Indeed, one wonders if there is anything left to say in this connection as so much has been said already. There is, however, an undoubted need to study the subject in the light of the report on the recent Nuffield Surveyl.. This report has brought to light the immense diversion of case loads and work assigned to health visitors in different parts of the country. How much of the work on which she has built her reputation needs to be continued, how much of the work which has previously been allocated to her, which indeed should never have been hers, can be taken over by other workers, how, in fact, she can best use her training and experience for the benefit of the community as a whole, is a problem which is occupying the attention of all leaders of the profession. The health visitor’s work during the past years as the visitor to all homes where there were young children has established her in a unique position in contrast to other social workers who are concerned with special or problem cases. She is the visitor and adviser in the normal home. The need to continue routine visiting of healthy children has been questioned. It would seem, however, that some contact with mothers is essential if the knowledge we have gained through recent research is to be interpreted to them. The importance of the mother/child relationship, the need for maintaining stability in all the phases of family life, beginning with the early days of marriage and the expectant family, the pre-school family, the school age family, the adolescent family and, finally, the aging family, is recognized by all workers in the public health field. It is our experience that, with the greater awareness of the importance of the psychological aspect of child","PeriodicalId":86095,"journal":{"name":"Journal. To secure positive health, we must prevent disease. In short, the emphasis should be on preventive medicine, not curative. The most important factor in prevention of disease is health education. This can be done and is being done through various channels. Health education in our training colleges and schools is improving although not yet adequate. I should like to pay a special tribute to what I feel nursery schools have done for the education of the parents of the children who attend them. More attention is being paid to health matters in our factories. The press, radio and television can, and do, help in health education and propaganda. To preach, however, is one thing; to practise, quite another. Our greatest problem to-day is not the need for further research into the cause of ill-health and disease, important although that is. The greater part of the gain, however, has been achieved by using bacteriological methods to control and check primary operations in food preparation and handling, and to demonstrate the value of good sanitary practices. Even given reliable and workable bacteriological standards, these cannot stand alone, but must be supplemented by frequent observation and inspection. This paper is an attempt to apply the findings of various bacteriologists to the rising incidence of food poisoning in this country and to suggest a remedy, where one seems possible, or a line of enquiry into the problem that might be followed with advantage.","PeriodicalId":86095,"journal":{"name":"Journal. Among the reasons given for the expense are out-of-date byelaws, lack of research, reluctance of many local authorities to take advantage of developments in sanitary engineering, and ill-considered design. Criticism has often been levelled at the fully-ventilated two-pipe system of drainage for multi-storey building shown in Fig. 1, with its requirement of four main stacks-one for soil, one for waste and two for ventilation-and an individual vent pipe between 3 inches and 12 inches from each trap to conform with byelaws. Attempts have, of course, been made to improve on this system. One method is to install separate stacks for each kind of appliance, as in Fig. 2; reducing the number of appliances connected to any one stack enables ventilation pipework to be omitted from the waste side. This has some obvious","PeriodicalId":86095,"journal":{"name":"Journal. Many of us, perhaps I might say the majority of us, have a similar difficulty in relation to general education; we accept as a fact that education is desirable, but if suddenly asked why this is so we might have to give considerable thought to the preparation of a reasoned and conclusive answer to this question. Health is not mere absence of disease; being healthy entails physical and mental accord with one’s surroundings and therefore has social as well as individual application. Not being ill is obviously not the same thing as being in bounding, vigorous health. This concept of positive health is something to aim at and carries with it the social implication of complete adjustment to one’s surroundings in the home, in the place of work and in the community generally. If we accept this as the real meaning of health it becomes evident that the emphasis will vary from civilization to civilization, from nation to nation and from community to community. The aims of the health educator towards positive health in a primitive backward tribe will not be those of the worker in Mayfair; the ultimate aim may be the same but the immediate approach quite different. There is then no universally applicable method of health teaching, the primitive community needs an approach of the infant class variety and the highly civilized community demands a type of teaching more applicable to its adult status. ’","PeriodicalId":86095,"journal":{"name":"Journal.
