Patients were treated at one of 48 physiotherapy clinics between January 1, 2005 and September 30, 2006. All patients were categorized into either: (i) physical Comorbidity Group (n = 898), or (ii) only Back Pain Group (n = 1879). There were no baseline statistical differences in symptom duration, visual analogue scale, function and medication use between groups. The Comorbidity Group was significantly older by 5 years and more females (p < 0.0001); odds ratios were adjusted for age and sex. Logistic regression analysis revealed no statistically significant differences for change in functional score (OR = 0.996), change in pain rating (OR = 1.013) and total treatment sessions (OR = 0.997), between groups. Those with LBP and a physical comorbidity (coronary artery disease, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, non-spinal malignancy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or any other non-spinal condition) had no statistically significant differences in outcomes compared with those with LBP only. The clinical approach to chronic low back patients with an associated physical comorbidity may initially seem more intimidating or complex, but the potential for recovery is just as favourable as that for patients with uncomplicated chronic LBP.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"13 1","pages":"56 - 62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2011.557781","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69370634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thirty healthy, adult, non-wheelchair users (16 male, 14 female) performed wheelchair propulsion on a treadmill at six workloads, differing in angle and speed. Energy expenditure was measured by both SWA and indirect calorimetry. During wheelchair propulsion without incline, mean differences and limits of agreement from the Bland–Altman plots were 9.8 ± 12.8, 10.9 ± 10.0 and 10.7 ± 11.4 kJ/min for 4, 6 and 8 km/h, respectively. With an inclination of 1°, mean differences and limits of agreement were 7.4 ± 8.8 and 4.5 ± 9.6 kJ/min for 4 and 6 km/h, respectively. With an inclination of 2° and a speed of 4 km/h, mean difference and limits of agreement was 1.4 ± 10.5 kJ/min. There were no statistical agreement (p > 0.05) between SWA and indirect calorimetry during wheelchair propulsion without incline. During wheelchair propulsion with inclination the intra-class correlation (ICC) was 0.36–0.50, which implies that 36–50% of the variance observed was explained by differences among individuals (p < 0.05). The use of SWA to estimate energy expenditure during wheelchair propulsion is not recommended using the existing algorithms.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"13 1","pages":"42 - 49"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2011.572997","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69371638","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thirty-nine subjects with dizziness and/or disequilibrium were recruited from two Ear, Nose and Throat departments, and completed the three DHI versions during their visit to the clinic. Thirty-one subjects also completed the questionnaires at home the next day. For relative reliability, intraclass correlation values between 0.89 and 0.91 were found. For absolute reliability, the method errors were 6 points for DHI, 1 point for DHIsf and 3 points for DHI-S. The correlation between DHIsf and DHI was r = −0.91 and between DHI-S and DHI r = 0.94. Answers were missing to 0.4% of the questions in DHI, 1.7% in DHIsf and 0.8% in DHI-S. It was concluded that DHIsf and DHI-S showed good test–retest reliability in line with that of DHI, and both short versions were highly correlated with the original version. The DHI-S showed better relative reliability, correlated stronger with DHI and had fewer missing answers compared with the DHIsf. DHI-S is therefore recommended when a short version of the DHI is needed.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"13 1","pages":"50 - 55"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2011.559667","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69370675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study compared the self-efficacy score and clinical score for physiotherapy students following their pre-clinical training and those students who received 8 h of additional simulation training. Thus it may be that self-efficacy can be an outcome of education and plays an important role in how students perform on clinical placements. Correlations between self-efficacy score and weekly clinical scores were undertaken for the control and intervention groups. Significant positive correlations for the control group occurred between the total self-efficacy score and total clinical score at weeks 2 and 5 with a Spearman rho of 0.59 and 0.69, respectively. For the participants who received simulation training (intervention), negative correlations were found for the total self-efficacy score and total clinical score at week 1 with a Spearman rho of −0.72. Those students who received simulation training appeared to overestimate their performance, as determined by their self-efficacy questionnaire results. For those students who did not receive additional training, their self-efficacy tended to match their clinical ability.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"13 1","pages":"79 - 83"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2011.565072","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69371164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: A qualitative interview study was carried out with 11 women, aged 60–93 years (median age 68 years), participating in the BMTP for 4 months. Analysis of the open interviews was supported by qualitative content analysis. Findings: Two categories and four sub-categories were constructed from the analysis: Awareness and experiences of the body through back muscle exercise (sub-categories; Sense and awareness of straightening the back and The usefulness of increased bodily strength and mobility) and Social dimensions of group training (sub-categories: Affinity and support and Sense of trust and safety). The women experienced both bodily and social benefits from participation in the BMTP, including improved mobility, increased strength, physical activity, better sleep, reduced pain and uncertainty as well as positive experiences of training in a group under professional supervision. Conclusion: The study showed that professionally supervised specific back exercise training brought benefits to everyday life, increased well-being and quality of life, and provided an empowering complement to pharmacological therapy in this group of women.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"13 1","pages":"63 - 70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2011.575474","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69371646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

