New study on child survival. 儿童生存的新研究。

{"title":"New study on child survival.","authors":"","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Family planning can save lives of children and benefit the health of mothers, according to a study published recently by the UN Population Division. Entitled \"The Health Rationale of Family Planning: Timing of Births and Child Survival,\" the study finds that survival of children can be improved through delaying child-bearing at least until the mother reaches age 18 and possibly age 20, and more especially through achieving birth intervals of at least two years. Those survival benefits are quite considerable, it states, and are likely to be complemented by wider health benefits for the child. For the health of the mother, the benefits lie in avoidance of the repeated risk of pregnancy and birth. The study encompasses over 280,000 births and nearly 35,000 deaths before age five in 25 developing countries. It recommends that family planning programs should highlight the importance of the appropriate timing of births and supply methods to achieve better spacing of births. Health programs should also encourage breast-feeding, not just to improve the survival and nutritional chances of the current child, but also to delay the next pregnancy and thus increase the survival chances of both the existing and the next child.
","PeriodicalId":85319,"journal":{"name":"Population headliners","volume":" 239","pages":"3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22038173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Studies on quinacrine under way.","authors":"","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

Family Health International (FHI) recently announced that it is carrying out studies on a drug called quinacrine to determine whether it has potential as a safe, non-surgical method for female sterilization. The drug, long used for the prevention and treatment of malaria and other parasitic diseases, works by blocking the fallopian tubes. The method is permanent and non-reversible, according to FHI. Stated Dr. Theodore M. King, FHI president and chief operating officer: \"Extensive data exist showing that quinacrine has great promise as a non-surgical method; however, questions about the drug's toxicity, potential carcinogenicity and teratogenicity remain unanswered.\" From 1989 through 1992, 31,781 sterilizations were performed in Viet Nam. A randomly selected sample of 1800 of the Vietnamese women who were sterilized by this method is currently being studied. The sterilizations were halted recently following controversy over the safety of the drug. Researchers are comparing the perceptions and experiences of quinacrine recipients with those of women who use IUDs, the only contraceptive that has been widely used in that country. In addition to obtaining data on health-related outcomes, such as complications, side-effects and menstrual pattern changes, FHI researchers are asking women about factors that influenced their decisions to use either method and the impact of quinacrine sterilization on other aspects of their lives.
","PeriodicalId":85319,"journal":{"name":"Population headliners","volume":" 233","pages":"4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22015621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Association installs condom machine. 协会安装安全套机。
Population headliners Pub Date : 1994-08-01
{"title":"Association installs condom machine.","authors":"","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

On the occasion of World Population Day (11 July), India installed its first condom vending machine. The machine was inaugurated by Mr. Eruch Lala, an official of the Family Planning Association of India, as part of the association's campaign to help the country curb its rapid population growth rate and stem the spread of AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome). Each condom, called sangam (\"union\" in English) costs Rupees 2 (about 6.5 US cents). The machine is located at a textile mill in Bombay. The Association said it would install at least 60 such machines in Bombay over the coming months. \"A psychological advantage of the machine is that the user need not personally meet the dispenser and can collect a condom without any embarrassment,\" Mr. Lala said. \"The machine is expected to promote efforts at curbing population growth and prevent the spread of AIDS,\" he said. In a separate report, AIDS has been found to be racing through India just eight years after the first case was detected. Prostitutes, drug addicts and untested blood supplies are the conduits. More than half of the prostitutes in cities such as Bombay have HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), which causes AIDS. The truck drivers and itinerant workers they serve carry it to their own villages, according to the report by Mr. Thomas Wagner writing for the Associated Press. There are 43 million cases of sexually transmitted diseases reported each year in the country, according to the report. The HIV virus has been reported in all 25 states of India. Although the AIDS pandemic came to India later than most large countries, the National AIDS Control Organization estimates there are 1.62 million cases in the population, up 60% from 1993, according to the report. \"AIDS is no longer just a problem of high-risk groups; it has spread to every area of India,\" Dr. P.R. Das Gupta of the national AIDS agency said in an interview. \"So many people are migrating from their villages in search of jobs that this epidemic is spreading very fast.\"
","PeriodicalId":85319,"journal":{"name":"Population headliners","volume":" 233","pages":"2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22015617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Iran records lower growth rate. 伊朗的增长率较低。
Population headliners Pub Date : 1994-08-01
{"title":"Iran records lower growth rate.","authors":"","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"

The population growth rate in the Islamic Republic of Iran has fallen to 1.8%, according to the Deputy Minister of Health, Treatment and Medical Training, Dr. H. Malek Afzali. The country's total population exceeds 64 million, with a population growth rate of 3%, according to the 1994 ESCAP Population Data Sheet. Dr. Malek Afzali said that, in 50,000 families surveyed from 22 May to 21 June 1994, the birth rate stood at 23 per 1000 and the mortality rate at 5 per 1000. He added that the number of births throughout the country in the year that ended on 21 March stood at 1,385,000, down from 2.2 million in the years before 1993. He said that the only thing to worry about in the growth of the country's population is the high number of people under 15 years of age, which is about 26 million. The present population under the age of 15 would make up 13 million couples within the next few years and, if they choose to have two children each, the country's population will increase by 26 million, he said. The Deputy Health Minister proposed that, in order to tackle the problem, training courses in family planning be set up for the young population. Later, on the occasion of World Population Day (11 July), the Director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, Dr. Ali Larijani, emphasized the important role that radio and television could play to increase public knowledge and awareness through broadcasting programs on population growth and family planning.
","PeriodicalId":85319,"journal":{"name":"Population headliners","volume":" 233","pages":"3"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1994-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"22015620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
