We explored the aging of a thermoreversible gel which is crosslinked by aggregates (clusters) of the stickers and observed a dramatic increase of their lifetime with aging. We find that the observed aging is the result of structural reorganization of the network: the number of crosslinks decreases with time as small clusters disintegrate and their stickers are reabsorbed by large clusters that grow and become more stable by forming additional intramolecular associations between their stickers.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-02-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75295149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For all processes: compaction curves ''density vs. pressure'' of the powder compact are calculated, the elastic and the plastic parts are extracted from the total deformation, the body elastic moduli are determined within the isotropic solid approximation. The inadequacy of the isotropy approximation is established. The nanopowder yield surface is constructed in the space of stress tensor invariants. The inapplicability of the traditional associated flow rule for description of oxide nanopowders compaction processes is revealed. An alternative flow rule is suggested.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76285274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate the evolution of stress as a function of strain for different shear rates, $dot{gamma}$, and temperatures. The stress-strain relation displays a pronounced maximum at the yielding point; the height of this maximum, $sigma_text{p}$, increases via a power law with an increasing shear range and tends to saturate to a finite value if the limit shear rate goes to zero (at least within the considered temperature range). Interestingly, this behaviour can be captured by the Herschel-Bulkley type model which, for a given temperature, allows us to predict a static yield stress $sigma^{0}_text{p}$ (in the shear rate tending to zero limit), a characteristic timescale $tau_text{c}$, and the exponent $alpha$ of the above-mentioned power-law decay of the $sigma_text{p}$ at high shear rates. Furthermore, for different temperatures, the $sigma_text{p}$ can be scaled as functions of $dot{gamma}$ onto a single master curve when scaled by corresponding $tau_text{c}$ and ${sigma}_text{p}^{0}$. Moreover, for a given shear rate, $sigma_text{p}$ displays a logarithmic dependence on temperature. Again, the $sigma_text{p}{-}T$ curves for different shear rates can be scaled on a single logarithmic master curve when scaled by a corresponding fitting parameters.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"17 3 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83152196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We characterize the system behavior as it is energized through a progressive increase in the bath's vibrational acceleration. Depending on the number of drops, the onset of motion of the lattice may take the form of either out-of-phase oscillations or a striking solitary wave-like instability. Theoretical modeling demonstrates that these behaviors may be attributed to different bifurcations at the onset of instability. The results presented here demonstrate the potential and utility of the walking droplet system as a platform for investigating wave-mediated, inertial, non-equilibrium particle dynamics at the macroscale.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"43 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78707438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The annuli consist of circular cavities with a central circular obstruction. In the absence of the central obstruction cylinders of low aspect-ratio exhibit tetratic order, except for the existence of four defects which restore the symmetry broken by the circular confinement. This behaviour is demanded by topology in systems with strong anchoring properties at the surface. By contrast, topology dictates that the annular geometry is compatible with a distorted tetratic phase without point defects. However, the effect of restricted geometry and limited size on phases possessing finite anchoring energy at the wall and elastic stiffness leads to different configurations, showing finite ordered regions separated by domain walls. We argue that highly packed nonequilibrium vibrated granular monolayers respond to geometrical frustration and extreme confinement as corresponding equilibrium systems of particles do, and that the former can be analysed in terms of surface free energies, elastic distortions and defects, much as equilibrium liquid crystals. Therefore, selective confinement of vertically-vibrated monolayers of rods could be used with advantage as a new tool to study the creation and dynamics of various types of defects in ordered systems.