In recent decades, organic food consumption has been touted as a path to food security. As such, civil society networks in Chiang Mai have been working to support the movement toward organic food. Organic food networks linking producers and consumers are critical to building food security. This research article aims to understand civil society networks' roles and working styles on organic food issues in Chiang Mai province, Thailand. The working styles and outcomes of the civil society network (CSN) are analyzed as the intermediary between food producers to urban consumers in the food system. Four CSNs in Chiang Mai were selected as the case studies and compared with Chiang Mai’s Young Farmer Group. This study, based on observation techniques and in-depth interviews with key informants, investigates the working styles of CSNs and networks of food producers. The questionnaires were distributed to consumers to study consumer knowledge and perceptions of food security issues. The focus group meetings were organized to obtain feedback from food producers, consumers, and CSN’s staff. The authors found that each CSN linked with food producer networks according to the working styles of the CSN’s staff and that the key actors in each CSN knew each other personally. CSNs can introduce organic farming to local communities. However, many CSNs are struggling to connect with urban consumers.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44330827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The country’s eastern region, which comprises four states, is more susceptible to tobacco consumption and adverse outcomes than the rest. This study explores the prevalence, regional variation, and correlates of tobacco cessation in the eastern region. This analysis is based on the National Family Health Survey (NFHS 4) data comprising 665 females and 2016 males of the 15–24 age group who tried and/or were advised to quit tobacco. In this study, tobacco cessation is considered an outcome variable, and socioeconomic characteristics are considered a predictor variable. Bivariate and regression analyses are used to correlate tobacco cessation with socioeconomic factors. Variation in tobacco cessation is noticed in the `eastern states. Self-attempted to quit tobacco is highest among males in Odisha (39.84%), whereas, in West Bengal, a higher number of females (26.89%) self-attempted to quit. Youth belonging to 20–24 years (OR = 1.19, 95% CI [0.95, 1.49], p = .604) are more likely to self-quit tobacco than those 15–19 years of age. Similarly, improving education increases tobacco cessation. Tobacco cessation is higher based on quit advice from healthcare providers than self-quitting behavior. The analysis indicates that youth tobacco consumption in eastern states is quite alarming.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47698849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty-two respondents aged 62 to 82 years and nine key informants were recruited. Bourdieu’s theory of practice was used to analyze data through thematic analysis. The main findings explore two models of traditional medicine used in the aging population to control chronic diseases and post-stroke: (1) the switch from western to traditional medicine and (2) the use of both western and traditional medicine. Moreover, traditional medicine use is influenced by beliefs about susceptibility and severity of disease, the pros and cons of traditional medicine, and beliefs about traditional medicine practitioners. This exploratory study may shed more light on the promotion of traditional medicine for health and health management for the aging population in Vietnam.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42858625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross-sectional survey design was utilized. A self-designed questionnaire was randomly administered to 621 ever-pregnant unmarried adolescents. Thirty-five in-depth interviews were purposively conducted among unmarried adolescents, skilled and unskilled healthcare providers, and caregivers. Twelve focus group discussions and four life histories were also conducted among unmarried adolescents. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and multivariate logistic regression at p ≤ .05; qualitative data were content analyzed. Poor health provider-patient relations, financial constraints, distant health facilities, and fear of the exchange of babies by health workers influenced antenatal care practices among unmarried adolescents. More than half of the respondents (68.3%) received pregnancy care from faith-based and traditional birth attendants. Antenatal care utilization from orthodox (certified medical) healthcare providers was associated with secondary school education (OR = 7.35, 95% CI [5.83-8.94]), wealthiest households (OR = 6.74, 95% CI [4.34-8.35]) and age at last pregnancy 14–16 (OR = 0.17, 95% CI [0.12-0.27]). There is a need for functional and accessible orthodox healthcare facilities and an increased awareness about antenatal care services among adolescents to reduce delays in antenatal visits and maternal-related health risks through effective policies that could lead to attitudinal change among the populace.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46436868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Government agencies and NGOs are aware of the concentration of homeless former prisoners from different states within Malaysia in Chow Kit Road because the NGOs around Chow Kit Road distribute food aid to help them. Hence, a qualitative method was employed in this study by interviewing two groups of samples, namely nine professional government officers and nine volunteer informants who serve around Chow Kit Road. Experienced government officers and volunteer informants divided the findings into two superordinate themes. The views of professional government officers lead to the formation of four sub-themes, namely the personal, social, economic, and urban infrastructure and services offered. In comparison, the superordinate themes determined by the volunteer informants included four sub-themes: economic, social, and personal factors, together with urban infrastructure and services. This study provided an overview of factors that attract these former prisoners to continue to migrate and concentrate in Chow Kit Road based on the perspectives of a professional government officer and volunteer informants.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47246835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, utilizing the health belief model (HBM) framework, this cross-sectional study aimed to assess the association between sociodemographic and social-cognitive explored factors with physical activity and COVID-19 preventive behaviors in a nationally represented sample of 871 Indonesian adults. