This study aimed to identify the risk factors at presentation to predict intensive care unit (ICU) admissions. Materials & Methods: This retrospective observational study recruited 188 confirmed laboratory COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized in Jidhafs Maternity Hospital (JMH) from 1st June to 5th July 2020. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to Explore risk factors associated with the increased risk of ICU admission. Results: The study revealed that older age (>60 years old) (16[38.1%], P=0.044), male gender (30 [40.0%], P=0.000) were significantly associated with the increased risk of ICU admissions. The most prevalent symptoms in admission were myalgia (13[40.6%], P=0.035), fever (39[34.2%], P=0.002) and cough (37[31.4%], P=0.032). In addition, raised serum level of alanine amino-transferase (ALAT) (34.7% vs. 20.7%, P=0.033), D-dimers (30.7% vs 12.2%, P=0.012), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) (31.6% vs 0.0%, P=0.025) and ferritin (37.7% vs 16.7%, P=0.011) found to be important predictor of ICU admission. Conclusion: The finding indicates that older age, male gender, with increased alanine transferase (ALT), increased lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), high D-dimer and high ferritin was associated with an increased risk of ICU admissions. Identification of such factors will help to detect people who are more likely to develop severe COVID-19 disease and will help physicians to determine if patients need regular health care or ICU admission. Patients’ experience differs from patients’ satisfaction in which the former tests the interaction that patients have with the healthcare system in the ideal way, rather than patients’ expectation from the encounter. There are limited studies in the Middle East region regarding patients’ experience. Objective: The aim of the study was to establish a cornerstone for patients’ experience in primary healthcare centers in Bahrain. Methods: The study was a cross-sectional one where a validated questionnaire consisting of 10 questions was used. A sample of 50 patients was taken from each of the ten randomly selected healthcare centers. The patients were approached after ending their consultation at the general clinics. A total of 502 patients participated and their response was analyzed and included in the final results. Results: Patients’ experience in primary healthcare centers in Bahrain scored a mean of 42.4 out of 50, 84.8%. More than 70% of the responders answered the questions as very good and excellent. In terms of statistical significance, the timing of the consultation, nationality, and consultation fees yielded a p-value of 0.017, 0.011, and 0.005, respectively. On the other hand, results of patients’ experience scores regarding patients’ gender, doctors’ gender, age, education level, and marital status were statistically not significant. This disease is probably the commonest autoimmune encephalitis predominantly affecting children and young adults. It has a higher incidence among young females. Patients manifest with a constellation of symptoms including psychosis, dyskinesia, and seizures. Antibodies against NR1/NR2 heteromers of the NMDAR glutamate receptor mediate this type of encephalitis. Patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis might have underlying tumors, which are typically teratomas. Exploring for occult tumor and resection is crucial in management. First-tier immunotherapy include steroids, intravenous immunoglobulin and plasma exchange, while rituximab and cyclophosphamide are frequently used as second-tier immunotherapy. Around 80% of patients achieve almost complete recovery, however some patients suffer from cognitive deficits or death. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can lead to better recovery and outcome. The unique feature of this disease reflects the intimate relationship between psychiatry and neurology. In this article, we describe the clinical phenotype and outcome of four affected children from Bahrain.","PeriodicalId":85027,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Bahrain Medical Society = Majallat Jam'iyat al-Atibba' al-Bahrayniyah","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69075140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Bahrain, there are limited data regarding thoroughness and completeness of the current communicable diseases reporting system. Objective: To identify reasons for noncompliance with reporting of notifiable communicable diseases by primary health care physicians practicing in the Ministry of Health (MoH) primary health care centers. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Two hundred and forty-one self-administered questionnaires were distributed to all primary health care physicians practicing in all primary care health centers of the Ministry of Health. The questionnaires included items regarding socio-demographic and practice-related characteristics, self-reported practice related to communicable diseases reporting and reasons for noncompliance with reporting requirements. Results: The response rate was 93%; the mean age of the respondents was 43 ±8.36 years. The period of experience in clinical practice ranged from 1 to 35 years with a mean of 12.84 ± 7.86 years. Lack of feedback on notified cases, forgot to notify, and not sure of diagnosis were cited by more than half of the physicians as reasons for noncompliance with communicable diseases reporting. Conclusion: The findings suggest that there are several reasons for noncompliance with reporting requirements. Revising the current notification procedure to resolve some of the reasons is vital to enhance communicable diseases reporting in Bahrain.","PeriodicalId":85027,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Bahrain Medical Society = Majallat Jam'iyat al-Atibba' al-Bahrayniyah","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69073940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
