Taiwan underwent a unique migration in 1949-50, as more than a million people, mostly young men, arrived from Mainland China following the Communist civil war victory. The Mainlanders were distinct from the original settlers in several ways: they represented different provinces in China, were better educated, and had distinct occupational profiles. Since 1950, Taiwan has experienced a rapid demographic transition and notable economic development, resulting in mortality decline. In this paper, we generate age- and cause-specific death rates circa 1990 by education and nativity to evaluate the relative importance of each factor. We also use longitudinal survey data to help interpret the differentials in terms of selection, risk factors, and other dynamics of health and mortality.","PeriodicalId":83885,"journal":{"name":"Ren kou xue kan / Kuo Li Tai-Wan Ta Hsueh","volume":"13 1","pages":"1-58"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86852540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It appears that the 2 traditions of research will probably never meet one another unless efforts are made to bring them together. This paper interpets the gravity model of migration in light of the Todaro model and relates to the studies of migration differentials. While the decision to move is a function of the relative opportunities in both the origin and destination, the function is also contingent on the characteristics of the individuals making the decision to move. A logit analysis of the probability of being employed in the urban-modern sector which is conditional on both age and schooling is presented. Results indicate that the structure of the employment opportunities is the principal determinant of the probability while level of schooling as an individual characteristic plays an important role in becoming employed in the urban-modern sector.