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to assess physical activity levels. The COVID-19 preventive behaviors and the social-cognitive factors were measured using instruments adapted from the WHO-COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring and based on the HBM framework. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between the outcomes and each potential correlate, adjusted for potential confounders. The results showed that women were more likely to engage in sufficient COVID-19 preventive behaviors, while older adults were less likely to be physically active. Participants with high social-cognitive processes were also more likely to engage in sufficient COVID-19 preventive behaviors and be physically active. The perceived barrier, however, was not associated with COVID-19 preventive practices. The findings support using the HBM in understanding COVID-19 preventive and physical activity behaviors. Interventions to improve COVID-19 preventive practices in this target population should focus more on men, while physical activity promotion should focus more on older adults.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44608180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such work can lead to boredom, discouragement, and physical and mental exhaustion. Therefore, strengthening the positive ability of VHVs can help them cope with fatigue. It is essential to continue supporting VHVs; consequently, it is necessary to incorporate Eastern wisdom into healthcare provided for village health volunteers. Purposive sampling was used in this descriptive research to study the relationship between self-care behaviors by applying Eastern wisdom to support and enhance the mental strength of the VHVs. The sample consisted of 77 VHVs in Southern Thailand. Demographic data questionnaire, self-care behavior questionnaire by applying Eastern wisdom, and resilience questionnaire were used to collect data. Pearson’s correlation was used to analyze data. The relationship between self-care behavior by applying Eastern wisdom and resilience was found to have a statistically significant positive correlation (r = .246, p < .05). The relationship between self-care behavior by applying Eastern wisdom and resilience in this study was weak, but there was a positive correlation. Thus, health care providers should promote and integrate Eastern wisdom into self-care activities with VHVs.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44922315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Indonesia, the unmet need for healthcare is common for people in the lower economic group. This study aims to examine how food insecurity affects outpatient care using the indicators of food insecurity to highlight individuals with high health risks and experiencing problems with limited resources. The data used in this study consisted of 159,236 individuals representing different age ranges from the 2017 National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS) and the 2018 Village Potential Census (PODES). Data were analyzed using ivprobit to address bias due to the endogeneity in the food insecurity variables. The results indicate that a higher food insecurity score will increase the chances of not accessing modern healthcare for outpatient care when sick. Several variables like sex, types of residence, number of household members living together, access to healthcare, health insurance, social protection, and illness characteristic were also found to influence individual behavior in not utilizing modern healthcare for outpatient care. This study suggests that policymakers should pay attention to the utilization of modern healthcare, especially for outpatient care in groups experiencing food insecurity.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46470665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most common is loneliness, which affects older adults and is closely related to mental state. The purpose of this research was to analyze and compare the level of loneliness of older adults in different family types and study the differences between personal factors, family factors, and social factors of the older adults toward the loneliness of the older adults within a variety of family types. The population was 346 older adults aged 60 years and over. The analysis found that 76% of older adults in the study have low levels of loneliness. The older adults in different family types had a statistically significant difference level of loneliness. The older adults who lived alone had a higher level of loneliness than others. Factors related to the moderate level of loneliness among the older adults within different family types were not participating in family activities of a parent-child family and income inadequacy in a three-generation family. The outcome of this research could be used to promote and improve care for older adults to reduce and prevent loneliness based on their specific family types.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69522447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study examines the amount inpatient women have to pay for treatment of major diseases, re-classified into four groups as infectious, reproductive, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and disabilities & injuries, across the country to comprehend the extent of catastrophic health spending (CHS) they experienced. The study is based on India’s 75th round of the National Sample Survey (NSS), i.e., Household Social Consumption: Health (2017-2018), consisting of 26,938 inpatient women aged 12 and above from India's urban and rural areas. We examine the prevalence of the four categories of diseases by individual, household, community, and healthcare characteristics. Expenditure estimates were derived from cross-tabulation, followed by binary logistic regression to assess the association between covariates and inpatient expenditures for the diseases. Indian women are more likely to be hospitalized for infectious diseases (43%), but the burden of CHS (overall) is highest for disabilities and injuries (INR 24,414), followed by NCDs (INR 23,053). Duration of hospitalization and possession of health insurance by women indicate maximum variation with medical spending. Almost 97% of women have incurred out-of-pocket expenditure on hospitalization, from which we identify three layers of CHS. A substantial proportion of women (23 to 50%) experienced CHS, i.e., up to 0-10%, 11-30%, and >30%, which varies distinctively by place of residence and across the six regions. Covariates like age, economic status, and healthcare are highly significant and associated with disease-wise CHS thresholds. Women in India face divergent financial hardships for healthcare. Given the heterogeneity of morbidities and socio-economic characteristics, the need for women-sensitive public health services and interventions are evident.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45597035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
