Anecdotal references to the prevalence of use of verbs in some languages (e.g. Russian and Mandarin) for expressing emotion words compared to English has not been supported by empirical evidence from a comprehensive study of the emotion words vocabulary, and, despite a proliferation of cross-linguistic studies of emotion words, a database of a corpus of emotion words across languages is absent. Emotion words in Mandarin Chinese were extracted, sorted into three semantic categories; emotion words, emotion-laden words and emotion-related words, and tagged for frequency of use, valency, intensity and parts of speech. Corpus data analysis method was then employed to study the patterns of the data. Consistent with other reports on Mandarin Chinese in other domains (e.g. acquisition), it was found that verbs occupied the biggest percentage in both emotion words and emotion-related words categories. An analysis of the valence and intensity of emotion words shows cross-linguistic divergence from what other studies have reported. The study also represents a significant attempt at providing a working template for the identification of emotion words in emotion research.","PeriodicalId":84010,"journal":{"name":"Word & world","volume":"46 1","pages":"73 - 92"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78811471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper looks at two examples from the late seventeenth century; they are both translations from the Philosophical Transactions to the Journal des Sçavans in 1675. They display a strategy of selective translation, combined in the second case with reorganization of the text. While thematic analysis reveals only minor differences, analysis of process types shows that there is a move towards physical factors at the expense of human involvement. It can be hypothesized that the reason for this derives from the different types of readership of the two periodicals. This phenomenon can be termed “protolocalization”.","PeriodicalId":84010,"journal":{"name":"Word & world","volume":"98 1","pages":"107 - 121"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"72686700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the vast majority of Muslims is neither literate nor Arab and cannot understand Arabic, the language of the Qur’ān’s revelation. Thus, we rely on dominant interpretations and translations of it in our own languages. Yet, Muslims also believe that the translated Qur’ān is not the “real” Qur’ān. What does it mean, then, for Muslims to encounter our sacred text in a foreign tongue? As a non-Arabic speaker, I grapple with this conundrum by giving examples from my own life, as well as my work on Qur’ānic hermeneutics. In the process, I touch on some of the themes in the conference’s description about language, identity, and translation.","PeriodicalId":84010,"journal":{"name":"Word & world","volume":"71 1","pages":"61 - 68"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73398687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This difficulty is compounded by the very limited amount of linguistic exposure EFL learners receive outside the classroom setting. This study seeks to determine the extent to which EFL learners’ receptive and productive knowledge of phrasal verbs correlate with factors that have previously been identified as facilitators of learning for these units. To this end, 100 EFL learners were asked to participate in a test that gauged their ability to recognize and produce phrasal verbs. The same participants also responded to a survey in which they stated the number of hours they spent on activities such as reading, watching movies/TV shows, listening to music and social networking along with the number of years they had studied English. A correlation analysis revealed that learners who spent more time reading and watching movies/TV shows had a better knowledge of phrasal verbs. Our results also imply that explicit instruction and focus on form are not as effective as repeated exposure in predicting learners’ phrasal verb knowledge.","PeriodicalId":84010,"journal":{"name":"Word & world","volume":"98 1","pages":"1 - 24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81172800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper attempts to provide evidence that content questions in this language differ in structure depending on the status of the questioned element as an argument or adjunct and that content questions involving an interrogative pronoun are bi-clausal, as they exhibit a cleft-like structure such that the fronted ‘wh’-word functions as the stative predicate of a copular clause that is generated sentence-initially encoding the focus of the construction. By contrast, content questions requiring an interrogative adverb are mono-clausal and exhibit ‘wh’-movement in the traditional sense, that is through ‘wh’-fronting. Thus, this paper intends to contribute to the long-standing discussion on whether Algonquian ‘wh’-questions have a mono-clausal structure, involving traditional ‘wh’-movement or a bi-clausal structure, exhibiting ‘wh’-clefting.","PeriodicalId":84010,"journal":{"name":"Word & world","volume":"20 1","pages":"25 - 60"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80780570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
