of the new Ukrainian nation's rise after the fall of the Soviet Union, but above all, it is the story of how the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war has made Ukraine's nation-building irreversible. In Belarus, populism and regular welfare deliveries contribute to the tenacity of the country’s authoritarianism. The sub-state level of governance is important as Belarusians’ welfare primarily is delivered at the local level. However, the local elected bodies play a minimal role, and it is in practice local departments of the central administration that make decisions locally. This manifestation of the centralism of Belarusian authoritarianism is not only challenged by the opposition in the country. Systemic publications also advocate for less central management of local politics and more power for the local, elected councils. This article presents the distinctive features of Belarusian authoritarianism and provides a detailed overview of the local level of governance in the country. The reform debate – both from the side of the regime and the opposition – is presented. The possible importance of the local level for the survival of Belarusian authoritarianism is discussed in the light of the literature on the resilience of authoritarian regimes.","PeriodicalId":88615,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk ost-forum","volume":"14 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135367969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Med empirisk udgangspunkt i journalistisk materiale og eksisterende forskning i aktivisme og protest i Rusland foreslår jeg i artiklen, at antikrigsaktivisterne kan inddeles i seks kategorier: Masseprotester; enkeltpersonsprotester; kunstneriske og kulturelle protester; kommunikationsaktivisme; sabotage; og hverdagsaktivisme. I sin konklusion foreslår artiklen, at opmærksomhed på forskellige typer protester, ud over massedemonstrationer, bidrager værdifuldt til vores forståelse af protestdynamikker i Rusland. This article provides an overview of anti-war protests and logics of contention in contemporary Russia. With a point of departure in journalistic material and drawing on existing research on protest in Russia, the article suggests that anti-war protests can be divided into six categories: mass protests; solo pickets; cultural and artistic protests; information activism; sabotage; and civil disobedience. The article argues that anti-war protests in contemporary Russia mainly follow a logic of bearing witness. In conclusion, the article suggests that paying attention to various types of protest, beyond mass demonstrations, contributes valuably to our understanding of protest dynamics in Russia.","PeriodicalId":88615,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk ost-forum","volume":"42 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135044930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Between 1991 and 1999, corpus planning addressed urgent issues such as transliteration and orthography, but corpus planning was sporadic and often initiated by private actors motivated by purism. Between 2000 and 2018, corpus planning gradually gave standard Ukrainian a firmer basis, peaking with the National Academy of Sciences’ monolingual general dictionary of Ukrainian issued from 2010. Since 2019, corpus planning has been remarkably streamlined, resulting both from the 2019 language law and from the 2019 orthography. I conclude that speakers of Ukrainian, including the numerous Ukrainian citizens who in the third millennium have shifted from Russian to Ukrainian – a development accelerating after Russia’s full-scale aggression in February 2022 – have at their disposal a standard language marked by ‘Ausbauization’ (Fishman, 2008): Standard Ukrainian is being built away from Russian and made more unique while accepting Western foreign languages components.","PeriodicalId":88615,"journal":{"name":"Nordisk ost-forum","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135095653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