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"54 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77767532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Maier","doi":"10.18452/21036","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18452/21036","url":null,"abstract":"Thermophoresis is the process of particles moving along a temperature gradient in thermodynamic systems. Even though it has been studied for over 150 years, there is neither a complete theoretical description of thermophoresis in liquids nor of the Soret coefficient, the quantifiying measure of the Soret equilibrium. Recent studies connect its nature to equilibrium properties of the system, namely the excess enthalpy and the excess entropy, while there is still a debate over which of both describes the Soret coefficient more accurately and whether it can even be represented using those quantities. In this work I present a theoretical description for both cases based on density analysis by means of Brownian motion and dynamical density functional theory, where I assume local equilibrium. The interpretation of the Brownian stochastic differential equation (SDE) as an Ito or Stratonovich SDE is shown to have an influence on the outcome of the density. I argue that a Soret coefficient proportional to the excess enthalpy is connected to a system in a thermal gradient following its equation of state. Furthermore, I derive that the Boltzmann distribution law for external potentials does not hold for systems in thermal gradients but has to be replaced by a more general quantity. The theoretical predictions are consequently tested by means of BD simulations, where several systems are shown to follow their equation of state. The Soret coefficient of a solute in a toy model solvent is shown to be proportional to the solute's equilibrium solvation enthalpy. I further attempt to verify the theoretic derivations by means of MD simulations of noble gas solutes in SPC/E water. While the Soret equilibrium SPC/E water density follows its equation of state, neither Soret coefficient nor Soret equilibrium solute densitie entail a coherent agreement with any of the theoretical predictions.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"60 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80489608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phys., 2011, {textbf{109}}, 1101]. Fluctuation contribution is taken into account in a Brazovskii-type approximation. Explicit results are obtained for two model systems. In the two models, the diameters of the hard cores of particles are equal, and the interactions favour a periodic arrangement of alternating species A and B. However, the optimal distance between the species A and B is much different in the two models. Theoretical results for different temperature and volume fractions of the two components are compared with the results of Monte Carlo simulations, and the structure is illustrated by simulation snapshots. Despite different interaction potentials and different length scale of the local ordering, properties of the correlation functions in the two models are very similar.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81363442","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similarly, polymer gels containing a large amount of solvent have also been postulated that the shear modulus $G$, which is a kind of modulus of elasticity, is approximately equivalent to the entropy contribution $G_S$, but this has yet to be verified experimentally. In this study, we measure the temperature dependence of the shear modulus $G$ in a rubber-like (hyperelastic) polymer gel whose polymer volume fraction is at most 0.1. As a result, we find that the energy contribution $G_E=G-G_S$ can be a significant negative value, reaching up to double the shear modulus $G$ (i.e., $left|G_Eright| simeq 2G$), although the shear modulus of stable materials is generally bound to be positive. We further argue that the energy contribution $G_E$ is governed by a vanishing temperature that is a universal function of the normalized polymer concentration, and $G_E$ vanishes when the solvent is removed. Our findings highlight the essential difference between rubber elasticity and gel elasticity, which were previously thought to be the same, and push an established field of gel elasticity into a new direction.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"64 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88376942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The defects are located along a line and these defects are not in the thermal equilibrium with the monomers of the semi-flexible polymer chain; i. e. we consider the case of defected semi-flexible polymer chain in the present manuscript for the case of quenched defects. There are m defects on the conformations of the N monomers long semi-flexible polymer chain and we exactly count the number of Q realizations of the defected conformations of N-monomers long self-avoiding semi-flexible polymer chain; and thus we derive the exact expression of the free energy of the defected semi-flexible polymer chain for the finite length (i. e. using the fixed particle ensemble method); and we also derive exact expression of the partition function for the defected self-avoiding semi-flexible polymer chain in the thermodynamic limit using the grand canonical ensemble theory. Extended from the \"non-Hermitian skin effect\" in 1D systems, we demonstrate this effect in 2D lattices in which bulk elastic waves exponentially localize in both lattice directions. We clarify a proper definition of Berry phase in non-Hermitian systems, with which we characterize the lattice topology and show the emergence of topological modes on lattice boundaries. The eigenfrequencies of topological modes are complex due to the breaking of $mathcal{PT}$-symmetry and the excitations could exponentially grow in time in the damped regime. Besides the bulk modes, additional localized modes arise in the bulk band and they are easily affected by perturbations. These distinguishing features may manifest themselves in various active materials and biological systems.","PeriodicalId":8472,"journal":{"name":"arXiv: Soft Condensed Matter","volume":"8 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75476840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
