Gameiro","doi":"10.5380/avs.v27i2.82795","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5380/avs.v27i2.82795","url":null,"abstract":"Sheep farming has shown organizational and development initiatives since the beginning of the 21st century in the State of Paraná. This study identified and characterized the meat sheep production system profile in five mesoregions of the State of Paraná. The study sample was defined and selected by using the rapid appraisal methodology, which was applied in five mesoregions of Paraná State. These mesoregions together account for 65.22% of the sheep population of the State. Data were collected by means of a semi-structured questionnaire applied during visits to these farms with the support of technicians from the Federation of Agriculture of the State of Paraná (FAEP) as well as local technical assistants, addressing the following aspects: (i) farm, farm owner and labor profile, (ii) flock characteristics, (iii) production and feeding systems, (iv) facilities, (v) reproductive and sanitary management, (vi) challenges and future prospects. The results obtained revealed the occurrence of a production system heterogeneity and difficulties in defining standards for the activity development. A total of 180 and 720 prenatal and postnatal samples were used respectively, their skulls were macerated and mandibles detached. In prenatal life, the mental and mandibular foramina were rudimentary in the late 1st trimester and 2nd trimester and developed in the 3rd trimester. The alveolus and mandibular canal differentiated in the 3rd trimesters respectively. In the postnatal life, the ventral border was convexed in Uda but flat in Balami and Yankasa breeds. The angular part of the ramus was thin in Uda and thick in Balami and Yankasa. The mandibular tuberosity was absent in Balami and Yankasa but present in Uda. There was a small accessory foramen caudal to the mental foramen just below the first premolar teeth in the Uda and Yankasa. The labial surface was wide and rough in Balami and Uda but smooth in Yankasa. The medial surface was flat in the young postnatal and convexed in the adult postnatal. Alexandre","doi":"10.5380/avs.v1i1.77164","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5380/avs.v1i1.77164","url":null,"abstract":"Considering the importance of the flock of Alentejo sheep, the goal of this study was to determine the average values of eye examinations, evaluate the ophthalmoscopic features and fluorescein staining for Merino sheep from Alentejo region, in Portugal. The 48 eyes of 24 healthy, female sheep belonging to the sheep flock at the University of Évora were evaluated. The average values obtained for Schirmer tear test (STT) were 19.0 ± 5.22 mm/min, with a reduction of tear production varying according to the age of the animal, for tear pH were 7.7 ± 0.48 and for intraocular pressure (IOP) was 12.7 ± 3.03 mmHg. Fundus aspects were observed in the tapetal area with shades of blue, green and yellow. The optic disc was predominantly in the transition area between tapetal and non-tapetal regions of elliptical shape, with holoangiotic vascular pattern. None of the animals showed fluorescein staining on the ocular surface. Thus, the objective of this work was to determine the efficacy of including flavorings (cinnamon and banana) in the diet of recently weaned piglets on their weight gain, feed intake and feed/gain ratio. For this, 20 weaned and castrated 28-day-old male piglets weighing between 6.5 - 8 kg were randomly divided into five groups: Control treatment: unflavored food; Treatment 1: food with banana flavor; Treatment 2: food with canela flavor: Treatment 3: food with banana for 10 days - canela 10 days and banana 10 days; and Treatment 4: : food with canela for 10 days - banana 10 days and canela 10 days. The flavorings were added at 1 g/kg of the diet. The feeding period lasted 30 days for each treatment. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the statistical analysis, and differences were accepted with p <0.05. At the end of the study, it was determined that the weight gain, feed intake and feed/gain ratio were similar between the treatments (P> 0.05). Colônias suspeitas foram identificadas em ágar tríplice açúcar ferro para caracterização bioquímica e analisadas a partir de PCR Multiplex, seguido de investigação de susceptibilidade aos agentes antimicrobianos disponíveis usando o sistema VITEK® 2 Compact (bioMérieux)®. Das 15 propriedades estudadas, foram verificadas E. coli enterohemorrágica (EHEC) em seis, sendo isoladas em 11% (22/200) dos animais pesquisados. O teste de susceptibilidade aos antimicrobianos demonstrou que 50% dos casos apresentaram resistência a pelo menos um antimicrobiano: 31,81% para ácido nalidíxico, 27,27% para trimetoprim-sulfametoxazol, 18,18% para ampicilina e 13,63% para cefalotina. This study aimed to investigate possible fluctuations that occur on laboratory tests of healthy dogs following overnight and over−day fasting. For this purpose, 20 adult clinically healthy dogs were enrolled in the study. Venous blood samples were obtained 7:00 am (ONF, overnight fasting) and at 7:00 pm (ODF, over−day fasting) at the same day, following a 12−hour period of respectively overnight and over−day fasting for hematological, biochemical and oxidative stress assessment. The erythrogram showed significant reduction of red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) measured by the cell counter following ODF. The only change seen on the leukogram was a lower lymphocyte count following ODF. No significant changes were found on platelet count, although ODF was associated with decreased mean platelet volume (MPV) and total plasma protein (TPP). ODF caused a significant reduction of total cholesterol, ALP, phosphate and triglycerides. On oxidative stress parameters, ODF reduced total oxidant capacity (TOC) and increased lipid peroxidation.
