They are higher, and rising faster, amongst people growing up and living in deprivation. These patterns raise potential concerns about both market failures and equity. There is much that policy can do to address these concerns. However, policy can also do harm if it is poorly targeted or has unintended consequences. In order to design effective policies we need an understanding of who we are trying to target, and for what reasons. This paper provides an overview of some of the evidence, and some recent policy initiatives.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84465822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis must be based on a dynamic approach to the economics of public policy, set in a complex, imperfect and uncertain world. The economics of climate change, and further, economics more broadly, must change to respond to the challenge of how to foster rapid transformation. It is time for economics and economists to step up.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76254172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the extent to which the vertical market structure affects the tax pass-through —which might be particularly relevant in the presence of the double marginalisation problem— is an unexplored question. Using a confidential dataset of gas station contracts with a major Spanish refiner, in combination with their retail fuel prices and characteristics, we document that the pass-through of a tax onto prices is about 38 percent higher in vertically-integrated gas stations than in independent ones. Our estimates allow us to assess the impact on government revenue and emissions under different counterfactual market scenarios.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"76 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86457478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We analyse the effects of the SA using historical data on mortality rates, pistol permits, and citations for illegal carrying. Our analysis of pistol permits and citations reveal clear initial effects of the SA on gun-related behaviours. Using synthetic control and difference-in-differences methodologies, our main analyses show no effects on overall homicide rates, evidence of a reduction in overall suicide rates, and strong evidence of a large and sustained decrease in gun-related suicide rates.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87906799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We test that implication in a market whose participants have the traits that behavioural economics suggests should make it hardest to find evidence of maximisation: the market for panhandling at Metrorail stations in Washington, DC. We find that stations with more panhandling opportunities attract more panhandlers and that cross-station differences in hourly panhandling receipts are statistically indistinguishable from zero. Panhandling rates of return thus tend toward equality. Extreme ‘behavioural’ traits do not prevent maximisation in this market.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"48 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73432182","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Remittances to Nepal rose dramatically in response to the earthquake by 20.9 percent in 2015 versus 3.2 percent in 2014. There is also a correlation between the level of remittance and hardship. The paper uses inflation as an indicator of ‘Financial Hardship’ to analyse the role of altruistic motives as a determinant of inflow of remittances. When prices of goods and services increase in the home country, the workers send more money to support their families. The Engel-Granger cointegration test is used to assess the short-run and the long-run relationship between inflation and remittances. Inflation does not affect remittances in the short run, however, there is the long-run relationship between remittances and inflation. It is confirmed that financial hardship determines the remittance inflow in Nepal.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"16 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81981510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article intends to explore the effect of inflation, exchange rate, GDP, FDI and GCE on trade balance of South Asian countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Data were obtained from, World Development Indicators from 2001 to 2019 published by World Bank. Initaly, the trend of all variables was monitored using graphs. Then, fixed effect model was applied as suggested by Hausman test in which only exchage rate was found significantly negatively related with trade balance. Due to serial correlation problem with fixed effect mode, data were further analysed through panel ARDL / PMG and found the evidences of long-run relationship among the variables. It was also found that inflation, exchange rate, and GDP had significant positive relationship with trade balance in long-run whereas GCE had significant negative impact on it. Interestingly, FDI did not have significant contribution on trade balance in long-run. None of variables were found to be significant in short run. However, all selected variables affected signifcantly to trade balance in short-run while testing cross-section wise. Finding of this research has an important implication to South Asian countries for making concensus in desiging common currency to fight against the growing concern of trade deficit in the region.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"66 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85786605","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, this study uses the biggest panel data set in this literature covering the period of 1985-2009. The results show that the impact of trade liberalization on economic growth differs based on the income levels of the developing countries. As indicated by the estimated results, the lower-middle-income countries, on average, benefit up to 3.45 percent points more compared to other developing countries from the trade liberalization. This finding makes a strong case for a clear departure from the ‘Washington Consensus’ approach and claims that trade liberalization with the same priority to all developing countries does not ensure economic growth. Also,  the findings strongly suggest considering the stage of economic development of the developing countries while recommending their trade policy reforms.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"60 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88628058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of this article is to analyse the impact of COVID-19 in the economy of South Korea. The article also looks at the various economic packages introduced by the government of South Korea to protect the people particularlylow-income families, informal-sector employees, part-timers, women, and the disabled. The article concludes that the country's response tools and strategies in containing COVID-19 have been exemplary in the global community. The economic packages have been successful in creating jobs, boosting consumption and promoting investment. The modality of proper and effective cooperation and coordination among the levels of government and between the public and private sector played the vital role.","PeriodicalId":85686,"journal":{"name":"The Economic journal of Nepal","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75048271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
