I shall unpack some of the complexities in the notions of culture and identity to show that they are not the monolithic self-evident natural categories that they are often taken to be. I will do this primarily by focusing on the function of cultural difference rather than the usual procedure of focusing on the differences in the contents of cultures. Although the subject matter of this paper is not drawn directly from the clinical sphere, the contention is that it is pertinent to it none the less.","PeriodicalId":85362,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic counselling","volume":"5 1","pages":"161-171"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13533339908402532","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59789212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Greek myth of Pandora's box is explored within the context of unravelling cultural meanings and collective experience that find analogues in prototype figures. The case material presented illustrates the functional aspects of the body as recorder of transmission suggesting devaluation of the feminine. The practical aspects of translating into words the explosive bodily expressions in the therapeutic process are presented.","PeriodicalId":85362,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic counselling","volume":"1 1","pages":"173-191"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13533339908402533","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59789268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are often people who can easily understand the clients' experiences, which creates interesting and potent therapeutic dynamics. They can offer a great deal of support to the person, but often with the high risk of over-identification. This paper is an attempt to examine from the therapist's perspective the complex dynamics involved in working with refugee clients. It is a collection of thoughts and feelings expressed in psychotherapeutic and supervisory work by different types of refugee mental health workers. It is an attempt to understand the therapeutic relationship further by focusing on the therapist's psychological response to the client. The paper will outline briefly some of the common themes reported by refugees, but the primary aim is to focus on the therapist's countertransference f...","PeriodicalId":85362,"journal":{"name":"Psychodynamic counselling","volume":"5 1","pages":"219-230"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/13533339908402536","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59789320","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
