As the Ministry of Religious Affairs noted, the number of divorces has increased by 9% to 408,202 in 2018 compared to the previous year. One rationale that may explain this phenomenon comes from the role of television, which has the potential to influence the opinions of society through its programs. In developing countries, including Indonesia, television is still relevant as a medium to reach a large portion of society at a low cost. Hence, this study aims to determine the role of television viewing on divorce in Indonesia. Unlike previous studies, which use qualitative data collected with in-depth interviews at the individual level, we utilize quantitative analysis based on macro data at the provincial level from Statistics Indonesia in 2018. We perform a multiple regression model using the ordinary least squares method and find statistical evidence that divorce rates are positively associated with television viewing, particularly in rural areas. From this finding, the government should regulate media by limiting the frequency and duration of soap operas and celebrity news and by promoting television stations to provide diversified content on their channel.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41495018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data were analyzed using frequency tables, proportions, Pearson’s chi-square, and multinomial logistic regression. The relative risk of using male-controlled contraception relative to not using any contraception was 3% significantly lower (arrr = 0.7, 95% CI [0.5, 1.0], p < .05) among polygamous married men than for monogamists. In comparison, the relative risk of using female-controlled contraception relative to not using any contraception was 4% significantly higher (arrr = 1.4, 95% CI [1.0, 2.0], p <.05) for polygamous married men compared to the corresponding risk for monogamists. Other factors influencing the risk of using male-controlled contraception include tertiary education (arrr = 2.8, 95% CI [1.9, 4.0], p < .05), Yoruba (arrr = 3.8, 95% CI [2.8, 5.2], p < .05), richer (arrr = 1.5, 95% CI [0.8, 1.7], p < .05), and desire for more children (arrr = 0.8, 95% CI [0.7, 0.9], p < .05), media exposure (arrr= 1.5, 95% CI [1.3, 1.7], p < .05) and the number of sexual partners in the last 12 months (arrr = 5.7, 95% CI [4.6, 7.0], p < .05). Findings suggest strengthening male-controlled contraceptive methods by sexually active married men to reduce high fertility levels.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42629674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years, the occurrence of such violence has recorded a significant increase, especially in developing countries, including India. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of IPV in India. The study also seeks to determine the demographic and socio-economic factors associated with IPV. The study utilizes the fourth-round data of the National Family Health Survey 2015–2016. Chi-square (χ2) test and binary logistic regression model were used to determine IPV-related factors. Of 62,716 married women surveyed, 30.59% were found to have suffered from IPV. The prevalence of physical, sexual, and emotional violence against married women was 26.98%, 6.45%, and 12.07%, respectively. Women belonging to the following categories were found to have a higher likelihood of experiencing IPV: (i) women with higher educational attainment than their husbands; (ii) women involved in manual work, (iii) women having more than two children, and (iv) women belonging to the Muslim community. In addition, women earning more than their partners, women practicing independent decision-making, and women with partners addicted to alcohol consumption were also at higher risk of experiencing IPV. The alarming rate of IPV in India needs urgent attention. The need of the hour is to organize context-specific and community-based IPV awareness programs. In this regard, collaboration with various stakeholders and non-government organizations may help minimize the incidence of IPV in the country.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48979092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the years, the upsurge in the unemployment rate and the necessity of economic empowerment have pushed women to adopt commercial tricycle riding as a livelihood. This article explores the perception of women as tricycle riders by passengers and commuters in Ikeja, Lagos State, southwestern Nigeria. The study is anchored on the social role theory, which argues that gender stereotype is a product of the gendered division of labor that assigns social roles to men and women based on culturally approved norms and standards. Data for the study were sourced through qualitative ethnographic approaches involving focus groups and semi-structured interviews with thirty participants (N = 30) who were purposively sampled. The authors argue that even though women are rising to the moment regarding competence and performance standards as tricycle riders, gender stereotypes constrain their acceptance and patronage in the business. We further demonstrate that unfavorable career evaluations promote bias against female tricycle riders. In this way, gender discrimination is deeply entrenched in the public transport sector in Nigeria. The study advocates for a more inclusive career culture and practices where men and women can feel valued and earn a living without discrimination and marginalization.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42097632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A cross-sectional study was conducted online in 34 Indonesian provinces on May 2–4, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 2189 respondents aged 15-year-olds and older participated in this study. The Lime survey application platform and social media distributed the questionnaires. Multiple multinomial logistic analysis was performed to calculate the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) of coping activities with anxiety levels after adjusting for age, sex, marital status, education, occupation, and homeownership. Moderate and severe anxiety was more experienced by respondents aged 15–24 years, were female, not/unmarried, had middle-high education, were getting layoff, and lived in an employer-provided residence. Spiritual activity (aOR = 0.30; 95% CI [0.10, 0.87]; p = .027), physical activities (aOR = 0.28; 95% CI [0.16, 0.50]; p < .001), and leisure activities (aOR = 0.25; 95% CI [0.14, 0.46]; p < .001) provided the best protection against severe anxiety. In contrast, those who smoked cigarettes and consumed alcohol were more likely to experience mild-to-severe anxiety (aOR = 2.77; 95% CI [1.1, 6.64]; p = .022). Interestingly, those who shared their problems with others were more likely to experience mild anxiety (OR = 1.98; 95% CI [1.52, 2.58]; p < .001). Spiritual, physical, and leisure activities are expected to be associated with mild, moderate, and severe anxiety. Promoting physical, leisure, and spiritual activities plays a vital role in the community as a coping strategy for stressful times, especially during pandemics.