WCPT was founded sixty years ago, in 1951, and is now representing 101 member organizations with more than 300 000 members. At the webpage of WCPT, we can read the following about the mission of the organization: “ WCPT believes that every individual is entitled to the highest possible standard of culturally appropriate healthcare delivered in an atmosphere of trust and respect for human dignity, and underpinned by sound clinical reasoning and scientifi c evidence. It is committed to furthering the physical therapy profession and improving global health through ” . The vision of WCPT is to move physical therapy forward and the mission is to work to improve global health, by representing the physical therapy profession internationally, encouraging high standards of physical therapy research, education and practice, supporting communication and exchange of information among regions and member organizations of WCPT and collaborating with international and national organizations (1). WCPT, thus, has a great vision for the physiotherapy profession and great mission for physiotherapists, physiotherapy practice and research. Every fourth year a world congress is held by the organization. In June this year, the World Confederation for Physical Therapy congress will be held in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The organizers of the congress have, in accordance with the mission of WCPT, put emphasis on “ Moving Physical Therapy Forward ” around four program tracks: Global health, Professional issues, Professional practice, and Education and Research methodology. Within these tracks there will be something of interest for all the participating physiotherapists. Global health issues will probably become more important in the future for physiotherapists, as well as for other health professionals; issues such as rehabilitation, health promotion, consequences of inactivity, aging populations, road accidents and epidemics. Furthermore, great disasters in the world such as earthquakes, political instability and war, and increasing numbers of refugees will further emphasize the contribution of physiotherapists in the health care system. Hopefully, the WCPT congress will bring up these issues for discussion.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"13 1","pages":"40 - 41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2011.582345","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69371697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Factors that were found important were accessible facilities, instructors with knowledge on adapted exercise, and support from families and friends. Interestingly, many did not have enough knowledge on their body function and the essential requirements for participating in recreational exercise. This fi nding points to an important labour market opportunity for physiotherapists and related professions. A team of physiotherapists, Edwards and his coworkers, from Australia, Afghanistan and Sweden, report on a dialogue on ethical issues for an Afghan physical therapy curriculum. They report on a tension between normal ethical theory and individualistic communitarian understanding of ethics and that these tensions need to be solved with a narrative approach, which has implications across national and cultural boundaries. This article is the fi rst article of its kind, published in Advances in Physiotherapy , on the importance of multicultural ethical encounters in education and healthcare. Finally, Ekvall Hansson & Troein publish a case report on vestibular rehabilitation for vestibular migraine. The authors describe the assessment and treatment and hope that their treatment approach can be useful for physiotherapists and doctors who meet these patients in their practice. A book review on Using whole body vibration in physical therapy and sport: Clinical practice and treatment , by Albasini, Krause & Rembitzki (Churchill Livingstone, 2010), is reported by Rehn. He concludes that more research is needed before whole body vibration can be accepted as a universal treatment modality for physiotherapy. There is a current need to teach ethics in an Afghan physical therapy curriculum. However, the process by which the content for this would be developed stands in contrast to the “usual processes” of expatriate physical therapy teachers or consultants assisting in the development and teaching of curricular material, which, in turn, has steadily been moving towards an evidence-based practice model. The development of an ethics curriculum for Afghan physical therapists raises pedagogical and cultural issues for both expatriate and local educators. This dialogue about ethics for professional practice in Afghanistan identifies two ethical tensions: between normative ethical theory (with its universal truths and values, expressed in codes of conduct) with so-called “local moral experience” (Kleinman, What really matters: living a moral life amidst uncertainty and danger; Oxford University Press, 2006); and between individualistic and communitarian understandings of ethics. We propose a narratively oriented ethical approach to resolve these tensions in ethical action, which has pedagogical and professional practice implications across national and cultural boundaries.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"690 1","pages":"26 - 33"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2010.483015","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69368354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These diseases can all have a high cost for the healthcare system and can be prevented by physical activity. Many facilitators and barriers can influence exercise habits. The objective of the study is to investigate the importance of a number of personal and contextual factors for exercise participation in a group of people with physical disabilities. A questionnaire was sent to 137 adults with physical disability living in the Stockholm area. The response rate was 70%. Following factors were found important by a majority of respondents: accessible exercise facilities (82%), instructors with knowledge about adapted exercise (81%), a sense of belonging (68%), support from family and friends (54%); 34% stated they did not have enough knowledge about their body and disability to participate in recreational exercise. The most common reason for giving up a former exercise was health reasons or acquiring a disability. Among persons not currently active in recreational exercise, 51% wanted to try an exercise and 81% of them experienced they needed support in that. When promoting exercise, it is important to be aware of the role of contextual and personal factors for a person's motivation.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"386 1","pages":"18 - 25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2011.556752","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69369498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, randomized controlled trials addressing the subject are lacking. The aim of this study was to describe two patients, one with definite vestibular migraine and one with probable vestibular migraine, their assessment and treatment. Both patients were treated with vestibular rehabilitation and both experienced a reduction in symptoms after only a short period of rehabilitation. This suggests that vestibular rehabilitation might be a cheap and non-invasive treatment for vestibular migraine. Even though this study has a single-case design, we hope that it can be useful for physiotherapists and doctors who meet these patients in their practice.","PeriodicalId":87870,"journal":{"name":"Advances in physiotherapy","volume":"13 1","pages":"34 - 37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3109/14038196.2010.550061","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69369481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
