It has been shown to be a useful component of a full model of age-specific fertility rates (Coale and Trussell 1974) and has been employed in several procedures for estimating fertility (Coale et al. 1975) and mortality (Trussell 1975; Hill and Trussell 1977) from inaccurate and incomplete data. This model has also proved to be a useful descriptive tool in examining whether fertility is natural (Barclay et al. 1976; Trussell 1977) in the sense of Henry (1961) in interpolating five-year rates to obtain single-year rates and in tracing the time sequence of control of fertility (Trussell 1974; Knodel 1977). This latter use has induced us to propose a standard technique for estimating the parameters of the model so that results quoted by different investigators would be comparable. The development of modern contraceptive techniques coincided with the development of large national programs designed to reduce the fertility of the general population, and literature is presented on each of the several evaluation methods that have been used to examine program-induced changes in 1 or more fertility measures. 2 methods deal with data on individuals - births averted among acceptors and individual matching; the latter compares the fertility experience of acceptors and matched non-acceptors. A different class of methods is aggregated methods. Either areas and areal variables are the focus of the analysis proceeds with measures on general subgroups identified by such factors as residence, age, or marital status. The aggregate methods are multiple regression, program experiemnts, matching of areas, correspondence between program activity and fertility change, decomposition, and simulation. The disparity in methods has conspired with large differences in programs, data sets, and investigator interests to produce serious problems of non-comparability in results.","PeriodicalId":85320,"journal":{"name":"Population index","volume":"44 1 1","pages":"8-27"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1978-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2307/2735463","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69077987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A search of the library literature indicated that such a list was not in existence. Neither the Monthly Checklist of State Publications nor the Public As air s Information Service Bulletin contain complete listings of the state vital statistics reports. It was felt that it would be helpful to have the titles of these documents collected in one list. The United States vital statistics summaries have a time lag of three to five years at the present time. State reports often have more current data and contain information that is not available in the national compilations. State vital statistics can be valuable sources of data for the user.","PeriodicalId":85320,"journal":{"name":"Population index","volume":"43 4 1","pages":"611-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1977-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.2307/2735624","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69078047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