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44064074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, we currently lack information on the exact number of Thai-Western couples and their demographic characteristics. To address this, we conducted a study using Thailand’s 2010 Population Census to explore the scale of Thai-Western partnerships and identify some basic demographic traits of these marriages. Our findings revealed that in 2010, Thai-Western couples made up less than 1% of all married couples. Additionally, more male Westerners partnered with Thai individuals than female Westerners with Thai partners. The nationalities that predominantly formed partnerships with Thais were British, American, and German, comprising more than half of all Westerners in such unions. We also observed that approximately one-third of Westerners in these partnerships were 60 or older, indicating a significant age difference between Western men and their Thai counterparts. Furthermore, most Thai-Westerner couples reside in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42738518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This qualitative research was designed with twofold purposes in the context of Thai higher education. Firstly, to explore the impacts on university graduates’ psychosocial well-being and the support universities provided during the pandemic. Secondly, to examine gaps and develop recommendations for higher educational institutes to support students’ mental health and well-being regularly and in times of crisis. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with 23 participants, giving voice to key stakeholders: graduate students (n = 10), faculty members (n = 9), and working professionals (n = 4). Using inductive analysis, data was analyzed into two main categories and six themes. The first category reflected three themes: psychosocial challenges of students, impacts on mental health, and the support provided by universities. Themes in the second category described multi-level approaches for supporting university students. These findings substantiate the linkages between mental health support and developing a resilient workforce for the future and suggest pathways for strengthening these by collaborative participation of stakeholders in higher education.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41873810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By employing realist humanitarianism theory, this study examines the inducement of discrimination against refugees in education and the political factors that have influenced such policy choices and formulation in Bangladesh. Qualitative research involving 35 semi-structured interviews produced in-depth information on key informants' experiences, perceptions, and suggestions on refugee education in Bangladesh. This study revealed that excluding refugees from education was a politically plotted decision, and the reason for such exclusion persisted until now because prolonged discrimination against the refugees created local myths about refugees’ eligibility for their human rights to education. The findings of this study provide insights into both academic research and policy analysis in the field of refugee education by highlighting a protracted refugee situation in Bangladesh that political exclusion can create the ambiance to nullify refugees’ human rights to education. The study recommends weighing refugee voices in refugee program design, broader consultation among humanitarian agencies, and policy review to allow refugees to receive formal, official education.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44926961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study seeks to develop a spatial model using the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) approach to identify the spatial pattern of COVID-19 vaccination and the factors influencing it in Java. The study adopts an ecological design with a spatial approach, encompassing 118 districts/cities. The dataset used in this research focuses on the coverage of COVID-19 vaccination for the second dose, spanning from March 15, 2021, to January 11, 2022. Spatial statistical techniques such as spatial autocorrelation and Geographically Weighted Regression were employed to analyze the data. The findings reveal that the Human Development Index, unemployment rate, and housing conditions significantly impact the spatial distribution of COVID-19 vaccine coverage, indicating the presence of spatial interaction among regions. Socioeconomic factors emerged as key variables influencing the study outcomes. Given that enhancing the community's economy requires time, interventions tailored to the prevailing conditions are necessary. Therefore, interventions to increase COVID-19 vaccine coverage should prioritize health promotion efforts, particularly in areas with low socioeconomic conditions.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44411740","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to provide estimates of the prevalence of hypertension, and pre-hypertension, in India. Furthermore, it identifies lifestyle modifications to reduce hypertension in age groups of 45–59 and 60+. This study uses data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India, 2017–2018, which includes information on 31,197 adults (45–59) and 28,567 older adults (60+). Descriptive, multivariate, and multinomial regression analyses have been performed to ascertain the prevalence and correlation of socioeconomic characteristics and related risk factors. The finding of this study suggests that individuals in the 60+ age group have a higher prevalence of hypertension. In contrast, a higher prevalence of pre-hypertension can be seen in the 45–59 age group. Gender, place of residence, living arrangement MPCE quintile, family history of hypertension, body mass index, self-rated health, and alcohol consumption are significantly associated with pre-hypertension and hypertension. There is a need for public awareness and control since people with age 45–59 are less aware of hypertension; otherwise, unintentionally, they can develop more risk with aging. Methods of modifying one’s lifestyle and dietary changes have a significant impact on the prevention of hypertension; that is why there is a great need for people to be aware of all these.","PeriodicalId":85846,"journal":{"name":"Warasan prachakon lae sangkhom = Journal of population and social studies","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41519335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
