{"title":"A Study of a Medieval Persian Hagiography and Interactions Between Sufis and Christians in Rum and Upper Mesopotamia","authors":"L. Ridgeon","doi":"10.1353/tmr.2022.0000","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/tmr.2022.0000","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:The anonymous thirteenth century hagiography that describes the virtues of Awhad al-Din Kirmani (d. 1238), one of the most celebrated (and criticised) Persian Sufis of the medieval period, and how it depicts Muslim interactions with Christians is the focus of this study. Hagiographical writing has been viewed with suspicion by many for being less than an accurate portrayal of historical events, however, such a view needs to be qualified, especially if the hagiography was written within a short space of time of the death of the subject. Such literature is intrinsically useful because it depicts the worldview of the subject in an ideal fashion, thereby presenting the world as it should be. This particular hagiography should be, therefore, of vital interest for researchers investigating the Islamisation of Anatolia (or more specifically, the region around Rum and Upper Mesopotamia, where Kirmani propagated his Sufi worldview). The article commences with a survey of Muslim-Christian relations during the time in question, and it pays particular attention to how Sufis perceived Christians and Christianity. Subsequent to this contextualisation, the article utilises the hagiography about Kirmani, which has only recently been translated from the Persian into English, and for this reason has received scant scholarly concern. The episodes of the hagiography that deal with Christians and Christianity are analysed with reference to the existing customs and conventions of the times in an attempt to discover the author’s view of Sufi interactions with Christians. The hagiography demonstrates neither a Muslim nor a Sufi demonization of Christians, yet nor does it present a completely harmonious relationship of co-existence. This may be somewhat surprising given that the period was one of Islamic expansion in the region, when the memories of the Crusades were still very raw. This ambivalence may be explained by the very different existence of Christian denomination in the region and how they were perceived, and also by the relative lack of importance that such Sufi writing accorded to the topic.","PeriodicalId":85753,"journal":{"name":"The Maghreb review. L’augmentation des intérêts économiques privés et des intérêts politiques du gouvernement espagnol, surtout après la guerre d’Afrique de 1860, a entraîné l’importance du consulat de Mogador et la désignation de consuls espagnols.L’application du traité de 1860 a donné aux informations des consuls de Mogador une importance très notable puisqu’ils avaient une connaissance de tout ce qui se passait. Hadot contended that ancient philosophy was a way of life, and I argue that it continued to be so in the medieval Jewish and Islamic forms of Peripateticism. The latter contributed to the diversification of philosophical ways of life (advocated by the ancients) by adapting philosophy and Abrahamic prophecy. I also argue that the later European Peripatetics, led by Thomas Aquinas, destabilize their predecessors’ hard-won adaptation of philosophy and religion and contribute to the shaping of modern philosophy as an academic enterprise (along with the associated marginalization of philosophy as a way of life).","PeriodicalId":85753,"journal":{"name":"The Maghreb review. Assal","doi":"10.1353/tmr.2009.0008","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/tmr.2009.0008","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract:As the title of this article suggests, the question of identity is an old problem in the Sudan and representes a challenge that has not been settled hitherto. While debates about Sudan’s identity ostensibly started at the dawn of independence, focusing primarily, on the one hand, on whether the Sudan should unite with Egypt or not and, on the other, whether the Sudan should be part of Africa or the Arab world, the challenge is still enormous and difficult choices must be made if the quest is for a peaceful and united Sudan. Most of the discussions that followed independence pursued a political perspective that was mostly macro in perspective. The way the question of identity was tackled left too many issues that were swept under the rug of Arabism and Africanism. One dimension that was not given sufficient attention is how identity is played out at the bottom; how the Sudanese play out their identities at micro levels, and how the deterioration in economic and political conditions in the country contribute to divisive identifications exemplified by what we saw during the civil war in the south and in Darfur at the present time. The way the question of identity was discussed seemed to be an elite affair, bearing little attention to what really matters to people. It is the disregard of what matters to people that underlies the current crisis that is tearing the country apart. A new dimension of identity politics is in the making in the Sudan. This is represented by multiple peripheral insurgencies that employ macro political rhetoric in making claims about marginalization and absence of equity. The new dimension is also represented by the devolution of crisis to the most micro levels of Sudanese society. It is argued in this article that the problem of identity in the Sudan is basically one of lack of justice more than a question of whether the country is Arab, African or something else. In putting this argument forward, the paper provides a critical overview of positions that debate the question of identity in the Sudan. The article emphasizes the contexuality of identification, from an anthropological perspective, and links this to resource use and access. It is suggested that unity in diversity or critical multiculturalism could be a workable modality if the objective is to surpass the riddle of identity conflict in the Sudan.","PeriodicalId":85753,"journal":{"name":"The Maghreb review.
