They bring together disciplines from widely differing backgrounds and use different clinical methods. Can the differences between these two professions be used to enhance each other's work, or is the divide so great that they must remain estranged under the same roof? The work of both GPs and counsellors bridges the domains of health and illness and they frequently share patients and clients. This is the common ground which makes possible the creative use of their differences. In this paper, using clinical examples, we explore these differences and how they offer opportunities for each to view their own work in a different light. We propose that it is the very difference between GPs and counsellors in their method and philosophy which encourages useful cross-fertilization and leads to unexpected change.","PeriodicalId":85362,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic counselling","volume":"6 1","pages":"281 - 300"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13533330050132080","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59786790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Open Space 开放空间

{"title":"Open Space","authors":"","doi":"10.1080/135333300362882","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1080/135333300362882","url":null,"abstract":"Using City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR) criteria, an analysis of open space is conducted to determine whether a proposed action would have either a direct or indirect impact on area open spaces. A direct effect on an open space would occur if the proposed action would cause the physical loss of public open space; change the use of an open space so that it no longer serves the same user population; limit public access to an open space; or cause increased noise or air pollutant emissions, odors, or shadows that would affect its usefulness, whether on a permanent or temporary basis. An indirect impact would occur if the proposed action would overtax available open space. According to the CEQR Technical Manual, an initial quantitative open space assessment may be useful to determine if a detailed open space analysis is necessary, or whether the open space assessment can be targeted to a particular user group. This initial assessment calculates an open space ratio by relating the existing residential and non-residential populations to the total open space in the study area. It then compares that ratio with the open space ratio in the future with the proposed action. If there is a decrease in the open space ratio that would approach or exceed 5 percent, or if the study area exhibits a low open space ratio from the onset (indicating a shortfall of open spaces), a detailed analysis is warranted. The detailed analysis examines passive and active open space resources available to both residents and non-residents (e.g., daily workers and visitors) within study areas delineated in accordance with the CEQR Technical Manual.","PeriodicalId":85362,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic counselling","volume":"6 1","pages":"101 - 101"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/135333300362882","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59787023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research uses three interrelated studies: a survey by questionnaire of twenty couples (how they were selected as subjects is not clear); interviews from a sample of people ‘from a broad range of backgrounds’ and material from the authors’ clinical work and investigations, focusing on ten couples (the criteria for selecting these are not described) (p. 6). Its intention is to contribute some evidence to show how gender inequality may affect intimate heterosexual relationships, especially sexuality (p. 1). In so doing, the authors claim to build on and challenge assumptions about the problems faced by couples (p. 2) and in this they succeed. Power they deŽne, following Weber (1947), as ‘the probability that one actor will be able to realise his own objectives even against opposition from others with whom he is in a social relationship’ (p. 11) and political as power-structured relationships, arrangements whereby one group of persons is controlled by another’ (Millet 1997: p. 1). These deŽnitions seem curiously detached from the life of couple relationships. Neither the nature nor essence of coupleness is described nor what constitutes a sexual relationship: perhaps the deŽnitions are to be taken for granted. The relevant literature is reviewed, arguments and opinions presented, research and experience in therapy explored, in eight chapters, some with a useful summary. Appendices give further information about the research work. A hypothesis central to the research was that a frequently observed pattern of sexual interaction – female reluctance/male demand – would be more likely to occur in couples where there is a clear inequality of power. ‘More speciŽcally we reasoned that this would be more likely in cases where the woman was Žnancially dependent on her partner’ (p. 89). In their Žnal conclusions the authors comment: ‘We cannot claim to have shown that Žnancial equality, and more general equality or a relative balance of power in relationships, is associated with greater happiness and satisfaction for both partners, but it does look that way.’ Staying with the authors from their statements of aims and intentions to chapter summaries and Žnal conclusions is at times a dauntBOOK REVIEWS","PeriodicalId":85362,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic counselling","volume":"6 1","pages":"259 - 261"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/135333300407611","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59787080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown how beginnings determine the end and how important it is at assessment which mode is chosen for clients. A description is given of how the time-limited practitioner, who pursues a modest, focused goal, uses planned endings as a valuable tool, while the long-term open-ended counsellor grapples with problems of when to end and how much is enough, with difficult notions of dependence which complicate the issue of termination and with the participant's universal wish to have a perfect ending. Finally, there is an attempt at discussing post-termination issues of outcome, evaluation and research which focus on questions of what