They have a higher age-adjusted death rate, compared with that of women, from nearly all of the leading causes of death. Although genetics play a role, unhealthy behavior, avoidance of health care, and making poor health-related decisions also significantly contribute to premature death and disability amongst men. Having identified that behavior change amongst men is needed, and using the observation that group dynamics have been shown to benefit in other behavior change programs (such as weight loss and alcohol cessation), we have applied the same group dynamic principle to men's health maintenance. Herein we report on patient satisfaction using this approach, and outline a plan to study its long term effect on men's health-related behavior.</p></div><div><h3>Methods</h3><p>We initiated a small group appointment program for routine male physical examinations, termed the Men's Educational Group Appointment (MEGA). It was designed to emphasize patient education about male-specific health issues, to increase patient/provider face time, and to provide an interactive environment that encourages men to learn from their and other patients’ questions. It involved a private physical exam segment, a group review of laboratory data and their significance, a didactic PowerPoint presentation using visual aids (and humor) to illustrate key elements of health issues facing men, and a lengthy question and answer session. Satisfaction surveys were administered at the conclusion of each session and compiled for analysis.</p></div><div><h3>Results/Conclusions</h3><p>We observed high patient satisfaction amongst males participating in the MEGA for routine physical exams (100% of patients responded that it was either ‘worthwhile’ (21%) or ‘extremely worthwhile’ (79%). This model appears to foster increased patient education based upon both more time with the health care providers, and the ability of patients to benefit from the questions of other patients. Our current challenge is to demonstrate its superiority to the traditional one-on-one visit with respect to information retention, follow-through with recommended health screening practices, and overall better health-related decisions.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":87486,"journal":{"name":"The journal of men's health & gender : the official journal of the International Society for Men's Health & Gender","volume":"4 3","pages":"Pages 266-270"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.jmhg.2007.06.003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75645557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, multiple linear regression models showed that a few indicators of women's empowerment were significantly associated with mortality due to injury and poisoning for both women and men. When three Baltic States with considerably higher mortality rates (Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia) were excluded from the analysis, however, only one indicator (female economic activity as a percentage of male economic activity) remained a significant predictor of men's death rates.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>These data suggest that some indicators of women's empowerment may be associated with mortality due to injury and poisoning for men, although the association was dependent on which countries were included in the analysis. Furthermore, treatment of hypogonadal men with testosterone leads almost always to unmistakable positive changes in mood, self-esteem and vitality. This testifies to the profound effects testosterone exerts on the brain and the mind. Conversely, hypogonadism and particularly the profound hypogonadism resulting from androgen deprivation treatment in men with prostate cancer, is associated with loss of vitality and mood disorders, if not depression.</p><p>Several studies have found a role for testosterone on cognition (particularly visuo-spatial abilities), mood and depression, and low testosterone values may predict the development of Alzheimer's disease. Testosterone administration to hypogonadal men supports this notion. But not all studies have been able to confirm the association between testosterone and mental functions. These discrepancies might be explained by the large variations in design, inclusion criteria with regard to threshold values of testosterone, duration of study and psychometric instruments. It is likely that men with plasma testosterone values below the lower limit of normal will benefit (most). It is presently not justified to prescribe testosterone as a primary treatment for men with impaired cognitive functioning or mood disorders. These complaints are common in elderly men, and one of the diagnostic considerations might be testing for testosterone deficiency as an etiological factor, and if, upon laboratory measurement, testosterone levels are truly hypogonadal, testosterone treatment is warranted. This probably will not only benefit mental functioning but there will be somatic benefits as well as a result of normalization of testosterone levels.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":87486,"journal":{"name":"The journal of men's health & gender : the official journal of the International Society for Men's Health & Gender","volume":"4 3","pages":"Pages 344-351"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.jmhg.2007.06.001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84108219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PCA and its treatments affect intimate aspects of a man's bodily and psychological function, aspects that only the man himself and his partner can fully appreciate. There is growing evidence that the diagnosis of PCA has important adverse psychosocial effects on both the patient and his partner. An understanding of the ways in which a patient's female partner is affected by PCA is beginning to emerge. In this review several key issues for future psychosocial research are outlined and discussed: adjusting to the challenge of the PCA diagnosis, the impact on the couples’ relationship, the dilemma of treatment choice, the desire to conceal treatment side-effects, the effect of gender on the reaction of patients and female partners, and the unique problems facing same-sex couples. Pulling these issues together, the conclusion is drawn that psychosocial interventions designed to help the couple face this ‘relationship disease’ together are the most likely to be acceptable and effective for those affected by this common cancer.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":87486,"journal":{"name":"The journal of men's health & gender : the official journal of the International Society for Men's Health & Gender","volume":"4 3","pages":"Pages 226-232"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/j.jmhg.2007.04.008","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77644881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
