It is often witnessed that whenever a person attempts or commits suicide, most of the times he/she is bought to the hospital to save his/her life. Thus, the role of health care providers in a hospital setting is very important, as this is the first point of contact with the suicide attempters. In this study, an attempt was made to assess the intervention of health care providers toward suicide attempters in Kashmir. Methodology: In-depth expert interviews were conducted with the 12 healthcare professionals (Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists and Primary Health Care Physicians) who were involved in the identification; assessment, management, and prevention of suicidal behaviour at an urban general hospital in Srinagar, Kashmir. Purposive sampling method was used based on the availability and willingness of the participants from August to November 2018. Results: The results revealed that the health care providers follow a systematic procedure i.e., prevention, intervention and postvention in dealing with suicide attempters. However, their main focus remains on the intervention within the walls of the hospital setting. Conclusion: The results of the study provides some broad understanding about the role of doctors in the treatment and management of suicide attempters that will go a long way in the management of people attempting suicide in Kashmir. The reasons for this increase arc numerous, ranging from relief from tension and fatigue, euphoria, forgetting the problems, to escape from the harsh realities of life and environment, etc. Industrial workers quite prone to these factors get easily attracted towards these substances, hence the problem of drug abuse is increasing unchecked among them (Gangrade & Gupta, 1976). The addicts and generol population generally do not take it as a serious problem as it does not disrupt their normal life and economy of the houschold. They realise the gravity of its effect only when it becomes dangerous for the family as well as to the addict himself. So far as its treatment is concerned, it is being observed that a sizable population of addicts is contacting the drug de-addiction and counselling centres run by Government through NGOs at district level and also approach qualified practitioners. However, the number of drug users who contact unauthorised and unqualified sources is not known which is certainly, according to one estimate, very large. How far these drug addicts are able to abstain themselves permanently from this menace is a question to be explored. A study conducted in Bombay by Bagadia, Shaha and Mundra (1981) revealed that patients showed a good response when followed up for 6 months to 2 years, however, longer follow up is likely to show relapses and drop-outs. Another study of one hundred and seventy eight cases of which 138 were traceable (twenty nine deaths and six absconders, five couldn't be traced anywhere) of drug addiction registered during five years between 1970 to 1974 in the Institute of Psychiatry Madurai, reports that 63% continued to take drugs regularly and 8 percent intermittently.","PeriodicalId":86089,"journal":{"name":"Journal of psychiatric social work","volume":"25 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73382198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The burden on the spouse of a depressed individual is considered to be a multi-dimensional problem and is seen in the context of its emotional, psychological, physical and economic consequences. The depressed individual’s aversive interpersonal behaviours may lead spouses to experience depression and problems in marital adjustment. Aim: To study and compare the burden and marital satisfaction among male and female spouses of patients suffering from depression. Materials & Methods: Spouses of patients were inducted from those attending the Department of Psychiatry of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh, India with their partners. A total of 60 spouses of patients with ICD-10 diagnosis of depression fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited for the study. Consecutive sampling was used for data collection. Participants were divided into two groups i.e. Male and Female. Zarit Burden Interview and Marital Satisfaction Scale were used to assess the burden and marital satisfaction respectively. Results: There was no significant difference in burden and marital satisfaction between the two genders which means both the groups are equally vulnerable and prone to develop psychiatric problems like stress, anxiety, depression. Conclusion: Considering the findings, both groups have an equal need to cater to care giving and related responsibilities. The study can be useful in implementing programs to help the spouses and cater the needs of care giving, to handle the burden productively associated with the care giving of their depressed partners, to strengthen their coping and to have a better marital life. Studies havemostly tended to focus on parental adjustment to their child’s disabilityand its correlates. There is littleresearch examining interventions that aim to improveparents’ and children’s relationship or quality of life. This study aimed to see the effectiveness of psychoeducation in increasing the level of psychological well-being and self-determination of the caregivers of children with intellectual disability (ID). Methodology: A total of 20 caregivers of children with intellectual disability were purposively selected from Central Institute of Psychiatry and Deepshika Institute of Child Development and Mental Health, Ranchi. They were assessed with General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28), Ryff’s Psychological wellbeing scale, Family Interview for Stress and Coping in Mental Retardation (FISC-MR), Social Problem Solving Inventory (SPSI-R) and Self-determination scales before giving the psychoeducation. The psychoeducational module was developed specially for the caregivers based on National Institute of Mental Health manual for Psychologists and Teachers, Counsellors manual for family intervention in mental retardation & Problem Solving therapy manual. This module was applied on them individually for the period of four weeks. The measures mentioned earlier were used again to assess the post treatment levels on the selected key caregivers. Results: Study identified significant increase in the caregiver’s psychological well-being and self-determination levels after eight sessions of psychoeducation. Conclusions: Results suggested that psycho educational intervention is effective in increasing knowledge regarding the condition and in meeting the needs of the care givers .