works, who needs what, and which treatment is best for whom, while still seeking valid measures for defining improvement, establishing psychic change and long-lasting effects, and for ensuring reliable standards of evidence-based practice.","PeriodicalId":85362,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic counselling","volume":"6 1","pages":"301 - 317"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13533330050132099","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59787479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though the word Teshuvah has an honourable and well-deŽned place within the Jewish tradition and the concept of repentance can be found in most other religions, it is by no means only a religious concept. Repentance belongs to man and is closely related to the concept of growth and normal human development. In the language of psychology there is a much-used concept which resonates quite closely with the idea of repentance and it is the word reparation – reparation is usually opposed to guilt. When we think of reparation we are referring to an attempt to make better something that we have damaged or that has been damaged. As we live our lives we cannot help destroying as well as creating. These creative and destructive forces are mirrored in our minds, in our thoughts, in our feelings and in our actions. This is not just true of fully developed adults, you can see this very same phenomenon in very tiny babies. If one looks carefully at a baby over a protracted period one can notice its changes of moods in its relation to itself, to the breast and to his mother. As the infant grows, his mind and awareness expands gradually taking in more and more of the surrounding world. If we take a snapshot of a child in the kindergarten, we will notice these creative and destructive forces in operation quite clearly. I have also published earlier writings by both Joan and Neville Symington which I regard as excellent. I therefore took on the job of reviewing this book with a real anticipation of beneŽting from their thinking about Bion. However, as I began to read it, I quickly became bewildered and uncomfortable. Bion’s work is not easy of access. One often feels after reading and re-reading an essay or book of his that one simply could not tell someone else what it said, while at the same time feeling that one has taken in something important. There is a feeling of being inward with and changed by something profound which one cannot articulate. There are not many expositions of Bion’s work, but there are a few, and only one of them, Gérard Bléandonu’s Wilfred Bion: His Life and Works 1897–1979, is mentioned by the Symingtons; they see it as complementary to their book. I found this odd, since with such an opaque writer one needs all the help one can get. I was particularly surprised that they nowhere draw on R. D. Hinshelwood’s A Dictionary of Kleinian Thought (where, among many examples, there is a Žne exposition of how Bion elevated ‘containercontained’ into a whole theory of human nature), Donald Meltzer’s extensive writings on Bion (e.g., The Clinical SigniŽcance of the Work of Bion (1988) and Studies in Extended Metapsychology: Clinical Applications of Bion’s Ideas (1986)), those of Meg Harris Williams (1985) or (particularly since they profess to focus on the clinical) PSYCHODYNAMIC COUNSELLING 6.2 MAY 2000","PeriodicalId":85362,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic counselling","volume":"6 1","pages":"243 - 250"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/135333300407585","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59787002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eleven of those years were spent training and working as a psychodynamic counsellor and as clinical director of communitybased counselling and psychotherapy centres. I felt as well prepared as I could be for the return. I had specialized in working clinically with Irish women, I had spoken about that work at conferences, presented papers, one on the effect of an external peace process on the internal world of a Northern Irish client and, most recently, constructed a psychoanalytic critique of the prison protests and hunger strikes of the late 1970s and early 1980s. In addition to my clinical work and writing I maintained contact with Northern Ireland and returned, as most exiles do, three or four times per year. Therefore my work, and my personal and social contacts with what has always been thought of and referred to as ‘home’, facilitated the development and holding of what Edward Said has described as a ‘double perspective’. Since moving back, I have attempted to hold onto, and to expand, the double perspective and to apply it to the rapidly changing and emerging political scene in Belfast. This meant that half of the degree consisted of learning to translate Old English, reading and translating the literary works of that time, studying the development of the English language, as well as studying Middle English language and literature. I thoroughly disliked Old English. I had undertaken the degree without fully realizing the extent of this part of the course. While I found the history and development of the language fascinating, I had neither the ability to understand easily nor the interest or humility to summon the determination to work at Old English. Furthermore, the nature of Old English literature, all accounts of early battles and the exploits of Beowulf Žghting the monster Grendel in the mead hall, left me cold. It seemed a cold world, a world of men and Žghting with no human interest (no women, in fact), and, as Alice said of the book her sister was reading, ‘no pictures and no conversations in it’. But when Middle English arrived on the scene things looked up. For one thing the language was more intelligible to a twentiethcentury person. Chaucer was writing in the early version of the language which was to become standard English. But the subject matter had changed too. This also was recognizable to a twentiethcentury person. Individual characters, love, sex and women had entered into it. In writing a ‘frame-story’, that is a series of tales within an enclosing narrative, Chaucer is sometimes suggested to be looking backward to the Decameron, Ovid’s Metamorphoses or The Thousand and One Nights. However, I think what is equally important is the modernness of The Canterbury Tales.
