A review of the literature suggests that the milieu of group therapy can provide curative factors. Seven women who were diagnosed with primary vaginismus and/or vaginismus secondary to dyspareunia, and who all had a history of unsuccessful treatments, were invited to participate in a 20-week group therapy experience. For 15 sessions the women met and participated in the therapeutic group process. They disclosed repressed feelings regarding their bodies, perceptions of sex, and the effects on their relationships with their partners. In subsequent sessions, they were taught relaxation, breathing techniques, and desensitization methods. Partners of the women were invited to join the group at the 15th session. Post therapy measures and the group satisfaction survey conducted at the end of the sessions indicated positive changes for the couples. The women reported a significant reduction in pain and sexual anxiety. The men became more understanding and patient with their partners, creating an increase in overall couple satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"26 1","pages":"59 - 67"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2001.11074383","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, it is likely that they will express some of this behavior publicly within a school setting. When these behaviors occur at school, it is incumbent upon educators to be able to accurately determine whether their students' sexual behaviors are normative or problematic, along with how they should be addressed. This study describes the observations and reactions of 29 kindergarten, 1st-, and 2nd-grade teachers towards the sexual behaviors of their students over a 6-month period. Of the 378 sexual behaviors that were observed, 162 were determined to be within the normative range of children's sexual behavior. A total of 184 behaviors were identified as problematic or potentially problematic, requiring varying levels of adult intervention, including therapeutic follow-up. Sexual behaviors of a communicative nature were the most frequently observed behaviors, followed by students touching other students' genitals, buttocks, or breasts. There were 14 behaviors where students either forced other students to expose or touch their private parts, or used sexually explicit threats towards them. The teachers discussed only 26 of the sexual behaviors with a colleague, and only 9 of the incidents were reported to the school principal; none was reported to the state's child protective hotline.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"25 1","pages":"277 - 285"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2000.11074361","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sex education in Israel is reviewed historically as an inseparable relationship between professional knowledge and power, here crystallized in the institutionalization of sex education courses in the classroom and in sex education textbooks. However, the real issues concerning adolescent sexuality (active sexual relations, birth control, and pregnancy) have been avoided during the 30 years of sex education in Israel. Rather than providing accurate information to teenagers, sex education programs and textbooks have tended to reinforce new myths by ignoring adolescents' real needs and the existence of other models of sexuality. Instead, these information sources tend to reinforce the image of the ideal Western middle-class family, gender stereotypes, and patriarchal relationships.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"25 1","pages":"286 - 293"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2000.11074362","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Outcome research has provided little evidence of differential effectiveness among the various treatment methods; however, significant research findings have shown that treatment is superior to both placebo and no-treatment control groups. The overall effectiveness of various treatment approaches may have more to do with what they have in common than on their differences. Four factors have been identified as the principal elements accounting for improvement in all forms of psychotherapy. These factors are extratherapeutic, relationship, expectancy or placebo, and models and techniques. Applying a common factors perspective to sex therapy, rather than focusing on developing new therapies or techniques specific to sex therapy, may be more important in enhancing treatment outcome.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"42 1","pages":"221 - 230"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2000.11074354","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59227987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As of July 1998, the Internet consisted of nearly 37 million connected computers, and it is growing at a rate of 40% to 50% annually. Although commercial sites now dominate the information superhighway, some potholes mar the openness of the Internet's information exchange. The authors found a veritable explosion of gigabytes of pornographic material on the Internet when using several search engines or portals (Netscape, Internet Explorer, and so on). Some of these activities, especially those depicting the sexual exploitation of children, are both unsavory and illegal. Globally, governments, policing agencies, and commercial organizations have attempted with growing success to limit access to child pornography. To cope with the growing technological sophistication of childporn purveyors, greater interagency and international cooperation will be needed.","PeriodicalId":83768,"journal":{"name":"Journal of sex education and therapy","volume":"25 1","pages":"245 - 251"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1080/01614576.2000.11074357","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"59228074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
